PART I.

A. Introduction

Good day students! From the previous lesson, we learned that Contemporary Art is the art of the
present, which is continuously in process and in flux (Datuin, 2016). It is the art of today, produced by artists
who are living in the twenty-first century. It encompasses a wide range of art forms. This module will let
you distinguish contemporary art forms from the different regions of the country. Filipino artists are adept in
creating artworks not only from different traditional and non-traditional materials, but also in integrating
different elements and forms. The art throughout the regions is distinguished as a vast array of forms and
styles, seeking inspiration from cultural or social issues, local customs or traditions, indigenous cultures, and
established fine art forms. At the end of this lesson, you are expected to research to know more about the
various contemporary art forms.

B. Discussions

Philippine Contemporary Arts

Philippine contemporary arts can be described into visual arts, literary arts and performing arts.
Visual art is an expression of artistic ideas through images, structures, and tactile work. Painting, sculpture,
architecture, and film are examples of visual arts. Apart from visual arts, there are Philippine contemporary
art forms that can be described as literary arts. Literary arts are an expression of ideas through writing.
Literary arts can be categorized as poetry, prose, and drama. In the Philippines, literary arts are greatly
encountered in literature. Furthermore, there are also Philippine contemporary art forms that can be
described as performance arts. A person doing certain actions and movements in front of an audience that go
along with sound in a space and time exemplifies Performing Art. Performing arts include music dance and
theater (Ganzon, 2017).
Knowing these classifications will guide you in identifying and exploring different contemporary art
forms from the regions of our country.

Various Contemporary Art Forms

According to Sandagan and Sayseng (2016), the following are the seven major contemporary art
forms:
1. Visual Art is an umbrella term for a comprehensive classification of art which consists of several artistic
disciplines. But commonly, these are primarily visual in nature such as picture (painting, drawing, and
printmaking) and sculpture. A picture is two-dimensional image produced by using different media such as
ink, oil paint, charcoal and watercolor. Sculpture, on the other hand, is three-dimensional that may be shaped
by means of a stone, wood, and marble. Some of the contemporary art techniques are collage, digital arts,
graffiti, print making, and mixed media.
2. Dance is an instance of moving the human body to the beat of a music choreographed in definite

time, form and space.
3. Music is an art that appeals to sense of hearing. It is composed of ordered tones or sounds in succession
4. Architecture is an art form of planning and erecting structures especially habitable ones.
5. Theater is an art form of presentation. Scripts are represented on stage by actors and are boosted by
props, lights and sounds.
6. Literature is a written work having form or expression of thoughts of permanence or universal interest.
7. Film/Cinema is a technological transformation of a theater. Scripts are portrayed but are pre-taped and
edited before its showing.
