AND GENDER
DISCRIMINATION
IN MODERN DAY MEDIA

AS A GROUP, WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL VIEWS
REGARDING THE GENDER STEREOTYPE THAT WAS
CONVEYED THROUGH YOUR CHOSEN MATERIAL?

Cleaning advertisements and job hiring advertisements have always been

promoting gender stereotypes and discrimination where only women are
always featured in cleaning ads, while men are the only ones who appear
in hiring ads, just as our material presented. These stereotypes can limit
people’s perception of what role suits them or should be
expected from them as per gender. This causes individuals to
underestimate their own abilities and hinders people from
attaining their full potential because society says so. It has been
existing from previous generations and it affects the perception
of children towards equality in designating household roles.
HOW DOES THIS GENDER STEREOTYPE AFFECT
PEOPLE’S PERCEPTIONS OF GENDER?
Gender stereotypes make everything predetermined and limit individuals
from doing what they really want to do.
It stops people from being different, in the way they portray themselves and
how they interpret things.
This gender stereotype limits us from being what we want, it creates the idea
that it is what we should follow since it is part of our tradition which in fact, is
not.
These gender stereotypes affect how people set expectations for a
specific gender, especially regarding their roles, characteristics, and
personalities.
This can be the root of different issues and result in inequality between the
opportunities that are available for both women and men.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO AVOID OR STOP
GENDER DISCRIMINATION OR STEREOTYPING?
Focus on educating people to erase old-fashioned ideas about men and women. It is important to
raise awareness and education about it and explain the challenges that different genders face
that arise from such. By doing so we can break these old gender norms and can work towards
promoting gender equality.
Letting anyone do a specific task/work without considering one's gender can stop gender
stereotypes. The practice must start within individual's home.
The media also plays an important role in affecting the perception of gender of people so those
who have control over it should help in spreading awareness towards it and eliminating it in
different materials like advertisements, posters, and movies.
There could also be certain laws or policies that could exist at national levels that ensure that the
rights of men and women are protected so that discrimination towards them would not be
tolerated, especially if it is gender-related.
Some stereotypes are internalized in people during their childhood so parents should pay
attention to how they let their perceptions affect their children and not limit their roles and
personalities just because of their gender.
