DANCE
is a particular series of graceful
movements of the body and feet.
When we dance, we move our body
and feet in a way which follows a
rhythm, usually in time to music. It
is a way of moving that uses the
body as an instrument of expression
and communication. Dance enables
us to understand ourselves and the
world in which we live. It also
enhances our skills of perception,
observation, and concentration.
Type of Dances:
I. FOLK DANCE
are the indigenous dances of any specific “folk” or the
common people. They are traditionally customary or recreational dance forms
of a given country which have evolved naturally and were handed down across
generations. They are related to everything of importance in our daily lives,
such as customs, rituals, and occupations of a specific group of people.

Characteristics:
❖ It is traditional
❖ It has an expressive behavior
❖ Simple, basic rhythm dominates the folk dance and establishes the pattern of
movement.
❖ It is created by an unknown choreographer or by communal efforts.
❖ It performs a function in the life of the folk people.
What are the differences between
national, and ethnic dance?
National dances—are traditional folk dances but have a national
scope. They are popular and widely danced throughout a given
country, often with a number of regional variations. (e.g.Cariňosa,
Curacha, Pandanggo)

Ethnic Dances—or Ethnological dances are those performed in

primitive tribes and have retained their close kinship with religious
ritual and community custom. These dances may “require a certain
level of special performing skills” that are symbolic in meaning,
making it harder for those outside the group to understand.
Types of Ethnic Dances:
1. Ritual dances—dances that depict ritual ceremonies. Ex. Dugso
(Bukidnon) and Pagdidiwata (Palawan).

2. Life-Cycle dances—dances relating to the cycle of human life such as

birthing, courtship, wedding, and funeral. Ex. Binasuan (Pangasinan) and
Daling-daling (Courtship dance from Sulu)

3. Occupational Dances—dances society. at exhibit work and occupation of

the dancers. Ex. Mag Asik (Cotabato) and Mananagat (Cebu) dances.

Francisca Reyes-Aquino—the first National Artist for Dance and the

Mother of Philippine Folk Dance.
II. Ballet
was taken from the Italian word Ballare, meaning to dance, and ballo, referring to
dances performed in a ballroom. According to Haskell (1965)—is a combination of the arts of
dancing, poetry, music and painting. The essential quality of the ballet dancer is grace
that is phrasing, fluidity, harmony, the making of words into a poetic whole; bound up with
the reaction to music that goes far deeper than a purely rhythmic reaction.

Ballet is an artistic, programmatic, scenic dance accompanied by music

(Burian 1963). It is basically a special and generically unique from, which resulted
from the synthesis, collaboration and equilibrium of several different types of art. The art
of gesture and mime interprets, by specific means of expression, the thematic and
emotional content of the scenario on which it is based, bringing the poet’s ideas to life,
presenting the story with all its conflicts, plots, and solutions.

The first ballet performs were men. The ballet costumes before were Grecian;
sandals, diaphanous skirt, low-necked body, hair in form of wreath.
Classical vs. Contemporary Ballet
1. Classical Ballet—is known for its exactness of technique that highlights pointed
toes and turnouts, high extensions and gracefulness. It also uses traditional
mime that utilizes gestures for conversation instead of words. “These gestures
are as precise as ballet steps and have to be learned and performed accurately.”

2. Contemporary or Modern Ballet—mainly uses ballet steps and more

natural movement to convey meaning. It incorporates elements of both classical
ballet and modern dance that allows a greater range of movement that does
not support the strict bodylines that are traditional in any of the classical ballet.

Philippines Dance Company (now ballet Philippines And Dance Theater
Philippines.
III. Modern Dance
a term to describe contemporary dance, is a style of dancing where dancers are free to
express their feelings through movements without adhering to any rules in dance particularly
in that of ballet. It is actually a rebellion against the confining nature of classical ballet.
1. Unlike ballet, dancers of modern dance use their own interpretations instead
of structured steps. They thrust aside the classical ballet stance of an upright, erect body,
and instead often opt for deliberate falls to the floor. The movements are not always
necessarily light, beautiful, and effortless but instead strong and sometimes ugly as the
effort involved in producing it is revealed. Modern dance uses more of the torso on a
horizontal rather than a vertical plane.
2. Beauty and ethereal qualities of the human situation is what is mostly being
emphasized in ballet, while modern dance portrays the actual human situation as it is.
Modern dance makes use of the floor as part of the movements, whereas in ballet,
the floor was merely for standing or sitting purposes. It also includes several areas
of dance movement, namely, technique, improvisation, and choreography.
IV. Cheer Dance
Cheerleading is an event that consists of cheers
and organized routines for sports team motivation,
audience entertainment, or competition. The routines
contain many components of cheers, jumps, dance,
gymnastics, and stunting. The purpose is to encourage
the spectators of events to cheer for sports teams at
games. The yellers, dancers, and athletes involved in
cheerleading are called cheerleaders. When they are
grouped together as one, they are called a squad.
V. Dance Sport
Is a combination of art and sport. It was called competitive
ballroom dancing in the past. This goes with partners (male and
lady) competing against other partners dancing on the floor at one
time. Dance sport provides an avenue to gain discipline of the body
and mind of the dance athletes.

1. Latin Dances: Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive

2. Standard Dances: Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and
Quickstep, which constitute the dance style.

Fun Fact about Ballroom
1. IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS!
Dancing can improve your relationship. Discovering new steps
together teaches couples to interact with each other. They’re looking
into each other’s eyes, anticipating the next move. It also opens up
energy channels of feeling and connection.
2. STRESS RELEASE!
Researches have proven that dancing also reduces stress and tension
for the mind and body. Ballroom dancing can be a great way to have
fun and reduce stress at the same time.
3. HEALTH BENEFITS!
Studies by the national heart, lung, and blood institute have shown
that ballroom dancing also prevents heart disease in particular.
What is Ballroom Dance?
"Ballroom dance" refers to
traditional partnered dance
forms that are done by a couple,
often in the embrace of closed
dance position ("ballroom dance
position"). These include waltz,
swing, tango, salsa and blues.
History of Ballroom Dance
The origins of ballroom dance first appeared in 16th century
Europe—French philosopher, Michel de Montaigne, wrote of
a dance that he observed in 1580 in Augsburg, Germany,
where dancers moved together so closely that their faces
touched. Waltz, considered the oldest traditional ballroom
dance, originated as a dance style enjoyed by lower classes.
Around 1750, a couples’ dance called “Walzer,” was
popularized by peasants of Bavaria, Tyrol, and Styria. Danced
in ¾ time, it eventually spread from the countryside, to the
suburbs, and finally into European cities.
The Different
Types of Ballroom
Dance
Cha-Cha
A continual, flirtatious game of “cat
and mouse” - the International Cha
Cha has Cuban roots and is known for
its breaking action on count “2”
(unique to Cha Cha, Rumba, and
Mambo) and syncopated action on
counts 4&1 (also counted as “cha cha
cha”). Differentiating itself from the
American Cha Cha, the International
style is danced with a straight leg
action throughout.
Samba
The Samba is a ballroom dance is
inspired by the Brazilian carnival
dances. While Brazilian Samba is
traditionally danced alone, the
International Latin Samba derives
rhythmic actions and high energy
from its Brazilian ancestry. Samba is
notably a “bouncy” dance, known for
intricate combinations of timings and
beat values.
Rumba
The International Rumba is the slowest
International Latin dance in terms of music,
however, it showcases alternating timings to depict
fast moments within a slow dance. Known as the
dance of love, the Rumba is crowd favorite, often
telling a romantic story between two people.
Unlike the American Rumba, the International style
is danced with a straight leg action, likened to the
International Cha Cha.
Paso Doble
The Paso Doble originated in France, and
many named figures within this dance are
in French, such as “apel,” meaning “call
to action" (this is a weight replacement
that involves articulation of the entire
foot with the ground, typically creating a
stomping sound).
Jive
International Latin concludes
with the joyful and energetic
Jive. The Jive is a dance built
from multiple styles of Swing:
East Coast, West Coast, Lindy
Hop, Jitterbug, and more.
Characterized by quick feet
and fun tricks, the Jive often
has a crowd on their feet
cheering.
INTERNATIONAL
BALLROOM
Waltz
The classic, elegant, International
Waltz is the quintessential,
“ballroom dance” (think,
Cinderella!) Known for its
characteristic “123,” the Waltz is
danced in a closed hold
(partners do not break their
frame and remain connected)
from start to finish. This is a
unique element to all
International Ballroom dances.
Tango
The fiery and passionate Tango
features staccato actions and
powerful leg movements. Dancers
do not have “body rise” within this
dance, so it appears flatter and
more linear across the dance floor.
These features, along with a varied
dance position and footwork,
present interesting technical
differences between the Tango and
other International Ballroom
dances.
Viennese Waltz
Originating in Vienna, Austria, the
Viennese Waltz is significantly faster-
paced than the Waltz (often referred to
as the “Slow Waltz” for this reason). The
Viennese Waltz is only comprised of
seven figures, therefore dancers spend a
lot of time focusing on the creation of
the same full, voluminous movements
that seem to race around the dance floor.
Foxtrot
The jazzy foxtrot takes on a
smoother appearance within the
International Ballroom style, ebbing
and flowing like waves across the
shore. Intricate rise and falls are
created by decisive footwork that
anecdotally awarded Foxtrot the
title of the most difficult Ballroom
dance.
Quickstep
The quickstep is a light-
hearted dance of the
standard ballroom dances.
The movement of the dance is
fast and powerfully flowing and
sprinkled with syncopations.
The upbeat melodies that
quickstep is danced to make it
suitable for both formal and
informal events.
AMERICAN
RHYTHM
Swing
The American, otherwise known
as “East Coast” Swing, originated
in the North American East Coast
in the early 20th century. While it
is more grounded, slower, and
less “bouncy” than the Jive, it has
a fun and invigorating energy,
making it a definite crowd
pleaser!
Bolero
Bolero dance is a slow, sensuous
rhythm dance coming from the
Spanish tradition. The lead in the
dance literally mimics the
movements of the toreador in a
bullfight, while the follow
alternates between movements
suggesting the bull or the
matador's cape.
Mambo
Mambo is a fast and spicy dance
characterized by strong Cuban motion,
staccato movement and expression of
rhythm through the body. The dancer
holds on counts 1 and break on count 2.
Mambo also features press lines, many
swivels and spins
VI. Street Dance (Hip-Hop Dance)
is one of the newest dance genres in
the 20th century that immensely
attracts the new generation particularly
the youth. It came from the African-
American hip hop culture and
tremendously spread worldwide. It is a
freestyle in nature and maybe
practiced in either a dance studio or in
an open space outdoor. Other terms
that are used are crews, freestyling,
and battles. It can be entertainment or
a hobby.
HIP-HOP DANCE
is a vibrant form of dance that
combines a variety of freestyle
movements to create a cultural
piece of art. Through its three
main styles of popping, locking,
and breaking. hip-hop dance has
evolved into one of the most
popular and influential styles of
dance.
4 Characteristics of Hip Hop Dance
Hip hop dance is a recognizable style with a few defining characteristics, which
include:

1. High energy: Hip hop music provides a heavy beat for quick-paced movements
requiring high endurance and stamina.
2. Complex footwork: Hip hop dance puts emphasis on the footwork, pulling off
special moves that often look effortless. Choreographers will often push the
boundaries of their routines, finding new and innovative ways to create pictures
with their body.
3. Versatility: Hip hop dance can be performed at a venue with friends or alone in
a studio. It contains a diverse range of movements that can be fitting for any
age or level of experience.
4. Attitude: Hip hop dance reflects the attitude of the music that is being danced
to, which is often full of confidence, boldness, and irreverence.
5 Hip Hop Dance Styles
Hip hop dance contains a variety of elements borrowed from other dance genres. As such, there
are different styles of hip hop dance that exist:
1. Freestyle: Freestyle hip hop dancers improvise their movements in the moment, using their skills
and techniques to create a flow of dance that requires little to no choreography. Experienced
freestylers already have an idea of certain movements that work well together, which can make
it easier to spontaneously create fluid movements.
2. Krumping: This African American form of dance is driven by pure emotion and force. Krumping is
defined by energetic and powerful movements like chest bumping, often expressing strong
feelings in a lyrical way.
3. Popping: This dance style is marked by a quick contraction of muscles to create a jerking effect
in the dancer’s body. Nearly every part of the body can be popped, which can create a surreal
and robotic effect.
4. Locking: In this style of hip hop dance, the dancer quickly and frequently moves their body and
freezes it in place. It is similar to popping but holding positions longer than with popping.
5. Breakdancing: Breakdancing is very closely associated with hip hop, though it’s often seen as
its own distinct style of dance. This acrobatic style popularized by B-boys and B-girls is marked
by complicated floor-work, often involving spinning and contorting.
VII. Festival Dance
are cultural dances performed to the strong
beats of percussion instruments by a
community of people sharing the same culture
usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or in
thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest. Festival
dances may be religious or secular in nature.
