Assignment 1 Writing
Information for students:
In order to meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 1, all students must write a
problem solution essay.

Problem & Solution Essay

Your essay is based on research focused on the problems and solutions for your chosen topic
You may select one of the following areas to brainstorm as a suitable topic:
 Medical problems – covid, etc.
 Fitness and health – poverty, obesity, drugs in sport, etc.
 Hospitality - food waste, Airbnb
 Interior/Fashion/Communication Design - technology, fast fashion
 Marketing and advertising
 Environmental - pollution, ecological concerns
 A topic approved by your teacher
Learning Outcomes:
 Can demonstrate effective academic writing skills
 Can provide a clear description of the problem and provide possible solutions supported by
secondary research
 Can reference sources appropriately and avoid plagiarism
 Find 6 sources (they can be a mix of online articles, government websites, industry sources)
Word count: 500 - 600 words
Date due: First draft due on Monday in week 3
Final essay due on Tuesday in week 4

A well-structured essay must include:
 A cover page clearly stating your name, student ID, title of your essay, your teacher’s name
and date
 An appropriate introduction
 In the body of your essay include:
- Description of the problem based on information from research
- Explanation of why it needs to be resolved
- At least two solutions, which must be supported by research
 An appropriate conclusion in which you summarise the main points
 A reference list following the APA 7th referencing conventions

The mark for each competency represents the level to which these criteria have been fulfilled. The overall mark for this assignment is
determined from the average of the above areas of competency.
Minimum requirements to pass:
 EAP1 exit 5.5: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in at least three competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining competency (first block), and a
minimum grade 2 in two competencies and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining two competencies (second block). This grade represents 25% of the
final mark.
 EAP2 exit 6.0: achieve a minimum of grade 2 in one competency and a grade higher than 2 in the remaining three competencies (first block), and a
minimum grade 3 in all four competencies (second block). This grade represents 25% of the final mark.
 EAP2 exit 6.5: achieve a minimum of grade 3 in at least three competencies and a grade higher than 3 in the remaining competency (first block) and a
minimum grade 3 in at least two competencies and a grade higher than 3 in the remaining two competencies (second block). This grade represents
25% of the final mark.

Assignment 2 Speaking
Information for students:
To meet the requirements of English for Academic Purposes 1, all students must give a problem and
solution presentation based on primary and secondary research.
PowerPoint Presentation – Problem & Solution

 This is a group assessment (pairs or small groups) focusing on your ability to discuss
and identify a current issue/problem, conduct research, and deliver a presentation outlining
the findings
 This presentation can be about the same topic as your essay or a different problem and
solution topic
 The primary research will involve conducting a survey of 8-10 questions with a minimum of
10 respondents.
 The secondary research will involve using 6 academic sources (these can include a mix of
books, journal articles, appropriate websites)
Learning Outcomes:
 Can present clearly and in detail on complex subjects, specific to chosen discipline
 Can prepare and conduct research via a simple survey and present findings in a formal
context using presentation software
 Can take an active part in discussion in academic contexts, accounting for and sustaining
views
 Can incorporate a graph/chart and describe it accurately
Presentation Length: minimum 8-10 minutes; plus 6-8 minutes of questions and discussion
Date due: First draft due on Monday week 4
Final presentations delivered in week 5 on Monday and/or Tuesday
The following components must be included in your presentation:
 An appropriate introduction, body and conclusion

 12 slides (6 slides per student) in the body of your presentation with visual representation
of your survey findings (e.g. graph, table, pie chart etc.)
 Time for questions, comments and feedback from your audience
