corresponds to your answer.
AGREE DISAGREE STATEMENT
An essay is a short composition that presents your
view on a particular topic or subject.
The main purpose of the informative text is to inform
the reader about a specific topic.
4
The informative essay has three parts; the
introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
An informative essay is similar to a persuasive essay
and an argumentative essay.
Comparison and contrast form, cause and effect
form, definition form, sequence form, and problem-
solution form are some of the techniques in writing
informatively.
So, Let’s check! Your score will tell if you really enjoyed your last journey
in using a variety of Informative writing techniques.
Lesson PERSUASIVE WRITING TECHNIQUES
Persuading others to believe in your opinion is not that easy. Writing
to make others act or adopt your viewpoint is a skill a grade 10 student like
you should be able to develop. But, how should you clearly state your opinion
to persuade other people? How will you construct paragraphs that really
sound convincing?
Hooray! You are now entering in a new world of writing!
5
What’s In
Activity 2. DISCOVER ME!
Read the essay and answer the comprehension questions that follow.
Do you know that tobacco kills up to half its
users? I'm pretty sure that you simply know
smoking harms your body. Then, why do people
continue smoking cigarettes? Maybe they are
doing it because they haven’t really become
aware of all the consequences of smoking. There are a few reasons why
smoking should be avoided. Smoking affects the smoker’s overall physical and
mental health, financial resources and endangers other people’s lives.
The primary reason why people shouldn’t smoke is that smoking
mainly affects one’s health. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), smoking is one of the most important public health threats that the
planet has ever faced, killing quite 8 million people around the world. Smoking
is that the leading explanation for death, illness, and impoverishment.
Though there are developments made in many countries in reducing smoking
prevalence, it still remains the main cause of unhealthiness and premature
death worldwide (Gowing et al., 2015). Maybe the physical effects of smoking
aren’t noticeable immediately, but surely smokers will be sorry at some point.
The second reason why smoking should be avoided is that it’s a waste
of money. Over 80% of the 1.3 billion tobacco users worldwide sleep in low-
6
and middle-income countries, where the burden of tobacco-related illness and
death is heaviest. Tobacco use contributes to poverty by diverting household
spending from basic needs like food and shelter to tobacco. Do you agree that
all the cash spent on cigarettes could have spent in something better or
reserve for the longer term?
The last reason is smoking doesn’t only harm the smoker but also put
others’ lives at risk. WHO stated that quite 7 million of these deaths are the
results of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the results of non-
smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
After reading this, I do hope that you will make a smart decision to stop
and not to try smoking. Think of how much you love yourself and others.
Think of your loved ones who wouldn’t want to see you suffer. Consider the
people around you, especially the young ones whose health will be in danger
once they are exposed to smoke.
Comprehension Questions:
1. What is the main idea of the essay?
2. Does the opening statement catch your attention? Why do you say so?
3. What is the topic of the first paragraph? Is it effective? Can it be improved?
If so, how could it be?
4. Does the second paragraph effectively prove the writer’s assertions? Why
do you say so?
5. Is the concluding paragraph sufficient? Are you convinced of what the
writer stated?

Look at the paragraph above and reflect while answering the following
questions below.
1. What do you observe in this paragraph? Does the writer clearly state the
thesis statement?
2. Are you convinced of what the writer stated? Why or why not?
3. What do we call a writing which main purpose is to persuade the readers?
Yes, you are right! We call it a Persuasive Essay but, what is a persuasive
essay?
A persuasive essay is similar to argumentative writing. Both use reason and
logic to show that your point is more reasonable than any other. Also, they
use reasonable and convincing facts to persuade readers.

How to Outline an Essay
1. Introduction- This is the first paragraph. The first sentence must be an
attention grabber. You can use the following techniques as a hook: unusual
detail, strong statement, quotation, story, anecdote, statistics, and rhetorical
question.
Do you know that tobacco kills up to half its users? I'm pretty sure that
you simply know smoking harms your body. Then, why do people continue
smoking cigarettes? Maybe they are doing it because they haven’t really
become aware of all the consequences of smoking. There are few reasons why
smoking should be avoided. Smoking affects the smoker’s overall physical and
mental health, financial resources and endangers other people’s lives.
The last sentence will be the thesis statement. This is a well-constructed
sentence that states your belief regarding the topic. This is what the rest of
your thoughts will prove.
Smoking affects the smoker’s overall physical and mental health,
financial resources, and relationship with other people.
2. Body- It consists of at least three paragraphs and each begins with one of your
supporting details. These will support the idea you put in your topic sentence. You
should use correct transitional devices (the underlined words below are examples)
for the smooth flow of your thoughts. To support your ideas, use definite facts or
examples. You can use the following techniques to support your argument: emotive
words, storytelling, expert opinion, facts, statistics, and tone.

Remember me!
Here are some tips on how to write an effective persuasive essay.
The Writing Process
Writing is a process that involves a minimum of four distinct steps:
prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing. It is known as a recursive
process. While you're revising, you would possibly need to return to the
prewriting step to develop and expand your ideas.
1. Prewriting
➢ Prewriting is anything you do before you write a draft of your
document. It includes thinking, taking notes, lecturing others,
brainstorming, outlining, and gathering information (e.g.,
interviewing people, researching within the library, and assessing
data)
➢ Although prewriting is that the first activity you engage in,
generating ideas is an activity that happens throughout the writing
process.
11
2. Drafting
➢ Drafting occurs once you put your ideas into sentences and
paragraphs. Here, you focus on supporting and explaining your ideas
fully. At this stage, don’t concentrate on such things as spelling.
➢ This draft tends to be writer-centered: it's you telling yourself what
you believed and recognized in the subject.
3. Revising
➢ Revision is that the key to effective documents. Here, you think and
delve deeper into your readers’ expectations and needs. This
becomes reader-centered. What proportion of support will each
idea get to convince your readers? Which terms should be defined
for these particular readers? Is your organization effective? Do
readers get to know A before they will understand B?
➢ At this stage, you may process your writing style, making each
sentence as accurate and concise as possible. Make connections
between ideas understandable and clear.
4. Editing
➢ Check for these things as spelling, mechanics, and grammar.
The last items you ought to do before printing your document is
to check the spelling of the words.
➢ Don’t begin editing until the opposite steps within the writing
process are complete.

Activity 3- Got it!
Direction: Use what you’ve learned from the discussion above. Read and
comprehend this online one-paragraph persuasive text. Does the text
convince you enough?
What Is It
The advantages of social networking websites have the potential to
outweigh the risks of such websites. While social networking does limit
real-life interaction with one’s peers, it also provides timid, reclusive, or
socially awkward youth with a replacement avenue of communication that
always makes it easier to attach or form relationships. The increase of
social networking sites may also increase cyberbullying activities. But,
sites like Facebook also give people the chance to generate a
bigger network of support. Moreover, while unguided teens and young
adults may post pictures and information that could damage their future
and make them less desirable to potential employers, responsible and well-
guided youth have the vision to create networking relationships and
make a stronger presence within the working world. Despite the fact
that there are great number of risks and downfalls related to social
networking, if the tool is employed correctly and also the youth are
instructed on its correct usage, it offers considerable advantages.
