and the remarkable education that shaped his vision
for the Philippines.
19TH CENTURY
PHILIPPINES
Spanish Colonial
Rule
The Philippines was a Spanish colony for
over 300 years, governed by Spanish
officials and the Catholic Church. The
socio-political system was hierarchical, with
Spaniards and mestizos at the top, followed
by the principalia (native elites), and the
indios (ordinary Filipinos) at the bottom.
Gen. Rafael de Izquierdo (1871-
1873)
A boastful and ruthless
governor general who ordered
the execution of Father
Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos,
and Jacinto Zamora.
General Camilo de Polavieja (1896 –
1897)
An able militarist but heartless
governor general, was widely
detested by the Filipino people for
executing Dr. Jose Rizal.
Friar Dominance
Spanish friars played a dual role
in governance and spiritual
leadership, consolidating power
through religious conversion.
They often held significant
political influence, especially in
rural areas.
Education Impact
The Spaniards established schools
and universities, like the University
of Santo Tomas (1611), primarily for
the elite.
