What is Behavior-Based Safety?
Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) is a process
that helps employees
choose
and
identify
a safe behavior over an unsafe one
Behavior-Based Safety
Basic Behavior Principles
Safety in the workplace is a combination of three
measurable components:
the people their their behavior
environment
Only when these three elements are combined can
workplace accidents be controlled
Behavior-Based Safety

the people
The ‘people’ component consists of the employees’:
Physical Experience
capabilities
Training

their environment
The ‘work environment’ represents:
Engineering Controls Equipment
Work Culture Job Task

their behavior
The most overlooked component is ‘behavior’
– what a person does on the job
and how he does it
Behavior-Based Safety
BBS Process
Behavior-Based Safety is based on four key components:
A behavioral observation and feedback process
A formal review of observation data
Improvement goals
Reinforcement for improvement and goal
attainment
Behavior-Based Safety
BBS Process
Observations provide direct and measurable information
on the employees’ safe work practices.
Employees are observed performing their routine tasks.
The observer documents both safe and unsafe behaviors
The employee is then provided positive feedback on the
safe behaviors and non-threatening feedback on the
unsafe behaviors.
The feedback is in the form of suggestions on correcting
the unsafe behaviors
Behavior-Based Safety
BBS Process
formal review of observation data
The data is analyzed to determine the employee’s (or
department’s) improvement in safe behaviors.
The improvement should be displayed for employees to
view.
This provides positive reinforcing feedback to the
employees.
Behavior-Based Safety
BBS Process
Improvement goals
Based on the data analysis, setting improvement goals
increases the effectiveness of feedback and the
success of the behavior-based safety process
Behavior-Based Safety
BBS Process
Reinforcement for improvement and goal attainment
The Management must provide immediate positive
feedback to reinforce safe behavior.
Rewards can be an effective means of reinforcing goal
attainment.
