ROSEBUD (Cello, Flute, and French Horn) (Cotter)

This document contains a graphic maze and performance directions for a piece involving cello, flute, and French horn. Each instrument starts in a corner and plays melodic fragments, holding the final note before navigating the maze. They must interpret fragments based on the color's associated emotion at each location. Dynamics and styles change depending on proximity to corners (ppp, dolce) or center (fff, agitato). Performers can explore other instrument's corners over a suggested 4 minute performance.

MAZE

…a piece for cello, flute and French horn…

David Thomas Cotter

Performance Directions

1. Each instrument starts from its respective corner, playing their first melodic fragment

2. Once the fragment has been played, the performer must hold the final note before choosing a route through the maze
and merging into the next melodic fragment

3. Whilst playing each melodic fragment, the performer must endeavor to interpret the fragment with the emotion they
associate with the colour of the background at that particular location

4. When playing melodic fragments towards the corners of the triangle, the performers must endeavour to play ppp and
dolce

5. When playing melodic fragments towards the centre of the triangle, the performers must endeavor to play fff and
agitato

6. The axes should be treated as continuous scales, with the performer endeavoring to play the dynamics between ppp &
fff, and the styles between dolce & agitato

7. Eventually, the performers may start venturing towards the other instrument’s corners

8. Theoretically, the piece can last forever, but a performance time of 4 minutes should be aimed for
