Narrative:
Reading skill is very important as it serves as a tool for students to learn since they have to read their lessons in
order to learn them. Hence, teachers put so much efforts in finding strategies that will be appropriate and effective for
teaching reading.
After PHIL-IRI Pretest in grade 4 section Jose Rizal, result showed that there were three pupils who were slow
readers and needed remediation. Right away, the teacher prepared different strategies to help these pupils keep up with
the class so that they won’t be left behind. She used techniques such as A Word A Day (AWAD), Ten Words a Week,
Dolch Basic Sight Words, Fuller Method Paragraph Reading, Reading Comprehension Worksheets and many more. These
techniques proved to be effective as there have been positive changes with the pupils. Slowly but surely, they we’re able
to read better and a bit faster as the days go by. Each one of the three slow readers were able to show remarkable
improvement. Just fifteen minutes of remedial reading each day can make a big difference in their life.
This showed that with hard work, patience, and resourcefulness on the part of the teacher can accomplish a lot.
Some inspirations, understanding, and encouragement for slow readers are also very helpful.
