Jose Rizal
For Rizal, the mission of education is to elevate the country to the highest seat of glory and to develop
the people's mentality. Since education is the foundation of society and a prerequisite for social
progress, Rizal claimed that only through education could the country be saved from domination.
Rizal was an excellent student and had garnered high scholastic records in all subjects. On March 23,
1877, the 15-year-old Rizal received his Bachelor of Arts diploma (equivalent to present-day high school
diploma) and was among one of the outstanding students of their class.
•Jose Rizal's first teacher was his mother, who had taught him how to read and pray and who had
encouraged him to write poetry. Later, private tutors taught the young Rizal Spanish and Latin, before
he was sent to a private school in Biñan. Maestro Celestino, Maestro Lucas Padua, and Maestro Leon
Monroy
She was the one who firstopened his eyes and
heart to the world around him, with all of its beauty as well as its intolerance and cruelty. Dona
Teodora was a clever, intelligent, compassionate, anddevoted wife and mother toher family, who shaped
Rizal'sdisposition as a poet, adreamer, a self-less, and a genius Si Dona Teodora ay isang matalino,

Rizal goes to Binan,Laguna:
- June, 1869 Rizal left for Binan
- Was accompanied by Paciano his older brother
- In academic studies, Rizal beat all Binan boys
- He surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin, and other subjects
•Rizal first studied under Justiniano Aquino Cruz in Biñan, Laguna before he was sent to Manila. As to his
father's request, he took the entrance examination in Colegio de San Juan de Letran .
the reason why Don Francisco wanted Rizal to study first in Letran is because he believed that Rizal
could develop his knowledge in studying in Letran but later on he realized that for Rizal to attain his
capabilities, he should study in Ateneo where he can manage his abilities and improve all his skills.
•When he was 11 years old, Rizal entered the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He earned excellent marks in
subjects like philosophy, physics, chemistry, and natural history. At this school, he read novels; wrote
prize-winning poetry (and even a melodrama—"Junto al Pasig"); and practiced drawing, painting, and
clay modeling, all of which remained lifelong interests for him.
,alam nyo ba na Rizal almost did not make it to the Ateneo because he was late for registration, and
looked too frail for the rigors of Jesuit education. (Rizal originally thought of going to San Juan de
Letran.)
However, through the intercession of Manuel Jerez, a nephew of Fr. Jose Burgos (one of the three
martyred priests known collectively as Gomburza), Rizal was finally accepted into the Ateneo.
Rizal eventually earned a land surveyor’s and assessor’s degree from the Ateneo Municipal while taking
up Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas. Upon learning that his mother was going
blind, Rizal opted to study ophthalmology at the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. He, however, was
not able to complete the course because “he became politically isolated by adversaries among the
faculty and clergy who demanded that he assimilate to their system.”
• Without his parents' knowledge and consent, but secretly supported by his brother Paciano, he
traveled alone to Madrid, Spain in May 1882 and studied medicine at the Universidad Central de Madrid
where he earned the degree, Licentiate in Medicine. Also, he also attended medical lectures at the
University of Paris and the Universitv of Heidelberq. In Berlin he was inducted as a member of the Berlin
Ethnological Society and the Berlin Anthropological Society under the patronage of the famous
pathologist Rudolf Virchow.
Virchow.
Rizal In Ateneo
In 1872, Rizal was sent by his parents to study in Manila. And so he did.
He entered Ateneo Municipal. As what usually happens, Rizal was discriminated by his classmates and
professors, mainly because he had only a little knowledge about Spain, and also the fact that he was
form Calamba, Laguna. He was also a late enrollee, so that added up to the situation.
But inspite of the negative things that happened to him during this time, he also experienced good
things. The Jesuits thought them about the educational system like discipline, character building and
religious instruction. Because of that, he learned about the real value of education in a person’s life, and
of course, to be strong despite of all the people who were trying to pull him down. He also experienced
and went through hispanization, which made him a kind of better in Spanish than using his own
language – Filipino.
Rizal at UST
With Rizal’s graduation from the Ateneo de Manila, On April 1877, Jose Rizal returned to Manila and
enrolled at the UST, taking the course Philosophy and Letters, though at that time, Rizal was still
confused of what course to study. His freshman subjects were Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy and
History of Philosophy. The following year, Rizal consulted Rev. Fr. Pablo Ramon, the Director of Ateneo
de Manila, as to what course to take. Father Ramon advised him to take up Medicine; therefore he
enrolled in the Medical course, with the hope that he could relieve Dona Teodora’s failing eyesight
after he finished the course in Ophthalmology.
nag-enroll siya sa kursong Medikal with the hope that he could relieve Dona Teodora’s failing eyesight
after he finished the course in Ophthalmology.
