room is shared by three students. Usually, two juniors are put under a senior, who takes care of
them. We have a good natured, soft-spoken, and disciplined warden. Though he is friendly with
all the students, he does not tolerate any indiscipline. He has a firm conviction, which makes the
boys to follow all the rules and regulation of the hostel. The food served is of very good quality.
We are provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which is not only tasty, but also healthy and
nutritious. My roommates are very friendly with me. My senior is very caring, and the other boy
is very accommodative. We live in an amicable, friendly environment.

Write a letter to your friend about the celebration of Independence Day in your school
using the clues given below:
Independence Day – Meaningful celebration – Students offered Shramadhan – cultural

Dear Sahana,
How are you? I thought you would come to Halehalli on the 15th as you had a holiday. In
a way. I was happy that you did not come because this year I was very busy on the Independence
Day. Every year I had thought of making the celebration meaningful; but did not know how. This
year our school came up with a unique idea. Our teachers took us to a small village where the
government school has no facilities at all. The whole lot of us, after the hoisting of the flag,
offered Shramadhan and leveled the playground. In the evening, we entertained the villagers
with a street play on family planning.
Oh Sahana! I felt for the first time that I spent the Independence Day meaningfully. This
was my way of paying homage to the freedom fighters of India. What do you think?
Yours,
Sheela.

the clues given below:
Time – day of Annual Day – Chief Guest – Message of the Chief Guest – prize

Dear Prakash,
I’m so proud of the Annual Day celebrations that we recently had that I want to share my
joy with you. The celebrations were carried out with such precision that I feel other schools can
take our programme as an example.
Our celebrations started at 5 p.m sharp with a Guard of Honour being extended to our
Chief Guest. We had a renowned surgeon as our chief guest. His message was highly motivating.
He stressed on human values and inspired students to fight for social justice whenever they
witness any form of injustice. 250 meritorious students received their certificates from the
honourable guest.
This was followed by a meaningful cultural programme. The highlight of the programme
was the kannada play ‘Huvi’ which had the message of protecting the environment. The
programme ended exactly at 8 p.m with the chief guest and others showering praises on all those
who took part in the various items. Our H.M was so happy that he declared a holiday for the next
day!
I have a great sense of satisfaction because I was the Master of Ceremonies. We have a
DVD of the whole programme and I will get it when I come down.

Write a letter to your friend about celebration of Teachers’ day in your school using the
clues given below:
Celebrating of Teachers’ Day – assembling in the field – prayer and welcome – cultural
activities – speeches by parents and guests – vote of thanks – distribution of sweet.
Dear Rajiv,
How are you? I know that September is a busy month for you. We have our sports day
and students’ day lined up for the third and fourth weeks of September. We just finished
celebrating Teachers’ Day.
It was a grand affair as the PTA organized the whole programme. We had some serious
as well as some interesting moments. As soon as we assembled in the field, our seniors led us in
prayer. Our PTA president then welcomed the gathering. A cultural programme on the role of a
teacher was organized. After two parents expressed their sentiments for the teachers, all the
teachers were felicitated with a memento. Our Head Master thanked all the gathered and
especially the PTA Executive Committees. The best part of the programme was of course the
very end because we were all given sweets.
Do you celebrate Teachers’ Day in your school? Celebrations are fun, aren’t they? I wish
I had more of them.

Arun

The Editor,
The City News
Sir,
First, there are only two buses, which come to Emmekere, and neither keeps o its timing.
Very often buses do not play at all and the reason offered is that they are out of order. From the
starting point, if the bus is not there, the passengers have to walk for a minimum of 15 minutes to
get another bus or rickshaw. To add to the woe, when the buses run late, if passengers seek an
explanation, they are treated very rudely. In addition, as if to punish them, the driver races
through, without stopping at proper stops!
We are fed up with the existing condition and our complaints have been ignored. As the
last resort, I voice my anger in this column hoping that immediate action will be taken.
Yours faithfully,

This is very inadequate as at least 500 people commute daily from Varthur to Bangalore for job,

Although Varthur is a small village with only around 60,000 populations, there is a lot of
