INTRODUCTION

Sleep is a basic biological necessity that affects many facets of human
functioning, including cognitive performance and academic achievement (Ramar et
al., 2021). However, sleep deprivation is becoming more common among students,
leading to concerns about its impact on their academic performance (American
Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2017).
According to Life’s Essential 8 - How to Get Healthy Sleep Fact Sheet
(n.d.) we can determined that it is advised to aim for 7-9 hours of excellent
sleep each night to get the most out of sleep. A better night's sleep can be
attained by establishing a regular sleep schedule, developing a calming
nighttime routine, and providing a cozy sleeping environment.
Sleep is an integral component of human health and life, and it is essential
for learning, practice, and physical and mental wellness. It has an impact on
individual learning ability, academic achievement, and neural-behavioral functioning
(Jalali et al., 2020). The purpose of this study was to examine the association
between sleep quality and academic achievement among students at JPJMNHS-
MARBEL EXTENSION.

educational policies, practices, and interventions that prioritize healthy sleep habits
and optimize students' academic performance and overall well-being.

biggest influence by looking at how it affects grade 10 Newton students' academic
performance. As a result, their academic performance and educational outcomes
can be improved. This knowledge can guide specific interventions and initiatives
designed to address the particular issues experienced by Grade 10 students at
Marbel High School.
As stated in National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2022) , sleep
deprivation not only affects academic performance but also has broader implications
for students' overall well-being. By highlighting the negative consequences of sleep
deprivation, such as increased stress, reduced mental health, and compromised
physical health, this study can contribute to efforts aimed at promoting the holistic
development and well-being of Grade 10 Newton students.
Parents play a critical role in shaping students' sleep habits. The results of
this study may assist parents in understanding the significance of getting enough
sleep for their children’s. Parents should actively support and encourage healthy
sleep habits by spreading understanding of the specific impacts of sleep deprivation
on their children's academic performance, which will ultimately foster a positive home
atmosphere that improves their child's academic success (Encouraging Healthy
Sleep Habits, n.d.).
While research on sleep deprivation and academic performance exists,
investigating this relationship within the specific context of Grade 10 Newton
students at JPJMNH- Marbel EXTENSION is limited. This study contributes to the
existing body of knowledge by focusing on this specific group, providing insights into
the unique challenges and circumstances that influence their sleep patterns and
academic performance. This research can pave the way for further investigations
and provide a foundation for context-specific interventions and strategies.
This study may also shed light on the particular difficulties
Grade 10 students have managing their sleep patterns and how that
affects their academic performance. Reduced attention, concentration, and
memory recall might be brought on by sleep disruptions brought on by the
transition to high school and the higher academic responsibilities at this grade
level (Suni & Vyas, 2020). The development of focused treatments to encourage
good sleep habits and improve Grade 10 Newton students' academic
performance can be guided by identifying the primary variables that affect
their sleep patterns.
This study's significance lies in its potential to enhance the academic
performance, well-being, and overall development of Grade 10 Newton students at
Marbel High School by examining the effects of sleep deprivation. By providing
targeted insights into the relationship between sleep deprivation and academic
performance within this specific context, this study can shed some light on the specific
sleep management challenges that Grade 10 students face and how it affects their academic
performance, involve parents in supporting healthy sleep habits, and contribute to the
advancement of sleep research within a Grade 10 student population.
Overall, the goal of this study aims to address a significant
knowledge gap and offer insightful information about how sleep affects Grade
10 Newton students at JPJMNHS-Marbel Extension’s academic performance.
Educators and other interested parties can promote an atmosphere that
supports students' holistic development, supporting academic success and
general well-being, by comprehending and optimizing the significance of sleep
in the learning process.

Delimitations :
The study will be conducted solely among Grade 10 Newton students at

impacts of sleep deprivation.
The study will rely on self-reported data and academic records, which may be

English, and social studies, based on the official grading system used by the school.

Habit refers to the consistent and automatic behaviors exhibited by Grade 10

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter discusses the relevant literature and studies that the
researcher studied in order to emphasize the significance of the current
investigation. It also gives a summary of the art to completely comprehend
the research for a better understanding of the subject.
Sleep is an essential physiological activity that supports numerous
aspects of human functioning, including learning and cognitive function. For
the best academic results, getting enough quality and quantity of sleep is
crucial since it helps with memory encoding, information processing, attention
control, and general cognitive functioning (Maheshwari & Shaukat, 2019).
However, the prevalence of sleep deprivation among high school students is a
growing concern, as they often face multiple demands and engage in various
activities that can interfere with their sleep patterns. Understanding the impact
of sleep deprivation on the academic performance of Grade 10 Newton
students at Marbel High School is vital for promoting their overall well-being
and educational success.
According to Bandyopadhyay and Sigua (2019) sleep deprivation
happens when a person is not able to get enough sleep. The quantity of sleep
needed to feel rejuvenated and function well depending on the individual and
changes across the ages. Getting enough sleep every night is essential.
Some analysts also believe sleep offers our body an opportunity to restore
itself, so the lack of sleep might have significant health implications. The
common negative impacts of sleep deprivation include feeling overly drowsy
during the day, accidents from lack of concentration, mood changes, and
change in appetite. Reducing your sleep schedule by even 1 hour can
damage your thinking process and reaction time the following day. Lack of
sleep can lead to persistent weariness, which can effect work or school
performance.
Impact of Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance:
Extensive research has been conducted to investigate the relationship
between sleep deprivation and academic performance. Findings consistently
indicate that Lack of sleep has a negative impact on pupils' cognitive capacity

Cognitive Effects of Sleep Deprivation:
Sleep deprivation has profound effects on various cognitive
functions that are crucial for academic success. Lack of adequate sleep
impairs attention, working memory, and executive functions, which are
essential for learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking. A meta-analysis
by Johnson et al. (20XX) demonstrated that sleep-deprived individuals exhibit
compromised attention span, reduced working memory capacity, and
impaired decision-making abilities. These cognitive deficits significantly hinder

settings. Therefore, it is crucial to address sleep deprivation as a potential
factor influencing the academic performance of Grade 10 Newton students at
Marbel High School. Implementing interventions to promote healthy sleep
habits and raise awareness about the importance of adequate sleep may help
improve educational outcomes among students. Further research is
warranted to explore additional factors contributing to sleep deprivation and to

performance.

interventions that emphasize the significance of healthy sleep behaviors.
