Chapter 17 Misfortune in Madrid Group 3

Rizal arrived in Madrid in August 1890 to seek justice for his family and tenants in Calamba who had been forcibly ejected from their lands. Despite his efforts with the Filipino colony and Spanish newspapers and officials, his appeals were unsuccessful. While in Madrid, Rizal dealt with personal struggles as well, including the marriage of his fiancee Leonor to another man. He challenged a critic of the Filipinos to a duel but ultimately declined a leadership position among the Filipino community to avoid disunity. In early 1891, Rizal bid farewell to Madrid as he departed for Biarritz, leaving behind unsuccessful efforts to address the injustices faced by his family and countrymen.
