What I Need to Know (Concept)

Similar fractions are fractions which have the same denominator.

Examples are , and so on.
To add or subtract similar fractions in simple and mixed forms
without regrouping, let’s learn and follow these steps.
ADDITION SUBTRACTION
𝟔 STEP 1 𝟐
+ = Add/ subtract the − =
8 8 ⬚ 8 8 ⬚
numerators.

𝟔 STEP 2 𝟐
+8=𝟖 Copy the common
−8=𝟖
8 8
denominator.
6 𝟑 𝟏

8 Simplify the resulting 8
(GCF -2) fraction, if possible. (GCF -2)

STEP 4
56+36 Add/ Subtract the 56 -36
whole numbers if the
𝟑 𝟏 given are mixed 𝟑 𝟏
(5+3) + (6 + 6 ) numbers with similar (5-3) + (6 - 6)
fraction parts.

2 𝟔÷𝟐 = 2 𝟑
(GCF -2) (GCF -2)

To add/ subtract similar fractions in simple and mixed forms

with regrouping, let’s learn and follow these steps.

Example 1:
𝟓  Borrow 1 from the whole number (3) and cut it into
3 =2𝟒 4ths, so you can now have
5 5
3 – 1 = 2 , 1= so, + = then it becomes 2

1 =1
𝟐 𝟏  Change to lowest terms: =
1𝟒 = 𝟏𝟐

5
 Since there is a whole in , change this to a mixed number.
Example 2: 1 +1 = 2 =3 5
Thus, = 1 so, 2 + 1 = 3 (So the answer is 3 )

Adding and Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions in Simple and Mixed Forms Without or With Regrouping
When we add or subtract dissimilar fractions, we change them into their equivalent fractions
using the least common denominator (LCD), and then, perform the operation.
The LCD of dissimilar fractions is the least common multiple of the denominator.

ADDITION STEP 1 SUBTRACTION

Find the least common denominator of the
fractions, then write the equivalent fractions using
this denominator.

STEP 2
Add/ Subtract the fractions.

STEP 3
Reduce the answer to the lowest terms, if possible.

To add and subtract dissimilar fractions in simple and mixed forms with
regrouping, let’s study and learn from the following examples.

Example 1: 1 =1 =  You can’t take away 4 from 3, so you need to borrow 1 from
𝟔
the whole number 1 and divide it into 6, hence, 1= 𝟔 .
𝟔 𝟑 𝟗
Add 𝟔 + 𝟔 = .
- = = 𝟔

 Subtract, then simplify if necessary.

Example 2: 1 =1 Example 3: 14 = 13

2 =2 -3 = 3

+1 =1 10

4 =4+1 =5
8
 Since is an improper fraction, simplify it  Regroup the whole number 14 to a mixed
5
8 5
by changing it to a mixed number, 5 =1 5 number, this becomes 135.
then and add this to the whole number 5,
 Subtract, then simplify if necessary.
and this becomes 5 5
