B. DO: verb and auxiliary

The verb ‘DO’ and the auxiliary ‘DO’ are two different words.

The verb (to) DO (did, done, doing) means “faire”, it’s a verb like any other.

The auxiliary DO doesn’t have its own meaning, it’s only used in some
grammatical constructions. It has only three forms: do, does, did (+ negatives).

Like the other verbs (to) DO requires the use of the auxiliary DO in the
interrogative, negative forms etc..

• Look at the sentences with ‘do’. Circle the verb when it’s an auxiliary,
underline it when it’s a regular verb (a main verb).

Lucy did her homework. Lucy a fait ses devoirs.

Did Lucy do her homework? Lucy a-t-elle fait ses devoirs ?
Lucy didn't do her homework. Lucy n'a pas fait ses devoirs.
Lucy did do her homework. Lucy a vraiment fait ses devoirs.
Didn't Lucy do her homework? Lucy n'a-t-elle pas fait ses devoirs ?
