In the chapter Nietzsche said : “He who has
a ‘why’ can bear almost any ‘how’ ” which
means, as long as the one knows what he or
she lives for, surely can face any problem in
his or her life.
Well before I start my speech today, I would
like to share a video that I think it’s a
necessary for you to watch.
A very good day to all my fellow friends, my
name is XXX and I’m from BNK 1.
I’m here today to give a speech with the
topic “Why is learning more important than
grades?”
But first I would like to ask you guys one
question : “Did you really know what you have
learn about after several years studying in
primary school? Secondary school? Or
wherever you’re studying right now? ”
Benjamin Franklin, an American polymath
and also one of the Founding Fathers of the
United States, once said, “Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I
learn”.
This shows how important learning is in our
life.
It can’t be deny that all of us learn since
we’re born.
We learn how to breath, how to walk, and
even till now, we’re still learning how to
communicate with the people around us.
According to the statistic, number of
candidates with all A’s increase by years.
However, most of them lost their goals once
they graduate as they don’t really understand
neither what they’re interest in nor knowing
any useful life skills.
Alright, so I would like to tell you about the
disadvantages of grading system and the
benefits of learning without focusing on grades
as well.
Without wasting any time, I’ll start by talking
about the disadvantages of grading system
that all of us have met before.
Firstly, the reason why I’m saying that
the grading system doesn’t benefits us as
it may decrease our self-confidence.
Why is that so?
Try to ask yourself, can a letter represent
the time of learning you have spend on?
In my opinion, I think the mainly factor is the
fear of failure, which is also known as
Atychiphobia, is a phobia that afraid of
disappointing people and even the
rejection/lack of approval of others.
It can encourage us to avoid ourselves
from taking risks, setting goals, or
participating in activities just because we
can’t achieve a well grade in our
examinations.
Thus, we might feel worthless, defeated
and frustrated as we’re comparing ourselves
with the others.
Due to the fear, we always feel hesitate
when we realize we’re having an different idea
among the others and obviously we wouldn’t
be able to think outside of the boxes.
Who do you know that you can compare
yourself to?
That’s quite easy actually, you, yesterday.
And you can define the “better” yourself.
It doesn’t have to be some imposition of
external morality because you are the one who
know what your weakness is and where you
could improve, right?
Anyway, let’s go back to our point shall we?
There’s different types of grading system
which are very common to us such as letter
grading from A to F scales, percentages
grading and also Grade Point Average which
is also known as GPA have been used to
measure our performance for our courses,
right?
For your information, according to tradition,
the first grades issued at Yale were given out
in the year 1785.
Beside that, the effect of psychological
stress is also one of the disadvantages of
grading system.
You may wondering how does it risked our
health.
Try to imagine, what does it feels like if a
student always tense him or herself just to
maintain a excellent result in the examination?
What if someday the student doesn’t get the
grade as he or she expected?
How does the student thinks when he or she
never get a good grade before?
Researchers found that there are at least
couple of deaths reported of suicide
committed by students because they failed
or they couldn't score perfectly.
Teens with the lowest final average grades
were three times more likely to commit suicide
than students who graduated with the best or,
at least, very high grades.
Some of them may not committed suicide
but instead blame on themselves not having
good grade by self-harming.
In addition, grading system also might
create an environment that restricts one’s
innovation and creativity.
I’ve saw a quote before from an English
writer named Sir Antony Rupert Jay, who
said “The uncreative mind can spot wrong
answers, but it takes a creative mind to spot
a wrong question.”
And it shows how priceless creativity is and
we shouldn’t let the grading system ruined it.
So as all of you know, we need to stand
out from the comfort zone to do somethings
we haven’t done yet and failure is often
needed as a feedback loop to learn from
mistakes and become competent.
In contrast, there are a lot of benefits to
learn without grades.
At first, we can increase our self-
discipline.
Incredible right?
Don’t you agree that we can improve our
time management by spending more time on
the research as long it’s our favourite theme?
Besides, we can also gain more knowledge
during the discovering such as surfing the
internet, reading the newspaper and journal or
even asking someone who was experienced.
“People learn more on their own rather than
being force fed.” said by Socrates.
Without doubt, the quote have surely shows
that self-learning is more necessary than
grades as grade is just only a measurements
of varying levels of achievement in a course.
Apart from that, we might also get more
interested to note down the details after the
researching without being asked.
You should learn it, not memorizing it.
Understand well during the learning process
is more important, just like what Elbert Einstein
said : “If you can't explain it to a six year old,
you don't understand it yourself.”
Don’t you agree that?
Moreover, here are some other reasons for
you to learn, not grading.
This can be a motivation to learn
something new with full of passion.
Inject enthusiasm into our studies so on you
won’t feel lamed during the learning process.
Therefore, anyone can learn meaningfully
without concentrating on grades, which means
fully understood by ourselves and have been
stored in our brain.
Steven Levi said : “Never stop learning and
never stop thinking and asking, ‘Why not?’”
Please do feel more enjoy in the learning
process and in the same time improving your
abilities, as incremental improvement is
unstoppable once you invest in learning.
Scores don't matter, learning does.
Your test score is not the only indicator of
your future success or failure.
Always keep it in your mind that what you’ve
learn will always remain with you.
Your worth, in the long run, would be
defined by what you know and who you are,
rather than your score.
As what Robert Greene said : “The future
belongs to those who learn more skills and
combine them in creative ways.”
Last but not the least, there’s one more
thing you should know about the advantage of
learning.
Learning empowers us to make a better
decisions.
We’re able to train our brain through
learning to handle a wide range of challenges,
which means it encourage us to solve
challenging problems in our daily life.
For examples, the interaction with the
people around us, collaboration in a team work
and conflicts that may occur with the others.
It’s clear to see that learning without grading
able us in making choice to achieve greater
impact.
“Education is not the learning of facts, but
the training of the mind to think,” said by Albert
Einstein.
In that case, do always maintain your
curiosity and ensure deep understanding in
learning as well because improvement does
really more matter.
Your life is shaped not by your conditions,
but by your decisions, which means what
matters are the decisions you take from here
on.
Remember to make decisions actively
instead of letting the world decide for you by
judging you with the grades.
Hence, now is the time for me to summarize
the topic what I’ve tell you today.
As conclusion from the above, it’s obvious
that the concept of learning is more important
than grading which include self-discipline, as
motivation to learn further without decreasing
self-worth, and also a wiser decision to be
chosen.
“Life is a journey, not a destination.” said
Ralph Waldo Emerson.
The process of learning is more important
than the result or “end goal.”
Although learning without grading sounds
great, but there’s also some requirements to
fulfill.
We need to identify the types of information
that can be understood easily.
Don’t forget too to set up learning goals first
in your life and break the goal down into parts
so you can move toward it easily as you have
a fairly high likelihood of doing it.
