1. SKOS SIMPLIFIES ALL KNOWLEDGE
SKOS takes all the knowledge organization systems (such as

2. SKOS IS BASED ON THE RDF
As an application of the Resource Description Framework
(RDF), SKOS allows concepts to be created and published on
the internet, linked with data on the Web and integrated into
other concept schemes.

3. SKOS IS A BRIDGE
SKOS helps you understand how terms are connected and how they relate to other

5. CONCEPTS ARE THE
FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENT OF SKOS
Machines are not that smart…unless we tell them what something

6. LABELS RELATE SIMILAR IDEAS
Labels are used to further describe concepts
CAR AUTOMOBILE
VEHICLE
AUTOMOTIVE
ex:car rdf:type skos:Concept;
skos:prefLabel “car”@en;
skos:altLabel “automobile”@en;

7. WE STILL NEED HUMAN-
READABLE DOCUMENTATION

about the definition, scope, or usage of a concept.
It’s helpful for people who are unfamiliar with the
concept.

8. SEMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS
Semantic relations show VOITURE
how concepts are related
to each other. It's like
creating a web of
connections between
SPORTS
different ideas, so that TRUCKS CARS CARS
people can understand
how they are related and
how they fit together.

10. SKOS “IS A FINISHED PRODUCT”
There has been no working group assigned to review or update SKOS since
the recommendation by the W3C was published.
SKOS has been successful, with thousands of published vocabularies and
thesauri making use of it and a healthy collection of tools for creating,
validating, and viewing or using it.
