DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

IBC 201 WORKSHOP TECHNOLOGY FOR ENGINEERS TEST 2 MARKS: 50

NAME: ______________________________ W/SHOP SLOT DAY_______________ TIME_____________

1. Define the following terms

a) Tempering (2)
Heat treatment process that improves the toughness of hard, brittle steels so that they can hold up during
processing.
Is a heat treatment process in which the components are heated and held to a set temperature below the
critical point for a certain duration. The components are then cooled to room temperature in still air.

b) Fixings (2)
Hardware materials which are used to hold two or more materials together

c)Fittings (2)
Hardware materials used to finish cabinet work.

2. Explain the procedure for carrying out the following heat treatment processes

a) Annealing an aluminium sheet (3)

apply soap lathe to the sheet
Heat sheet on a heath
When the lathe turns black remove from the fire

b) Hardening mild steel bar (3)

Heat on the heath
Soak for some time
Quench in water

c) Case hardening mild steel bar (3)

Heat on a heath
Put in carbon powder
Reheat again and let cool

3. In the table below fill in the most appropriate adhesive for the stated materials (4)

1
Material Material Adhesive
Wood Wood PVA glue
Acrylic Acrylic Tensol cement, acrylic cement
Wood stone Contact glue, epoxy resin
PVC PVC PVC solvent

4. In table 1 below fill in the description of properties of materials (8)

Property Description
Hardness Ability of material to resist surface indentation or scratching

Toughness Ability of material to absorb energy without breaking

Malleability Ability of material to be bent or hammered into shape without breaking

Ductility Ability of material to be drawn into wires without breaking

5. You have been tasked in converting a star screw driver into a flat screw driver. Outline the processes
you will take to achieve this. (4)
Normalise the steel tip
Anneal it
Hammer tip to make it flat
Case harden or harden the tip

6. With the aid of a sketch, convince funders that you fully understand the procedure for executing the
below processes.
a) Rotational moulding (4)

2
b) Vacuum forming (4)
the process of heating a thermoplastic sheet to its softening point, stretching it over or into a single-sided
mold, and holding it in place while it cools and solidifies into the desired shape. The thermoplastic sheet is
clamped into a holding device and heated by an oven using either convection or radiant heat until it is
softened.

c) Green sand casting (4)

The sand casting process involves the use of a furnace, metal, pattern, and sand mold. The metal is melted
in the furnace and then ladled and poured into the cavity of the sand mold, which is formed by the pattern.
The sand mold separates along a parting line and the solidified casting can be removed.

7. Compare and contast between the following;

a) MIG vs TIC welding (4)

Similarities Differences
Both use shield gas MIG use electrode spool of wire, TIG electrode is fed by hand
Both work on metal TIG electrode is non consumable

b) Rotational moulding vs centrifugal casting (4)

Similarities Differences
Both use rotational force One is for metal the other is for plastic
Both require a mould for Centrifugal moulding spins on one axis, whislt rotational moulding revolves
shape on three axis.
