I. PROBLEM SOLVING

1. Refer to the figure shown. The thermal conductivities of various materials used, in
W/m · °C, are kA = kF =2, kB = 8, kC =20, kD = 15, and kE = 35. The left and right surfaces
of the wall are maintained at uniform temperatures of 300°C and 100°C, respectively.
Assuming heat transfer through the wall to be one-dimensional, determine (a) the rate of heat
transfer through the wall; (b) the temperature at the point where the sections B, D, and E
meet; and (c) the temperature drop across the section F. Disregard any contact resistances at
the interfaces.

2. Calculate the thickness of the magnesia insulation necessary to restrict the heat loss to
5 BTU/hr-ft2 through the walls of a furnace having inside and ambient temperatures of 1500
o
F and 150 oF, respectively. The furnace wall is ¼ in, steel plate and 3 in refractory lining.
Thermal conductivity in BTU/hr –ft-oF are kref = 0.6, ksteel = 26, kmag=0.03.

3. A cast iron pipe (k = 80 W/m - oC) whose inner and outer diameters are 5 cm and 5.5
cm respectively is coverd with a 3 cm thick glass wool insulation (k = 0.05 W/m - oC) The
temperature at the inner surface of the pipe is 320 oC and the interface temperature between
the pipe and insulation is 300 oC. Determine the surface temperature of the insulation.

4. A wall 2 cm thick is to be constructed from material that has an average thermal

conductivity of 1.3 W/m-oC. The wall is to be insulated with material having an average
thermal conductivity of 0.35W/m-oC, so that the heat loss per square meter will not exceed
1830W. Assuming that the inner and outer surface temperatures of the insulated wall are
1300 and 30 oC, calculate the thickness of insulation required.

5. A hollow sphere is constructed of aluminum with an inner diameter of 5 cm and an

outer diameter of 8 cm. The inside temperature is 100◦C and the outer temperature is 50◦C.
Calculate the heat transfer.

6. Suppose the sphere in Problem 5 is covered with a 1-cm layer of an insulating

material having k = 50 m W/m · ◦C and the outside of the insulation has a temperature of 35
o
C. The inside of the sphere changes at 110◦C. Calculate the heat transfer under these
conditions.

7. A hot steam pipe having an inside surface temperature of 250◦C has an inside
diameter of 8 cm and a thickness of 5.5 mm. It is covered with a 9-cm layer of insulation
having k = 0.5 W/m · ◦C, followed by a 4-cm layer of insulation having k = 0.25 W/m · ◦C.
The outside temperature of the insulation is 20◦C. Calculate the heat lost per meter of length.
Assume k = 47 W/m · ◦C for the pipe.
