MODULE 5
UNIT 2 – RECREATION IN THE PHILIPPINES:
Recreational Games
Overview:
Physical Education in schools involves the study of theory regarding health and
fitness. Physical participation in a range of sports is also conducted as part of a physical
education curriculum. Team sports played and taught include basketball, volleyball, football
and soccer. Individual sports commonly taught are tennis and a range of track and field
activities. Fun recreational games can be a way to vary your physical education curriculum
and teach motor skills.
Objectives:
Demonstrate basic skills associated with team recreation games and tactics.
Demonstrate the ability to perform several offensive and defensive strategies.
Utilize and apply the knowledge of recreation games’ rules, terminology, and
scoring procedures.
PRE-TEST!
Answers the following questions:
__________1. A fun recreational game that involves working a number of different motor
skills and muscle groups?
__________2. A good addition to a physical education curriculum that develops both fitness
and mental aspects of learning is allowing students to invent their own recreational game.
__________3. A recreational game that involves the motor skills of handling and throwing a
ball.
__________4. Games that are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are
considered to be "fun".
__________5. Is essential for all the games we play and is necessary for our games to be
successful and injury free.
Dodge Ball
Dodge ball is a recreational game that involves the motor skills of handling and
throwing a ball. Dodge ball also requires quick movement to avoid balls and can develop
good balance and footwork. The rules of dodge ball involve a volleyball style court with no
net but a center line that neither team can cross. One ball is involved and players are
eliminated when hit with a ball thrown by an opposition player. If a ball is caught, a player
can bring an eliminated teammate back into the game. Because this game involves balls
being thrown at players, it is important to use soft balls that will not cause pain and monitor
safety closely during play.
Creativity
A good addition to a physical education curriculum that develops both fitness and
mental aspects of learning is allowing students to invent their own recreational game. Allot
equipment and set the playing surface. For example, give the group a ball, six cones, six
pinnies and a basketball court and then allow them the freedom to create rules and
regulations. This activity also develops leadership skills as the game is created and taught to
others.
Spatial Awareness (the ability to see two or more objects in relation to each other and to
oneself in a given space.) is essential for all the games we play and is necessary for our
games to be successful and injury free!!

a. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings including the people and objects
around you so that you do not collide into anyone or anything! – Watch out where
you are going!! Control your body!
b. Make sure your shoes are tied and they will not fly off in the middle of a game and hit
and hurt another student. A consequence will be earned if it does occur.
c. Pay attention to the game so you can see if someone or something is coming towards
you and might hit you. Protect you face and body.
2. Each day you are being graded for you effort and participation. Make sure you are
being physically active and moving around instead of just standing, talking, or watching
others play the game.
3. Cheating wrecks the game. If students are caught cheating, they will be pulled from
the game and given an “Alternative P.E. Experience”.
Crab Soccer:
*Two large inflatable balls are used and placed in the center of the gym
*Four teams border the playing field sitting on their designated line between the
cones
*Players are numbered off (#’s 1-6)
*When the player’s number is called, they must crab to the center and use their feet
or head (not recommended) to get the ball over the heads of the “goalies”.
*The “goalies” are the remaining players sitting on their bottoms on their designated
line.
*The “goalies” can use their hands and feet to keep the ball from going over their
heads but must remain on their line (no standing up or kneeing). Getting off your
bottom may result in a penalty point.
*” Goalies” can score a goal
*Once a yellow ball scores, it stays out until the other ball also scores or the time runs
out for that round
*The team with the LOWEST score wins
4-Wall Soccer:
*A score is when the ball makes contact with the wall, yellow line and below or top
bleacher and below, behind the goalies.
*Forwards and Mid-fielders can score multiple times against multiple walls during
the timed round
*The remaining players, not in the center, are the “goalies”
*The “goalies” can use their hands, feet or bodies to stop the ball from touching the
wall.
*” Goalies” must remain at least one arms-length from their wall. If they step out
further than that, their team will receive a penalty point
*If a” Goalie” gets a ball, they must put it on the ground and kick it or roll it to a
teammate. They are not allowed to PUNT (Kick it right out of their hands) the ball.
Punting the ball will result in a penalty point.
*” Goalies” cannot score a goal
*The team with the LOWEST score is the winner.
*Played with Two teams; one up kicking and one out playing the field
*A teacher is the pitcher using a soft dodge ball.
*Bases are larger and are created by using four cones for each of the three bases
*When the kicking team is up to bat there is one line to the side for the girls and one
line to the other side for the boys. The batting order must remain the same
each time the team comes back up to kick. Those who have recently kicked go to the
back of the line and those who have not kicked yet, towards the front.
*One boy and one girl will go up to the kicking line (in between two cones) at the
same time. One will kick and one will be waiting by the cone to run after the ball has
been kicked.
*The actual player to kick the ball will alternate from boy to girl, switching off each
time a new set of players is up to bat.
*After the ball is kicked in front of the kicking line, both players will run to the first
base. They both can be safe; one runner can be out and the other runner can be safe
or they both can be thrown out (if the ball reaches the first base player before they
both get there). If this happens only one out is received.
*If both runners are safe, they do not have to stick together. They can run the bases
anyway they choose.
*First base is the only base, after the ball is kicked, that there is a force out (you can
touch just the base if you are holding the ball before the runner gets there and the
runner would be out)
*On each base you can have up to 5 runners. If there are more than 5, a runner (or
more) must leave before the ball comes to the base and someone gets tagged out.
*Runners can run the bases as many times as they can make it around before they are
tagged or pegged out. As they are approaching home base, they can run right
through the two cones, score and be done OR the runner can decide to just touch the
kicking line at home base, score once, and continue to first base to try to go all the
way around and score again.
*Runners need to watch the kicker to see if the ball is kicked on the ground or in the
air. If the ball is kicked in the air, a runner might need to TAG-UP (go back to their

original base before running to the new base), stay on the base until it is caught, or
take a small lead off and run back to the base if the ball is caught.
*Players in the field can get a runner out by throwing it to first base before the
runners get there or throw the ball directly at the runners and hit them before getting
on a base.
*Players in the field CAN NOT RUN WITH THE BALL!!!! If this happens, the
runners are automatically safe.
*Players in the field cannot run into the 3-point arc until the kicker touches the ball, if
this happens, the runners are automatically safe.
*Players in the field cannot block the base running path or get in the way of the
runners.
*Each team gets 5 outs before their up-to-bat is over.
*Throwers in the middle cannot throw a ball at the “NO THROW ZONE” which is
indicated by colorful poly spots on the ground. Throwing in that direction will
result in a consequence.
*Throwers may leave the coned off area to retrieve a ball and bring it back inside the
coned off area before they can throw it.
*The winning team is the one with the MOST bean bags in their score basket after
their allotted time to run.
Power Ball:
*When a player has the flag, they are not to hide the flag or pass the flag to another
teammate.
*The flag needs to be set back on the cone after the flag is recovered from the tagged
runner and at the end of each round
*The round is over when a player successfully gets the opponents’ flag back over to
their side without getting tagged, which scores a point for their team.
*The team with the HIGHEST score wins.
*We usually play this game outdoors inside the track but we have also played this
game inside the gym on a smaller scale with the boys and girls playing in alternating
rounds
*There are four teams (usually each class/teacher is a team-some hour a class needs
to be divided and split between the four other teachers)
*The playing field is boarded and divided into four sections or quadrants with
orange cones
*Each quadrant has a hoop filled with 15 football in the back corner and a safety zone
with poly-spots around the hoop
*Each payer needs to tuck in their shirts, wear a flag (red or yellow) tucked in about
two inches on the side of their shorts (down the side seem), and a colored pinnie
*At the start of the round, some players, on offense, run into the quadrants of the
OTHER THREE TEAMS to get a football and try to make it back to their own section
and put the football in their own hoop without getting their flag pulled.
*Other players can remain in their quadrant and play defense by pulling the flags of
those who are taking the footballs out of their hoop.
*Only if an opponent has a football in their hand and is in your class team's quadrant
can you try and pull their flag.
*Players with a football CAN NOT hide, cover, or block their flag from being pulled;
instead, they must use fancy footwork and agile movements to get away.
*Players with a football CAN NOT toss or throw the football at any time during the
game. Football must be placed back in the hoops.
*Players with a football need to stay inbounds (boarder of orange cones). Stepping
out of bounds is like getting your flag pulled.
*If you are successful in pulling an opponent's flag, an exchange must happen. You
give their flag back and they give the football back for you to put back in your hoop
*If you are the one who's flag was pulled, then they give your flag back and you give
the football back and return to your quadrant to reset and continue to play.
*You can stay in the safety zone for up to 10 seconds before you have to leave with or
without a football.
*At the end of the round, the team with the most footballs in their safe zone is the
winner.
*The team with the HIGHEST SCORE wins.
