Energy Transformation in Toys

The lesson plan is about conservation of mechanical energy and forms of mechanical energy. The students will create a device that demonstrates conservation of mechanical energy. The lesson will involve students operating toys like a yo-yo and friction toy car to observe energy transformations as the toys move. Students will identify the different forms of energy involved, such as potential and kinetic energy, and trace the energy transformations by sketching the toys in motion. The goal is for students to understand and appreciate how energy is transferred and transformed in various activities.

LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 9

Content Standard for the Quarter:

The learner’s demonstrates an understanding of:
Conservation of mechanical energy.

Performance Standard for the Quarter:

The learners shall be able to:
Create a device that shows conservation of mechanical energy.

I. Learning Competencies
Learning Competency Code
Explain energy S9FE- IVc-39
transformation in various
activities/ events (e.g.,
waterfalls, archery,
amusement rides)
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Forms of Mechanical Energy
References: Science 9; Learner’s Module pp. 261-263
Materials: Power Point Presentation, paper and pen and activity sheet
Value Focus: Appreciate the Forms of Mechanical Energy

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Initiatory Phase (Explore)
1. Preparatory Activity
 Opening Prayer One student will lead the prayer.
 Greetings Good Afternoon Ma’am!
 Checking of Attendance

2. Drill and Review - Light

(The teacher will flash pictures of - Sound
different forms of energy) - Mechanical
- Heat
3. Motivation
(The teacher will show a video clip)

Guide Questions:
 What do you observed in the video? - A running roller coaster.
 Have you ever experience riding in -
the roller coaster? - No Ma’am, Yes Ma’am
 What makes the roller coaster
move? - The roller coaster moves
because of the machine they
used.
 Do you think there is energy present
there? - Yes Ma’am
 What forms of energy present in the
roller coaster? - Potential and Kinetic
 What will happen if the roller
coaster stops? - There is an output energy.

4. Statement of the Aim

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a. Explain energy transformation in various activities.
b. Identify the form of Mechanical Energy.
c. Appreciate the importance of Energy Transformation.

5. Unlocking of Difficulties

 Output Energy- the energy that comes out the system.

 Thermal Energy- is the internal energy of an object due to the kinetic energy of its atoms
and/or molecules.
 Frictional Force- refers to the force generated by two surfaces that contacts and slide
against each other.
 Transformation- complete or major change in someone’s appearance.

B. Lesson Proper
Teacher’s Activity Students Activity
A. Activity

Little Shop of Toys

Perform the activity using the materials given:

1. Yoyo
2. Frictional toy car
3. Activity sheet/ Activity Notebook

Procedure:
1. Operate each toy to move and observe closely what
causes it to start and stop moving.
2. For each toy, identify all forms of energy involved in
the process.
3. Trace the energy transformations by sketching and
labeling the toy while in motion.
4. For each toy or object, answer the following
questions.

B. Analysis
Guide Questions:

1. What does the toy or object do? A. Yoyo

- The yoyo can unroll down and roll

up.

B. Friction Toy Car

- The friction toy car will move if
you push backward against a high
friction floor.

2. What energy changes take place as this toy or A. Yoyo

Object operates? - When you hold the yoyo there is a
potential energy but when you
flicked down, it changes into
kinetic energy.

B. Friction Toy Car

- When you pushed down and
pulled backward the toy car has
reach its potential energy and
when you released, it will change
into kinetic energy.

3. What form does the stored energy start out

with? A. Yoyo
- The yoyo started with potential
energy.

B. Friction Toy Car

- The toy car started with potential
energy when pulled back before
release.
4. What form does the stored energy turn into?
A. Yoyo
- The yoyo ended with kinetic
energy.

B. Friction Toy Car

- The toy car moved with kinetic
energy.
5. What form is the output energy when it stops?
A. Yoyo
- All its potential and kinetic energy
are converted into other forms of
energy.

B. Friction Toy Car

- Potential energy and other forms
of energy like thermal/heat
energy.
6. What made each object move a certain
displacement and what made each objet come - In every object there is already a
to stop after being displaced? stored energy and the stored
energy can be transferred or
(Discussion of Forms of Mechanical Energy through video transformed into other form of
clip) energy.

C. Abstraction (Generalization)
1. What is energy transformation?
- Is a change of energy from one
form to another.
2. Trace the energy transformation in playing yoyo.
- Potential energy  Kinetic
Energy
(holding the yoyo) (unrolling the
yoyo)
3. What are the forms of Mechanical Energy?
- 2 Forms of Mechanical Energy
1. Potential Energy- energy at rest or
stored energy having the potential
to do mechanical work.
2. Kinetic Energy- energy associated
with motion.
D. Application
 Cite daily activities that involve potential and
kinetic energy. - Riding on the swing.
- Playing seesaw.
- Sliding on the slide
 What is the importance of Energy
Transformation? - Energy transformation is
important because it allows
society to perform useful work.
Cars, planes, computers and
refrigerators… all of these
functions only through converting
energy from one form to another.

E. Assessment
Direction: Choose the correct answer.

1. Which event illustrates the direct transformation of potential to kinetic energy?

a. A basketball player catches a flying ball.
b. A kalesa moves from rest.
c. Kathy’s arrow released from its bow.

2. What type of energy when a bike is resting at the top of the hill?
a. Potential
b. Kinetic
c. Both a and b

Assignment:
 Identify the factors affecting potential and kinetic energy.
