DEFINING BEAUTY
Complete the sentences below.
For me, beauty is…
For me, beauty is having a positive attitude rather than having a nice physical
appearance since you might look attractive and decent on the outside, however if your attitude
is unpleasant, your appearance is worthless. Beauty is a person's concern toward others. It is
the act of showing compassion, grace, and respect towards another individual, whether a friend
or a stranger. It is the happiness that emanates from a person's heart that influences their daily
activities. The beauty which arises by offering of oneself to others will shine through in your
eyes and on your face. True beauty can be seen to those who value and appreciate the beauty
of themselves and the others without looking on the physical attributes. Physical appearance
fades as we grow older, but our character stays no matter how old we get. Even the most
attractive individuals are insecure, especially if they believe their beauty is due solely to chance
or genetics. True beauty is defined by the type of person you are, the decisions you make, and
how you treat others.
A beautiful person is…
A beautiful person is someone who remains true to themselves and their soul, someone
who is self-assured and capable of making you giggle. These people have a sense of awe,
sensitivity, and knowledge of life that fills them with compassion, tenderness, and a profound
love for others around them. Beautiful person is someone who believes in themselves,
someone who value and respects their self as they value others. Beautiful individuals do not
appear out of nowhere, society has a big role about someone’s beauty. I feel that society places
a greater emphasis on a person's appearance than on their contributions to society. What
makes someone attractive is who they are and what they have on the inside. Kindness, honesty,
respect, confidence, generosity, optimism, and desire to help others in need are qualities that
beautiful individuals possess. Society degrades this ideal by dictating what is and is not
beautiful. How a person treats others, their composure, and how they give back to the
community are all things that should make them attractive. Overall, you are beautiful just the
way you are, regardless of what you look physically and how people sees you, as long as you
are not degrading others, you are beautiful in your own.
I am beautiful because…
I am beautiful because I believe in myself. I know and accept my flaws as it is what
makes me unique and I view it positively. Even if other people call me names and insults me for
what I look especially when talking about my complexion, I just laugh at them and embrace my
imperfections. Even though I have insecurities back when I was a little kid, as I grow up, I
learned to not be affected and show everyone that I am proud of myself because I know my
worth. I believe that we are all beautiful in our own way. I remember how this insecurities
pulled me down and I lost so many opportunities that’s why I am slowly building up my self-
esteem because confidence is essential, and when you have it, you can feel wonderful no
matter what outfit you're wearing. All you need is a healthy dose of self-assurance. Confidence
is the most important accessory you can have if you want to make a significant difference since
confidence is beautiful. Aside from accepting my God-given beauty and building confidence, I
trust that I am beautiful inside and that’s what matters the most. Having an almost perfect
appearance is nonsense if you have bad attitude because attitude comes first before beauty.
My parents raised me as a responsible and decent individual. They taught me how to respect
others and to be good to them at all times. I understand how to deal with life's
challenges, always joyful and carefree. I doesn't only overcomes life's challenges, but I also
motivate others to be optimistic. In conclusion, I am beautiful because I trust in myself, I am
slowly being confident, I know my worth, and I have a pure heart and beautiful soul.
Beautiful People I know
Mention names of people you know who are beautiful.
1. Rosalinda Villanueva
2. Adelina Villanueva and Rosita Idanan
3. Maricon Idanan
4. Ellen Villanueva
5. Airah Lene Salva, Shana Marie Hernandez and Angelu Maranan
6. Irish Yet, Rena Valeros, Maria Crizzel Candelaria, Marjorie Camo, Juna Marjalino,
Jonabelle Millares, Daisy Credo, Twinkle Rogacion, Gelly Aquino, and Angelica Dizon.
These people are the beautiful people I know from my 19 years of existence. The first
person, Rosalina Villanueva, is my mother. For me, no one is more beautiful than her for
she’s the best woman I know. She is the reason why I am existing and she is the first person
who loved and accepted me for who I am and what I could be. She is also the strongest and
softest woman I know, no matter what happens she will do anything just to assure our
safety even if it means risking her own health and that’s what makes her the most beautiful
person in my eyes. Next to my mother are my grandmothers, Adelina Villanueva and Rosita
Idanan. They are also two of the most beautiful people I know for they are the reason why
my parents are raised with a positive outlook in life. They taught my parents how to be a
good and responsible parents so we never suffered from hunger and we get adequate love
and support since we were born. They took good care of me and my siblings when my
parents are busy with work. I saw how much they will sacrifice for their loved ones. They
are courageous enough which makes them absolutely beautiful. Maricon Idanan, my cousin,
is beautiful the way she thinks and handle her problems. I saw her fight with her problems
courageously. She won’t let anyone degrade her at all costs. She’s so strong with a soft
heart and that made her beautiful. Of course, I see myself beautiful because of all people, I
should be the first one to believe in my own beauty. The rest of the girls are my friends, the
first three are my long time best friends while the others are my new found friends. I was
with them since high school and I saw how beautiful they are by the way they are a friend
to me who are always by my side to support me and help me in times of trouble. On the
other hand, I found my friends in college beautiful because in just a short period of time, I
saw that they are pure and thoughtful such as when I missed some important
announcement, they will inform me as soon as possible. Though all girls are beautiful in
their own unique way, these people are the most beautiful in my perception.
Assignment:
1. Define your self-image. What’s your internal voice saying?
Positive Mindset Matters Most
Our self-image is defined by how we perceive ourselves. It provides us with a feeling of
our individuality as well as enlightenment and knowledge about our lives. It is also about how
we see ourselves in relation to our surroundings. Self-image also influences the type of
individual we believe we are and what we assume others thought of us. The self-image involves
the way people see oneself. It is a collection of self-impressions which have accumulated over
time. These self-images may be highly optimistic, instilling confidence in one's thoughts and
deeds, or quite pessimistic, instilling doubt in one's skills and ideas. Your self-image is a mental
representation of oneself as a physical body and as an individual. Self-image also refers to how
you see your own strengths, shortcomings, and skills.
Being aware of your self-image is necessary to have a better life because you will know if
your actions won’t affect anyone negatively, and if it would, you will have the chance to change
that image into a positive one. According to Joyce Brothers, “A strong, positive self-image is the
best possible preparation for success.” I somehow use this to motivate me to have a positive
self-image as much as possible because anything that will ruin my reputation is a chance that I
would fail in life or it will take longer for me to reach success. I see myself as someone who is
responsible and decent. Like a student that will always pass all her requirements on or before
due time with proficiency and will always make herself look respectable. I also view myself as
someone who is strong and intelligent because people will take advantage of me if they notice
that I am weak and that may cause me to fail. I am also hard working and I always do my best at
all times because if I won’t, people will see me as a lazy person. Whenever I walk pass by the
mirror, I can see a beautiful and joyful individual. I always smile in mirrors especially when I
have problems and then I will feel a little better. I see myself beautiful because of all people, I
should be the first one to believe in my own beauty. I am such a jolly person as well, most of my
teachers and classmates remembers me for being such a happy student as I always laugh even
in serious moments like reporting or recitation. However, I am a shy individual and that hinders
me for achieving my full potential that’s why I am slowly building up my self-confidence. For me
to maintain this positive self-image I focus on positive thoughts, I encourage myself, forgive
myself, and treat myself with kindness.
My internal voice says “I will finish my studies”, this is one of my dreams ever since I was
in elementary school. I always motivate myself whenever I am losing hope and remember that I
have to focus on my goal. I wanted to finish my studies because that will open many
opportunities and lead me closer to my success. I want my parents to be happy and proud,
seeing them smile because of my success is priceless. Another is “I am strong”, because it
motivates me to keep going despite my problems. Lately, I had so many problems, personally
and academically that I deprived myself of sleep because there are so many things running into
my mind. It even came to my mind to just end my life but my internal voice always says that I
am strong and I won’t let any problem destroy my whole existence. That is why I am still
breathing and alive to reach my dreams. After that, it says that “I will be successful” especially
when I achieve something that will make me step closer to my dreams.
As an individual, I always make sure to stay positive despite all the circumstances in life
because how can I overcome these problems if negativity will take over me. I always assure to
maintain a positive image and take care of my reputation as it will surely help me to have a
peaceful yet happy life. All those voices coming inside me serves as motivations for me to never
give up and always dream high because I am strong, I am confident, I fear God and I am
beautiful.
2. Considering how you look now, is there anything you wish to change? Why or why not?
It’s not about Changing Your Looks, It’s
about Taking Care of Yourself
All of us are created equally by our almighty father. We should be proud and grateful of
whatever look he gave us because the fact that we were born and we have the opportunity to
experience life on earth is already a blessing. As an individual, I focus more on fixing my bad
attitudes and behavior rather than changing how I look because for me, attractiveness is having
a positive mindset rather than having a great physical features because you can seem pretty
and respectable on the outside but if you have an awful mentality, your looks will be nonsense.
On the other hand, people surrounding you would make you feel like you have
something to change in your appearance for you to be accepted by the society you live in. In my
experience, I have been insulted because of my teeth which are crooked, my weight and of
course my complexion. The thought of being judge by the people around me made me lose my
confidence back when I was a child. I suddenly had the urge to change every single part of my
appearance since I wanted to escape from the reality. I wanted to feel that people love me and
that I am beautiful. But as I grow up, I realized that it is not me who has a problem and that
there is nothing wrong with my physical self, it was them and I was just a victim of how cruel
the world is. I learned to accept myself because my parents taught me that acceptance is
important in all aspects of life. I realized that I have nothing to change in my appearance, if you
can’t accept me for who I am, then it’s your problem already not mine. I learned that we don’t
have to change, we just have to take good care of ourselves and everything will go in its place.
Having a good smell, being clean, brushing your hair, cutting your nails, brushing your teeth,
cleaning your toes and even your nose will make you absolutely beautiful. According to Mary
Lambert, “Body love is more than acceptance of self or the acceptance of the body. Body love is
about self-worth in general. It's more than our physical appearance.” She wants to imply that
we should accept and love our body for it is more than just a physical appearance, it is about
knowing our self-worth.
Let us be proud of how we look outside because we are all beautiful and unique in our
own way. We don’t have to change anything in our physical appearance but don’t feel bad if
you wish to alter something in your looks, if it will make you more confident then go, there’s
nothing wrong about that either. Always be healthy and neat because nothing is more beautiful
than a person who know her self-worth and is confident. Also, make up are not that important,
the best accessories you could wear is your smile. Always put a smile in your face, your enemies
hate it.
