In many societies, there is a growing emphasis on individualism, with people

prioritizing their personal goals and desires over collective interests.

Why is this so?

Is this a positive or negative development?

An increase in individualism is observed in a great deal of communities present day and humans give
more priority to their own target and desires than community benefits. I am personally inclined to
think that this is a positive approach; and I will discuss what lies at the root of my point of view in the
following essay.

First of all, present-day individualism seems to be on the rise in numerous countries. The underlying
reason for this is capitalism in the present day, that is, living conditions push people to act in ways
that they do not want. Capitalist improvements increase individual greediness and selfishness to
name but a few. As a result, that circumstance leads people to corrupt and desolate. Over the course
of time, agricultural life turned into city life, namely consumer society and that situation promotes
inappropriate behaviour in the modern communities.

However, individualism brings some upsides, for instance in the field of science because scientists
generally prefer working alone and that is why they research more deeply. Another example is
commercial successes, that is, individual achievements lie at the root of giant success stories such as
Facebook, You tube and Twitter to name but a few.

To conclude, personal gains and selfishness take precedence over communal benefits in today’s
society by virtue of capitalism and the transition from rural to urban life. To my way of thinking
individualism gives rise to positive outcomes in scientific studies and businesses (start-ups).
