I. PHYSICAL EDUCATION RECREATIONAL GAMES

Physical Education in schools involves the study of theory regarding health and
fitness. Physical participation in a range of sports is also conducted as part of a physical
education curriculum. Team sports played and taught include basketball, volleyball, football
and soccer. Individual sports commonly taught are tennis and a range of track and field
activities. Fun recreational games can be a way to vary your physical education curriculum
and teach motor skills.

 Dodge Ball
Dodge ball is a recreational game that involves the motor skills of handling and
throwing a ball. Dodge ball also requires quick movement to avoid balls and can develop
good balance and footwork. The rules of dodge ball involve a volleyball style court with no
net but a center line that neither team can cross. One ball is involved and players are
eliminated when hit with a ball thrown by an opposition player. If a ball is caught, a player
can bring an eliminated teammate back into the game. Because this game involves balls
being thrown at players, it is important to use soft balls that will not cause pain and monitor
safety closely during play.

 Obstacle Course Race

Obstacle course races are a fun recreational game that involve working a number of
different motor skills and muscle groups. A typical course would involve sprinting between
stations where tasks must be completed before moving on to the next station. Fun group
competition can come from racing in relay teams. Activities that work coordination involve
jump rope or agility footwork tests. Add stations for bounding activities, such as 10 jumps
on and off a bench, and body weight exercises, such as push-ups, sit-ups and squat jumps.
An obstacle course race pairs the competition for racing with circuit-type exercises and
serves as a good fitness workout combined with a recreational game.

 Creativity
A good addition to a physical education curriculum that develops both fitness and
mental aspects of learning is allowing students to invent their own recreational game. Allot
equipment and set the playing surface. For example, give the group a ball, six cones, six
pinnies and a basketball court and then allow them the freedom to create rules and
regulations. This activity also develops leadership skills as the game is created and taught to
others.

II. RECREATIONAL GAMES STUDY GUIDE

Recreational Games – Games that are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure
and are considered to be "fun".

General Rules for all Recreational Games:

Spatial Awareness (the ability to see two or more objects in relation to each other and to
oneself in a given space.) is essential for all the games we play and is necessary for our
games to be successful and injury free!!
CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

1.Safety is our number one concern!!

a. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings including the people and objects
around you so that you do not collide into anyone or anything! – Watch out where
you are going!! Control your body!
b. Make sure your shoes are tied and they will not fly off in the middle of a game and hit
and hurt another student. A consequence will be earned if it does occur.
c. Pay attention to the game so you can see if someone or something is coming towards
you and might hit you. Protect you face and body.

2. Each day you are being graded for you effort and participation. Make sure you are
being physically active and moving around instead of just standing, talking, or watching
others play the game.

3. Cheating wrecks the game. If students are caught cheating, they will be pulled from
the game and given an “Alternative P.E. Experience”.

III. INDOOR GAMES

 Crab Soccer:

 *Two large inflatable balls are used and placed in the center of the gym
 *Four teams border the playing field sitting on their designated line between the
cones
 *Players are numbered off (#’s 1-6)
 *When the player’s number is called, they must crab to the center and use their feet
or head (not recommended) to get the ball over the heads of the “goalies”.
 *The “goalies” are the remaining players sitting on their bottoms on their designated
line.
 *The “goalies” can use their hands and feet to keep the ball from going over their
heads but must remain on their line (no standing up or kneeing). Getting off your
bottom may result in a penalty point.
 *” Goalies” can score a goal
 *Once a yellow ball scores, it stays out until the other ball also scores or the time runs
out for that round
 *The team with the LOWEST score wins

 4-Wall Soccer:

 *Four Teams line up against the four gym walls

 *4-5 soft dodge balls are placed in the center of the gym
 *Players are numbered off (#’s 1-6)
 *When a player’s number is called, they go into the center, acting as a forward or
mid-fielder, and try to “score” on the other three teams (not their own)
CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

 *A score is when the ball makes contact with the wall, yellow line and below or top
bleacher and below, behind the goalies.
 *Forwards and Mid-fielders can score multiple times against multiple walls during
the timed round
 *The remaining players, not in the center, are the “goalies”
 *The “goalies” can use their hands, feet or bodies to stop the ball from touching the
wall.
 *” Goalies” must remain at least one arms-length from their wall. If they step out
further than that, their team will receive a penalty point
 *If a” Goalie” gets a ball, they must put it on the ground and kick it or roll it to a
teammate. They are not allowed to PUNT (Kick it right out of their hands) the ball.
Punting the ball will result in a penalty point.
 *” Goalies” cannot score a goal
 *The team with the LOWEST score is the winner.

 Mat Ball: Combination of kickball and dodge ball

 *Played with Two teams; one up kicking and one out playing the field
 *A teacher is the pitcher using a soft dodge ball.
 *Bases are larger and are created by using four cones for each of the three bases
 *When the kicking team is up to bat there is one line to the side for the girls and one
line to the other side for the boys. The batting order must remain the same
 each time the team comes back up to kick. Those who have recently kicked go to the
back of the line and those who have not kicked yet, towards the front.
 *One boy and one girl will go up to the kicking line (in between two cones) at the
same time. One will kick and one will be waiting by the cone to run after the ball has
been kicked.
 *The actual player to kick the ball will alternate from boy to girl, switching off each
time a new set of players is up to bat.
 *After the ball is kicked in front of the kicking line, both players will run to the first
base. They both can be safe; one runner can be out and the other runner can be safe
or they both can be thrown out (if the ball reaches the first base player before they
both get there). If this happens only one out is received.
 *If both runners are safe, they do not have to stick together. They can run the bases
anyway they choose.
 *First base is the only base, after the ball is kicked, that there is a force out (you can
touch just the base if you are holding the ball before the runner gets there and the
runner would be out)
 *On each base you can have up to 5 runners. If there are more than 5, a runner (or
more) must leave before the ball comes to the base and someone gets tagged out.
 *Runners can run the bases as many times as they can make it around before they are
tagged or pegged out. As they are approaching home base, they can run right
through the two cones, score and be done OR the runner can decide to just touch the
kicking line at home base, score once, and continue to first base to try to go all the
way around and score again.
 *Runners need to watch the kicker to see if the ball is kicked on the ground or in the
air. If the ball is kicked in the air, a runner might need to TAG-UP (go back to their
CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

original base before running to the new base), stay on the base until it is caught, or
take a small lead off and run back to the base if the ball is caught.
 *Players in the field can get a runner out by throwing it to first base before the
runners get there or throw the ball directly at the runners and hit them before getting
on a base.
 *Players in the field CAN NOT RUN WITH THE BALL!!!! If this happens, the
runners are automatically safe.
 *Players in the field cannot run into the 3-point arc until the kicker touches the ball, if
this happens, the runners are automatically safe.
 *Players in the field cannot block the base running path or get in the way of the
runners.
 *Each team gets 5 outs before their up-to-bat is over.

 Beanbag Dodge Ball:

 *This game is played with four teams

 *One team is waiting out; two teams are throwing in the middle and one team is
running in each round. There is a set timed rotation that is followed until all teams
had a
 chance to run and score.
 *This game uses small bean bags/items, dodge balls, small mats and large high jump
mats for the runners to hide behind.
 *The Running team will have a small object like a bean bag in their hand when they
start the game. They will have a small head start to begin running on the first
whistle.
 *Their objective is to get all the way around the gym without getting touched by a
dodge ball.
 *The running team can stop behind a mat for protection before running again.
 *If the runners make it all the way around without getting touched by a ball, they
will deposit the bean bag into the score basket, take another new bean bag and try to
go around again.
 *If the runner makes contact with a ball in any way shape or form (if a ball touches
them anywhere head to toe), that runner is out and needs to reset by walking in front
of the mats in the opposite direction of the runners all the way to the beginning to
start again.
 *If a runner gets beamed in the head with a line drive, they are not considered out. If
the runner tries to duck a ball and gets hit in the head, then they are out.
 *On the second whistle, the two classes in the middle of the gym can pick up a dodge
ball and start throwing at the runners. If they pick up a ball to early, the runners will
be rewarded with extra time to run without being thrown at.
 *The throwers must remain inside the coned off area when they throwing. If they
step over the coned line, it is up to them to confess to a teacher and receive a small
consequence and return back to the game. If they do not confess and a teacher
catches them, they will be removed from the game and not return. Same rule applies
if a thrower hits a runner in the head.
CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

 *Throwers in the middle cannot throw a ball at the “NO THROW ZONE” which is
indicated by colorful poly spots on the ground. Throwing in that direction will
result in a consequence.
 *Throwers may leave the coned off area to retrieve a ball and bring it back inside the
coned off area before they can throw it.
 *The winning team is the one with the MOST bean bags in their score basket after
their allotted time to run.

 Power Ball:

 *This game has two teams

 *The perimeter of the court is lined with cones and the court is divided in half
 *We use four large inflatable balls that start in the center of the coned off court.
 *There are three sizes and point values assigned to the ball. The smaller beach ball is
worth 1 point, the medium black/gold ball is worth 2 points and the two
 large blue ones are each worth three points.
 *We use three types of dodge balls; some soft and squishy, some firm, and some old
school rubber balls. The rubber balls are considered the POWER BALLS that when
thrown hard and accurately can substantially move the inflatable balls in one
direction. The balls will be divided equally between the two teams at the start of the
game.
 *One team will be on one half of the gym in front of the stage and lined up behind
the cones. The other team will be on the half of the gym in front of the bleachers and
lined up behind the cones.
 *The team on the stage side is trying to use their dodge balls to hit and move the
large inflatable balls across the gym to score over the goal line on the bleacher side of
the gym. The team on the bleachers side is also using their dodge balls to hit and
move the large inflatable balls across the gym to score over the goal line on the stage
side of the gym.
 *Some players need to play offense and use the dodge balls to push the large
inflatable balls to score on the opposite side. Some players need to play defense to
stop the balls from crossing the line and scoring.
 *After the dodge balls have been thrown, they may be sitting and rolling around the
middle of the court. Anyone can run into the middle to retrieve ONE ball and bring
it back behind the cones to throw. They may get hit with a dodge ball but they are
not out if they do.
 *Throwers need to be behind the cones when throwing. If they are caught stepping
over the coned line, points will be rewarded to the other team.
 *If a large inflatable ball touches a player anywhere that has run into the middle to
get a ball, that player is out of the game for the rest of the round.
 *The round will be timed and the balls and players can reset after each round. *The
team with the HIGHEST SCORE WINS!!

IV. OUTDOOR GAMES

CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

 Blob Tag: This game is similar to Sharks and Minnows

 *There are two lines of cones inside the track

 *The players start behind the closer line of cones
 *A couple “blobs” are positioned between the two line of cones. A “blob” is two or
three students linked together by holding hands, wrists or linked at the elbow.
 *A whistle is blown and the players must run across the field to the opposite cone
line without being touched/tagged by a “blob”. A whistle will blow each time the
players need to run to the other side
 *If you are tagged by a “blob”, you must join that “blob”
 *If a “blob” tags you after it has broken apart, the tag does not count and the runner
is free. The “blob” must be connected and stay linked in order for the tag to count
 *If you run onto the track, which is out of bounds, to avoid being tagged, you are out
and need to join the closest “blob”
 *When a “blob” is four people connected, it needs to break apart and make two pairs
 *When there are only a few runners left, the round will end and the “blobs” return to
be the runners and the winning runners become the new “blobs”

 Capture the Flag:

 *This game is played with two teams; pinnies and non-pinnies

 *Each team has a "flag" sitting on top of a cone surrounded by a circle of poly-spots
called a safety zone.
 *Only one person can be in the safety zone at a time (the person with the flag in their
hand) and can stay in the safety zone for no more than 10 seconds before they must
leave the circle with the flag or leave the flag on the cone and exit the safety zone.
 *Each team has a "prison" which is a large coned off boxed area on their side to hold
the other team's members if caught on the wrong side.
 *The playing field is bordered and contained inside the track. Stepping onto the
track would be out-of-bounds and that player would need to go to "jail".
 *Each team starts the game facing each other on their side of the mid-line.
 *When the whistle is blown, players can enter the other team's side and try to
"capture" the opponent’s flag and get it back to their original side without getting
tagged.
 *If a player is tagged on the opponent's side, they must go to that side's "jail" and
wait to be rescued by a team member.
 *If a teammate can get to the "jail" without getting tagged, they can rescue and leave
with two teammates and walk connected safely back to their side
 *Some team members should play offense and actively try to get the flag on the
opponent's side and bring it back.
 *Some team members should stay on their side and play defense by tagging the
opponents on their side trying to get the flag and sending them to "jail"
 *There is no "puppy guarding" (guarding too closely) the safety zone and the "jail".
Players need to be at least 5-10 giant steps away from each of these areas.
 *There is no hiding in or running through the jail
CARAMOAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Cadong, Caramoan, Camarines Sur

 *When a player has the flag, they are not to hide the flag or pass the flag to another
teammate.
 *The flag needs to be set back on the cone after the flag is recovered from the tagged
runner and at the end of each round
 *The round is over when a player successfully gets the opponents’ flag back over to
their side without getting tagged, which scores a point for their team.
 *The team with the HIGHEST score wins.

 Four Corner Football

 *We usually play this game outdoors inside the track but we have also played this
game inside the gym on a smaller scale with the boys and girls playing in alternating
rounds
 *There are four teams (usually each class/teacher is a team-some hour a class needs
to be divided and split between the four other teachers)
 *The playing field is boarded and divided into four sections or quadrants with
orange cones
 *Each quadrant has a hoop filled with 15 football in the back corner and a safety zone
with poly-spots around the hoop
 *Each payer needs to tuck in their shirts, wear a flag (red or yellow) tucked in about
two inches on the side of their shorts (down the side seem), and a colored pinnie
 *At the start of the round, some players, on offense, run into the quadrants of the
OTHER THREE TEAMS to get a football and try to make it back to their own section
and put the football in their own hoop without getting their flag pulled.
 *Other players can remain in their quadrant and play defense by pulling the flags of
those who are taking the footballs out of their hoop.
 *Only if an opponent has a football in their hand and is in your class team's quadrant
can you try and pull their flag.
 *Players with a football CAN NOT hide, cover, or block their flag from being pulled;
instead, they must use fancy footwork and agile movements to get away.
 *Players with a football CAN NOT toss or throw the football at any time during the
game. Football must be placed back in the hoops.
 *Players with a football need to stay inbounds (boarder of orange cones). Stepping
out of bounds is like getting your flag pulled.
 *If you are successful in pulling an opponent's flag, an exchange must happen. You
give their flag back and they give the football back for you to put back in your hoop
 *If you are the one who's flag was pulled, then they give your flag back and you give
the football back and return to your quadrant to reset and continue to play.
 *You can stay in the safety zone for up to 10 seconds before you have to leave with or
without a football.
 *At the end of the round, the team with the most footballs in their safe zone is the
winner.
 *The team with the HIGHEST SCORE wins.
