Refers to language reflecting

awareness and sensitivity to

another person’s physical, mental,

cultural, or other disadvantages or

deviations from a norm.

Language sensitivity is very

important to understand because

sometimes it's the choice of words

that can be piercing than swords.

(Chandra, 2017, p.1)
In many situations, one should be very particular in using words and addressing

others not to hurt or offend someone may it be our friends, co-workers, persons

in authority. This is the idea behind political sensitive language.

TABOOS
#!@%&!! TABOOS
Refers to words that are typically

deemed immoral or inappropriate

in everyday language and should

be avoided in polite conversion.

In general, this comprises curse

or swear words, profanities, or

offensive speech.
They are usually based on religion, expressions intended

to offend a particular race or sexual orientation, as well as

parts of the body and bodily processes – especially

relating to sexual activity or using the toilet.

TABOOS
Social anthropologist Edmund Leach identified

TABOOS
three major categories of taboo words and

phrases in English:

1. "Dirty" words that are concerned with sex

and excretion, such as "bugger," "shit."

2. Words that have to do with the Christian

religion, such as "Christ" and "Jesus."

3. Words which are used in "animal abuse"

(calling a person by the name of an

animal), such as "bitch," "cow."

AVOIDING
RACISM
AVOIDING RACISM O IDIN
AVRACISM G
If race or ethnicity is used to describe a person, it has to be relevant

to the information presented. Ethnic and racial labels often change

and deciding which term is the correct one can be hard. Should we

say African American or black? Hispanic or Latino/Latina? American

Indian or Native American? And is Asian the preferred term?

As Hult and Huckin state: "The best rule of thumb is to call people by

whatever term they prefer, just as you should pronounce their

personal name however they want it pronounced. If you are unsure

of what to use to describe a certain group of people, just ask

members of that group" (725-726).

EXAMPLE: AVOID
RAC ING
ISM
Say I’m describing a person. If I say someone is
“a Chinese”, it is perceived that I am implying

that he is one of the many migrants, generalizing

all of the individuals having those origins and

removing merit to their personal situation

nowadays. However, if I say someone is

“Chinese”, this is deemed to be politically

correct as I’m describing their origin.

AVOIDING LET’S HAVE A LOOK AT THE SIZE OF ASIA IN COMPARISON

TO THE WHOLE WORLD MAP.

RACISM

By saying someone is Asian, it seems impersonal and

uninterested. The politically correct way to do it is to be as specific

as possible. Are they filipino? Indian? Bengali? Thai?

actions that could be offensive to others,

especially those relating to sex and race,

should be avoided.
Ely, Meyerson, and Davidson (2006) POLITICAL
CORRECTNESS
define political correctness as a situation “where

unspoken canons of propriety govern behaviour in cross-

cultural interactions — that is, interactions among

people of different races, genders, religions, and other

potentially charged social identity groups”
