Elements and Principles of


Contemporary Art Forms
Appropriation

As cited by the famous painter Pablo Picasso “Good artists copy,


great artists steal”. These are existing artworks that are appropriate to
produce another art and to look contemporary. It is a combination of the
new and old elements. It is defined as the use of prints, images, and icons
to produce another art form. It combines past from present and revives
interests to existing forms of art. Below are examples of Appropriation.

Performance

Performance evolved to “emphasize spontaneous elements of chance”– Walker Art


Center. Interpreting various human activities such as chores, routines, and rituals, to
socially relevant theme such as poverty, commercialism and even war.

Space
Arts that transform spaces, for example flash mobs, art installations in malls and
parks. Site Specific Art Forms – art form that is performed and positioned in a
specific space such as public spaces. Examples are flash mobs and art installations.

Hybridity
Is the usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely medium or materials to
produce an artwork. Examples are coffee used in painting, miniature sculptures
using crayons.

Technology

Usage of technology in the creation and dissemination of art works video phenomenon
from MTV to the popular video streaming platform YouTube. Recording performances,
video posting, sharing, live streaming.

3 MAJOR CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS

1. Visual or Space Arts – Are also known as “Space Arts” simply because they occupy
space in making and displaying them.

Examples of visual arts are Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture.

 Painting – Are visual arts that are expressed either by lines, form, texture,
value, or color. It is being used as decorations, educational device, etc.

 Sculpture – expressed either by carving, shaping, or molding. It deals mostly


with the human figure, animals, figurines, decorative lampshades and pottery.

 Architecture – This visual art is expressed through rhythmic features, such


as windows, ornaments, columns and tile flooring.

2. Auditory Arts – Are primarily heard, they are also known as “Time Arts”
because they exist in time. Examples are Literature, and Music.

 Literature – This includes writing poems, short stories, novels, plays,


histories, biographies, and essays. It is also known as “Fine Writing”.

Music – Is a combination of sounds. It is said to be the most dynamic, most


emotional, most universal, and most abstract of all fine arts.

3. Combined Arts – Also called “Performing or Performance Arts” it combines both


visual and auditory elements. They are usually performed on stage or on screen.

 Circus – A form of entertainment that generally consists of displays of


horsemanship; exhibitions by gymnasts, aerialists, wild-animal trainers, and
performing animals; and comic pantomime by clowns.

 Dance - It is based upon music or any rhythmic sound. It is characterized by


rhythm and repetition.

 Opera -This is a stage drama with orchestral accompaniment, in which music
is the dominant element, the performers singing all or most of their lines.

expressions and body movements rather than words.

aspects of their performance.

 Motion Picture - It is a series of images that are projected onto a screen to


create the illusion of motion. Motion pictures—also called movies, films, or the
cinema—are one of the most popular forms of entertainment, enabling people
to immerse themselves in an imaginary world for a short period of time.

Lesson 7: Art Forms from Region 10 Northern
Mindanao

Region 10 - Thru the Golden Gateway

Region 10 also called Northern Mindanao, is composed of the 5 provinces


namely; Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Camiguin and Lanao del
Norte and their 9 cities of Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, El Salvador, Ozamiz,Tangub,
Oroquieta, Ma- Iaybalay,Valencia and [Link] whole region covers a total land
area of 19,279.60 sq km. with a total population of 3,505,558 as of 2000 Census,
some 84 municipalities and about 2,020 barangays.

Emmanuel S. Mulawan

As a 10-year old, Emmanuel S. Mulawan loved


watching Disney movies. He was fascinated by
the stories and the characters. But then, he
also spent a lot of time drawing. Some of his
worthwhile projects and commissioned works as
commercial painter and artist are: Rancher’s Steak
house (Malaybalay City: 2013-2014), Kenya Kafe
(Lifestyle District Cagayan de Oro City: 2015),
Mom’s Pig Out (SM City Cagayan de Oro: 2015),
One Yoga Wellness Studio.(Velez St. Carmen
Cagayan de Oro City), Miss Cagayan de Oro 2015

Villamor John Estrada


John, as he is fondly called by his friends comes
from the Bukidnon tribe of Bukidnon Province.
John started doing his artwork since 2003. He took
up a short course on a 6-month module in visual
arts. He started to paint when he became a
member of the Association of Local Artists of
Bukidnon(ALAB) and he keeps his pieces for
collection. He dreams to be recognized as a good
visual artist. He is inspired by the works of
Fernando Amorsolo. His favorite subject for his
unique combination of colors is the Indigenous
People. Oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, pastel is
his preferred medium. He wants to be known as a
famous Indigenous Artist.

Festivals in Region 10
Kaamulan Festival

is an ethnic cultural festival held


annually in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon
in the Philippines from the second half of
February to March 10, the anniversary
date of the foundation of Bukidnon as a
province in 1917. It is held to celebrate
the culture and tradition of the seven
ethnic tribal groups Bukidnon, Higaonon,
Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug,
Tigwahanon and Umayamnon that
originally inhabit the province. It is the
only ethnic festival in the Philippines.

Lanzones Festival

Held every third week of October and it is


a four day grand celebration of the
lanzones fruit. The most important
livelihood in Camiguin is lanzones.
Lanzones Festival in Mambadjao Camiguin
is celebrated with a weekend street dancing
competition and parties, cultural shows,
parade and beauty pageant (coronation of
Mutya sa Buahanan)
Higalaay Festival

(Formerly known as Kagay-an Festival,


then to HigalaayKagay-an Festival in 2014
is a festival held each year in Cagayan de
Oro, Philippines, every 28th day of
August, celebrating the feast day of St.
Augustine – patron saint of the city.

Las Bolas de Fuego

An annual church festival, in which


young men throw fiery, gasoline-
soaked rags. Local residents in the town
of Nejapa, located some 30 kilometres
north of San Salvador, gather every
August 31 in honor of a huge volcanic
eruption in 1658.

Alimango Festival

A mountain of steamed crabs stood in


the middle of the crowd in this colorful
town of Lala to grace the 16th Alimango
festival Wednesday, March 22. The free-
for-all “Alimango mountain” which weighed
about 1.2 tons graced the 68th founding
anniversary of the town.

Diyandi Festival

Derived its name from "diyandi" which


means "celebrate" while "mag-
diyandi" means "to celebrate". It is
celebrated on every September.

Kaamulan Festival

An ethnic cultural festival held


annually in Malaybalay City,
Bukidnon in the Philippines from the
second half of February to March 10,
the anniversary date of the foundation
of Bukidnon as a province in 1917.
Pasungko Festival

The province of Misamis Occidental comes


alive with a festive mood every first week of
November as it celebrates the Pasungko
Festival. ‘Pasungko’ – a Subanen word
which means “thanksgiving after a
fruitful harvest”, provides a glimpse into
the colorful culture of the Subanen people.

Inug-og Festival

Is an ethnic festival of the Suban-on


culture that is celebrated every 14th of
October in conjunction with the weeklong
festivities of the City.

Subayan Keg Subanen Festival

Is celebrated every 15th to 16th of July in


the town of Ozamiz City, Province of
Misamis Occidental. Its highlights are the
week-long trade fair and street dancing.
This festival is a way for the locals to
show the rich Subanon cultural
heritage.

Dalit Festival

Held every September 29 is celebrated


in honor of Tangub City's patron saint,
St. Michael the Archangel. The Search
for Dalit Festival Queen, a newly added
attraction, is already four years old.

Hudyaka Festival

Features a street dancing competition, with


each performance depicting the history
of Laguindingan's foundation as a
municipality of Misamis Oriental.
Golden Harvest Festival

All roads lead to Valencia City, Bukidnon


this December 2016 until January 12, 2017
as the city officially celebrates the Golden
Harvest Festival. The month-long festivity
is a thanksgiving and celebration of the
bountiful golden harvest of Valencia.

Musicians from Region 10

Waway Linsahay Saway (Christian name:


Rodelio), is a byword among contemporary artists
and indigenous communities in Mindanao. A
teacher at the Talaandig School of Living
Traditions in the highlands of Sungko, Lantapan,
Bukidnon, Waway lives on his tribe's music and
art.

Mark Arazo Bautista (born August 10, 1983) is a


Filipino singer, actor and commercial model.
Bautista received his career break when he
became a grand finalist on the Philippine reality TV
talent search Star for a Night where he placed
second behind Sarah Geronimo. He transferred to
GMA Network in 2010.

TJ Monterde a Filipino vocalist known for his


recording Ikaw at Ako and self-title EP, both which
were released through PolyEast Information. He’s
also worked well as a Television host. He
published his first initial track, “Ikaw At Ako,” to
YouTube in 2012.

Literature of Region 10

Emmanuel R. Lacaba

December 10, 1948 – March 18, 1976), popularly


known as Eman Lacaba, was a Filipino writer,
poet, essayist, playwright, fictionist, scriptwriter,
songwriter and activist and he is considered as
the only poet warrior of the Philippines. Lacaba
is considered the only poet warrior of the
Philippines and a genius while studying at the
Ateneo de Manila. The Cultural Center of the
Philippines (CCP) confers awards the Gawad
Eman Lacaba to young poets.

Jose Maria Flores Lacaba

Popularly known as Pete Lacaba, is a Filipino film


writer, editor, poet, screenwriter, journalist and
translator. Lacaba was recognized for his
coverage of the First Quarter Storm, an anti-
Marcos movement, in 1970. His poetry
collections include Ang Mga Kagilagilalas na
Pakikipagsapalaran ni Juan de la Cruz (1979), Sa
Daigdig ng Kontradiksyon(1991) and Sa Panahon
ng Ligalig (1991). He worked with well-known
directors like Lino Brocka and Mike de Leon . He
continued writing poems, and in 1999, was
decorated as one of 100 "Bayani ng Sining".
