Compose texts which include Multimodal Elements
Second Quarter, Module 7
I. Introduction
Rationale
Technology is now a big part of our daily lives. It introduces various methods on how
to inform, persuade and entertain us from the once simple means as radio & TV to more
complex ways as Internet Applications & Softwares. The rapid developments in technology
have revolutionized the information era. With these impressive and notable innovations,
relaying information becomes more dynamic and efficient. Decades ago, chalk and
blackboard are the powerful tool in teaching and learning until slide presentation was
introduced.
Using multimedia in learning plays a positive role in promoting activities and initiatives
of students. It makes learning more engaging and interactive; thus, a powerful tool to help
students maximize their potentials. With this, they can create materials to convey message
and information to a broader audience. It is important that students like you become adept
with how technology empowers your potentials and skills so you will become responsible
global citizen.
This is the reason why this module was made to provide you with fun and exciting
activities and discussion in order for you to:
1. characterize a multimodal text
2. express insights based on ideas presented in the materials viewed
3. identify multimodal elements used in given multimodal texts
4. assess the effectiveness of elements used in a given texts &

The infographic above is also an example of multimodal text. Let us find out more about
multimodal.
It is a combination of the prefix multi-meaning “many” and modal-an adjective
form of the “mode”. Mode means a way of things. Basically, multimodal pertains to use
of several different modes of activity. When the principle of multimodality is applied to
create text, it combines two or more communication modes such as written language,
spoken language, visual which can be in a form of still and moving images, audio,
gestural, and spatial to create meaning. These modes are also referred as semiotic
systems. Semiotic systems is the use of signs and symbols to convey meaning. There
are five semiotic systems. These are: linguistic, visual, audio, gestural and spatial
systems. The texts that you encounter today uses signs and symbols to communicate
information such as letters and words, drawings, pictures, videos, audio sounds, music,
facial gestures, and design of space. These elements when combined together to
create material or presentation either live, digital or print becomes multimodal text.
What are the Five Semiotic Systems?
1. Linguistic this includes:
a. Vocabulary- words to convey a message
b. Metaphor refers to technological figurative language such as
recycle bin, desktop, and window.
c. Structure-the organization of presentation
d. Various modes refers to auditory, print, video, graphics and
animation.
2. Visual includes the following:
a. Color used to express mood, emotion and cultural significance
b. Perspective it conveys depth and dimension
c. Vectors refers to directional lines and focus attention
d. Foreground is giving power by positioning.
e. Background means creating the setting or the scene.
6
3. Audio refers to the following:
a. Voice can be electronic, own voice, or natural speech.
b. Music may be selected or composed music
c. Sound Effects can also be selected or created sounds.
4. Gestural includes:
a. Behavioral refers to gestures
b. Senses use in creating atmosphere
c. Body Control refers to positioning and movement

What are the types of Multimodal Texts?
Multimodal texts can be delivered in various media or technologies. It can be live,
paper or digital electronic.
Examples of multimodal texts are:
1. A picture book. The textual and visual elements are arranged on
individual pages that contribute to an overall set of bound pages.
2. A webpage. The elements of sound effects, oral language, written
language, music and still moving images are combined.
3. A live ballet performance. The gesture, music, and space are the main

How to compose multimodal text?
Although multimodal texts combines two or more modes of communication and the
use of technology is a factor for quality production, creating multimodal texts do not
always use high technology. There are strategies that you can follow to compose and
design multi modal texts. These are the following:
1. Apply Visual Concepts
Understanding visual concept will help you create and design multimodal text.
These basic elements are:
a. Space. This give you the idea of how to balance text and images in your
output. Considering the space would allow you to identify position of text
and images for emphasis.
b. Color. Use color combination that are not invasive to the viewers or readers.
Use it to emphasize specific meaning and highlight ideas.
c. Shapes. Look for shapes that would be relevant and make sense so it
becomes an authentic part of the text.
d. Lines. Different types of lines when used in creating multimodal text, stress
a word or a phrase. It also creates divisions among the different parts of the
text or create visual patterns.
e. Font. Select font size and style that are easy to read. It added value to your
text and helps readers/viewers to perceive information from the text. The
use of font style and size establish mood or feeling among the readers. The
choice of such and other elements such as colors determines how the
content of your text is understood.
When these visual concepts are considered, it helps you identify what should
be prioritized in the eyes of your readers. This will establish repetition patterns
that will help them understand the relationship between and among the different
elements.
2. Know your purpose. In creating text with different features that add to the
meaning of the text, think of the purpose why it was created. It should convey
to the reader the aim of the text. Does it inform, entertain, or persuade?
3. Identify you audience. Considering the type of audience you are producing the
text for, gives an idea what specific language you will use. There certain type
of audience that require appropriate language for instance, children are
attracted for bigger fonts, different playful shapes and documents that are text-
heavy are avoided.
