1 Syllabus
The course “Principles of Business
Administration” is designed as an introduction to

provide goods and services to meet the
demands of society. All such businesses have
basic activities in common:
• Innovation
• Operations
• Marketing
• Human Resource Management
• Finance and Accounting
Businesses share certain characteristics on the
structural-, organizational- and environmental
level irrespective of profit-making or non-profit
concerns. The functions and organisational
structures will be introduced and furthermore
special focus on the interfaces and intersections
of functions and their responsibilities will be
highlighted. The influential factors of business
such as the economy and the state will be
discussed to create a basic understanding of the
so called business environment.
Organizational aspects of business such as size,
ownership, structure and corporate culture will be
an essential part of this lecture, as well as issues
of management and leadership and the strategic
responsibility of management. This course will
build the bridge to the in-depth courses such as
Accounting, Finance and Investment, Marketing,
