1.2 The challenges Thembi is facing at the early adulthood life stage is that she had to move
from Kzn to Gauteng when she accepted the offer leaving her family behind this meant that
she had to learn to be independent and responsible as she is all alone in Gauteng. She has to
navigate through her new career without her family. Thembi feels confused and is anxious
about her job role, she is finding it difficult to fit in and contributing to society because she
doesn’t know what she is really doing. Thembi has doubt about her career because she met
with the career counselor according to the case study she is uncertain about her future
career path in the company which means she has not made any impact in her current
environment with her new job role. Thembi is far from developing stable affiliation as she
finds her transion to a new province away from family very challenging. Thembi is finding
it difficult to be established in her occupation, she’s feeling anxious from the pressure her
family is putting on her to find direction in her career. Thembi has not established her
identity because she only accepted the offer out of fear of being unemployed. Thembi should
have researched on her new career path, understood what it entails and how it can improve
her career in future but instead she just wanted to do something and avoid being an
unemployed graduate. Thembi needs to establish her identity, undestand what an hr officer
does and how she can be impactful in her new environment with her career. She also needs
to be employable and have a strong standing career and to achieve that she needs to find her
way around understanding her new role as an hr officer. I think 6 months is enough for
someone to get used to her new role, the first two months can be hard and challenging but
from there she should have got it under control. 6 months is a lot for someone in a new role
to transion, she needed to ask colleagues and managers for assistance the first month she felt
confused about her role.
1.3 My name is Nthabisen Tshenye and I am 31 years of age. I first got a job as a training
administrator in 2014 when I was just 22 years of age. I moved from Rustenburg to Pretoria,
staying away from all my family and friends. The first few days it was hard to transion
because I was used to the family setting of mom, dad and siblings. They supported me in
everything I did but when I moved I had to learn to be independent, cook and clean f8r
myself. Buying my own groceries, waking up on time for work. This taught me responsible
and taking accountability for my actions. At the office I cemented my position, I had training
for a month but completed or in two weeks. I knew why I left home and why I was in that
office, to work, establish my self in my new career path. I found a place I could I fit in and
contributed to society, I was also helping with recruitment and I ensured I spread the word to
the local community whenever we had vacancies. Most of the people I helped I still working
in that organization today. When I put in the hard work I created a name for myself and I
flourished in my role . I had experience that would enable me to be employable in the future
and I had developed stable affiliations. I feel like I am on middle adulthood life stage.
Currently fighting to sustain employment, transioniong from being single to married having
to work your career around family. Ensuring that my mental and physical well being is taken
care of. When I started I had a qualification from Boston College and I wanted an honors
degree to grow in my career I tried to apply with that qualification to Unisa but it was not
accredited so I had to Start from scratch. I studied higher certification marketing the Bcom hr
and this year is my final year. I needed to do this because one can stay in the same position if
they do not develop themselves. I needed to give myself this growth and motivate myself that
one day I will be an HR Director. All employees need development, companies do give some
training but it’s not something you can use at other organizations to find employment so one
needs to develop their career with or without the company. Always study further, I am
already looking forward to doing my honors degree next year. This will help me grow in my
career and help sustain my employment. Career development and growth helps one to avoid
career stagnation which can kill one’s motivation to work and strive hard to maintain their
work ethics.
