Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements of the degree Program
Bachelor of Arts (IHM)
I met my group for the first time on 20 April. The group was formed by four
students: Andra, Martin, Albert cand me.
I had already known Andra in previous groups on modules 1 and 2, but with Albert
and Martijn, it was the first time we worked together. We immediately made a
group contract and an action plan to manage teamwork as more efficiently as
possible.
We divide the roles, Andra was the leader and content creator, Martijn was the
Grammar checker and Team manager, Albert was the secretary and Document
checker, and I was the Feedback and Deadline keeper.
In the second week, we had our first deadline that was the video pitch. It went
pretty well. We divided the task, and one day before the deadline, practice it to be
sure that everyone will be prepared. My part was about the interest and need of the
industry partner. It was a bit challenging, but overall, I did a good job. The pitch
went well, and all the feedbacks were positive.
In the fourth week, we had the research design deadline. We divide tasks; mine was
about the mission and vision of the hotel. Whit brainstorming, we create four sub-
question to understand the problem better. It finally went pretty well; all the
feedback was positive.
We also had to host the atelier session during week 5; it went pretty well. Prepare it
almost become spontaneous and easy to do.
In the sixth week, we had to submit our poster presentation. First of all, we divide
the sub-questions. I took the one about: “how is the current turn-down service
fitting the mission and vision of Notiz hotel?” to answer this question, an interview
whit the PI was helpful. To finish the advisory and get ready for the presentation,
each of us chooses a part. Mine was about the research type and sub-questions. The
presentation went very well. The feedbacks were cheerful and helpful for the final
product. After the feedback, all of us had a clearer idea about the solution.
For the advisory report, we divide all the tasks very well. My job was about finance
and operation management, sub-question, and type of research. I also went to the
front office to interview the PI to understand if our second improvement proposal
can work. We will see for the grade and feedback.
As teamwork, we were well structured. Even if the group was a bit too stressed for
me, we always did a good job. All the tasks were well divided, and everyone was
choosing each task. We never had negative feedback. The mix of 4 of us made
excellent teamwork. Whit Andra is the third module that we are working on
together. She improves a lot; she enhance the management of stress well, and she
is more self-confident. Her leadership was outstanding, and she always manages it
well.
Albert is an honest worker; he always did his task very well and help each of us. I
think he probably is one of our group's most efficient and hard workers.
Martin is a form of inspiration for me. He is kind of chill, that is my style, but he
always does his task well. His self-confides is admirable. During the presentation he
is the best, he knows how to sell and convince people. I do not have any bad
feedback for my groupmates. If I have to tell the truth, this model was my favorite
one.
Marià has been an excellent facilitator. I like her way of direct the atelier session.
She was always cheerful and ready to give us the right motivation. In this module,
the atelier session was more productive than the previous one. One part was
because we understand better how to work during that session and in the other
part. After all, we had a lot of time to work in the sub Group.
Unfortunately, in this module, I enrolled in the practice shift only after 24 June.
For this reason, I have not yet been able to practice housekeeping at the Notinz
hotel. As a positive point, in this module, I took more seriously the housekeeping
eLearning. Every time I was doing the course, I was more focused, and I put all my
effort into it. The hardest part was whit the design challenge, where the turn-down
service was the core topic. If I did practice before, I didn’t need a lot of time to
understand what turn-down service really is. Overall I think it went well; I
understand mostly all the aspects of the housekeeping department. I’m waiting to
do my first shift to see if I figured out this department. I can’t say much about the
facilitator and manager because I never meet them. But I had the pleasure to
interview Patricia Wewer, a housekeeping PI. Patricia was kind, and her interview
helps me a lot whit the Design challenge.
As a personal reflection, I tried to achieve and improve all my personal goals in this
module. Considering the first module, my presentation skills improve a lot. in the
first two modules, I was almost reading the text that I prepared before. Now I
always try to make a time frame with some keywords and improvise my pitch
instead of writing a text. I try it under time in front of the mirror tree the day before
the presentation. I think, in the end, this method is paying off. The feedback has
improved. The only things I need to improve are my Business English and trying to
appear more enthusiastic and convincing. For improving my way of speaking, I start
reading. I have never been a reader, but this brings me some weakness in my
speaking and reading skills. I want to fix it, so since February, I have started reading.
I have read four books here, two in English. Getting started was hard and to be
honest, I can’t read every day. Due to my dyslexia, reading makes me very tired, and
I can’t read fast. Overall, it works. I see improvement in myself in some way also in a
personal culture way.
One other goal that I set this year is about my writing skills connected with
presentation skills. Unfortunately, also writing is one of my weaknesses. Also, here I
tried to improve myself whit the reading. Writing the accountability is the most
challenging thing that I found this year. I try to find my guidelines for writ it: during
the design challenge, I try to mark all the different steps, feedbacks, and personal
thoughts in a sheet. When the deadline comes closer, I start to write everything by
consulting the sheet and the past reports. After putting all the text in
[Link] for grammar checking, I see some improvement in each module. I
keep having to enhance, but considering the first accountability, I feel more
comfortable writing it.
The goal about the organization and set a personal working routine is kind of done.
Looking at the working routine, I find out that work in the university makes me way
more productive than working in my room. Doo to this, I decided to come every day
to university. I have a different location for working, and sleeping increases work
productivity. I read that in “free! love your work, love your life” written by Chris
Barèz-Brown, this perfectly works for me. Regarding my organization. From one
part, it improved thanks to my working routine, but it wasn’t enough. I start to make
weekly reminders, some tasks that I had to finish within the week. I still have to
improve in the organization, but I am satisfied whit my improvements considering
September.
Looking at my mission statement this year, I develop a mindset that changes my
perspective regarding the hospitality sector. It happens in each module, but just in
this one, I realize it. I was doubtful about the educational method because I could
not see improvement in my professional skill. But now I know that I improve my
hospitality and business knowledge base in my academic skill-building. Through this
base, I start looking at my projects whit a more professional point of view. The exam
preparation gives me the base of different subjects, such as marketing, law,
finance... The design challenges allow me to apply and try what I learn about the
subject, like operational management, marketing, or finance. It also helps me
improve my teamwork skills, such as trying to give more ideas as possible. During
practice, I can understand how a department works and how it built my personal
operational structure for my project.
To conclude, this module was my favorite. I was finally able to find the right
motivation to move forward. I was doubtful about continuing these studies. Now I
am sure that this is the right path.
