Heat Transfer Assignment-I Date: 10/5/22
1. Classify the modes of heat transfer and explain them with related governing
equations.
2. Explain all types of boundary conditions.
3. Derive the expression for 3D heat conduction equation with Cartesian coordinates.
Write the special forms of 3D heat conduction equations.
4. Derive the expression for critical thickness of insulating pipe.
5. Derive the expression for critical thickness of insulating sphere.
6. Find the heat transfer coefficient through the composite wall shown in the fig per unit
area Assume one dimensional heat flow. Ka=150 W/m K, Kb=30 W/m K, Kc=65
W/m-K, Ab=Ac=0.5m2, Aa=Ad=1m2. Area of ‘b’ and ‘c’ occupies 50% area of ‘a’
and‘d’. Inside and outside surface temperatures are 400oC and 30oC respectively.
7. A furnace wall is made up of three layers, one of fire brick, one of insulating brick
and one of red brick. The inner and outer surfaces are at 8700C and 400C respectively.
The respective co-efficients of thermal conductivities of the layers are 1.0, 0.12 and
0.75 W/m-K and the thicknesses are 22cm, 7.5 cm and 1cm. Assuming close bonding
of the layer at their interfaces, find the rate of heat transfer per sq. Meter per hour and
the interface temperature.
8. A steam pipe (k=45 W/m0C) having 70 mm inside diameter and 85 mm outside
diameter is lagged with two insulation layers; the layer in contact with the pipe is 35
mm asbestos (k=0.15 W/m0C) and it is covered with 35 mm thick magnesia insulation
(k=0.075 W/m0C). The heat transfer coefficients for the inside and outside surfaces
are 220 W/m2 0C and 6.5 W/m2 0C respectively. If the temperature of the steam is
3500C and the ambient is 300C calculate:
(i) The steady loss of hat for 50m length of the pipe;
(ii) The overall heat transfer coefficients based on inside and outside of the
lagged steam main.
9. Determine the rate of heat flow through the spherical boiler wall which is 2m in
diameter and 2cm thick steel (k=58W/mK). The outer surface of the boiler wall is
covered with asbestos (k=0.116 W/mK) 5mm thick. The temperature of the outer
surface and that of the fluid inside are 500C and 3000C respectively. Take ineer film
resistance as 0.0023K/W.
10. A 3-mm-diameter and 5-m-long electric wire is tightly wrapped with a 2-mmthick
plastic cover whose thermal conductivity is k=0.15 W/m°C. Electrical measurements
indicate that a current of 10 A passes through the wire and there is a voltage drop of 8
V along the wire. If the insulated wire is exposed to a medium at T=30°C with a heat
transfer coefficient of h=12 W/m2°C, determine the temperature at the interface of the
wire and the plastic cover in steady operation. Also determine whether doubling the
thickness of the plastic cover will increase or decrease this interface temperature.
