Definition of Terms for Basic Drawing Software
1. Basic Drawing Tools
a. Pencil Tool- the tool that draws free lines onto the picture b. Line Tool – used to create perfectly straight lines c. Paint Bucket – used to fill an area with solid color or pattern d. Square Tool- used to create perfect square or rectangular shapes. *By changing the line thickness in the line tool, you could change the thickness of the square Circle Tool – similar to the Square Tool, it is used to create perfect circles and the thickness can be changed using the line tool. 2. Selection and Erasing Tools Erasing Tool- these provide several different ways to erase various parts or all, of your drawing. Moving Truck- allows various parts of the image to be selected and moved around the canvass. There are different shapes and sizes that the selection can be, such as circles or rectangles. Dye Tool- used to pick out colors already used somewhere in thecanvass. 3. Insertion Text tool- includes rubber stamps of the letters of the alphabet which speak the name of the letter when selected. Typing Tool- includes basic abilities to add text to the image in different fonts and various sizes. Opacity- the degree to which something reduces the passage of light Undo- cancels, annuls, or reverses an action or its effect. The following are the different types of software widely used by creators of digital art. 1. Photo and Graphics editing Programs – used for drawing, painting,typing text, and retouching. Photographs can be edited and retouched by adjusting the lighting, vibrance, contrast and color balance. There are filters and effects that can be added to a photo. You also use this software to add text and other designs to a drawing or picture. 2. Vector graphic editors- allow to create and edit vector graphics. A vector graphic is a computer image made up of points, lines, corners, and shapes that can be digitally manipulated, rotated and proportionally scaled to produce a desired outcome. This type of editing software is more suitable and effective for creating topography, logo designs, and illustrations with sharp edges such as cartoons and clip art images. 3. Computer aided design (CAD) – is the use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a data base for manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for printing, machining, or other manufacturing operations. 4. Diagramming Software- is a computer program that is used to produce graphical diagrams. Among other uses, such diagrams are often used in software and technical development and business to represent dataflows,workflows, software architecture and organizational charts. 5. Deskstop publishing software- are used to create posters, flyers, brochures, magazines, newspapers and books. Graphic designers and production artists are the principal users of this type of software for laying out periodical publications, posters, and other print media. 6. 3D Software- are used to create three dimensional images usually for use in video games, animation, and videos or films requiring special visual effects. They are also used in architecture to create digital models of planned structures. For beginners and hobbyists there are many free software that have comparable features and capabilities. Open – source software or freeware – are software that can be seen over the internet and used free of charge a. GIMP- used for image retouching and editing b. Inkscape- an open source vector graphic editor c. Blender- used for creating animation, 3D and others Logos come in different types: 1. Personal Logos- Logos as personal images are used to brand possessions, achievements, or even one’s identity. Through logos, simple but strong declarations such as “This is me”, “I own that”, I made this seemed to be an ancient practice. For centuries, potters were inscribing their personal signs on jars vases and figurines they created. 2. Crests- are logos that are used to identify a family, country, or organization. Before only powerful and elite organizations or families could afford to make their own crests. Often, they want their crests very rich and detailed in decorations, such symbols, figures, or objects. most popular symbols in our visual environment today are logos and trademarks for various business. Logos for business gradually became so competitive that a company had to work on its image in order to survive. Each business aimed to have a logo that was not just more identifiable, visible, and recognizable, but that when seen would men a better company, product, or service BASIC STEPS IN CREATING A DIGITAL LOGO 1.Visualize and sketch ideas- No designer has ever been faulted for sketching too much. When ideas present themselves, sketch them immediately. When they do not present themselves, stop sketching and work on something else. 2. Scan to digitize or make the image appear on the computer screen- Scan the sketch to a flash drive as a digital image. To scan the image, you need a basic piece of equipment known as scanner. A scanner enables you to incorporate in your digital logos real world sketches and drawings that you have made. A scanner is an essential tool to all logo designers who need to alter and enhance their designs digitally. 3. Get started with image programs- Many drawing and image software programs are available to create digital logos. Some programs are downloadable or open source (Photo Illustrator, Inkscape) and can be learned easily. Main Tools and what they do: 1. Burn tool- This tool darkens an image. To use this tool, just drag it over the image 2. Crop tool- This tool changes the size of the image. To use, select the area tou want to crop and then press enter. 3. Dodge tool- The dodge tool lightens the image. To use, drag the icon over image you want to lighten. 4. Eraser tool-This can erase part of the image in a certain layer. To erase everything in a certain area, flatten the image or go through every layer to delete that part. 5. Hand tool- This tool moves around an image within an object. Use zoom tool when you want to adjust the section of picture you want to look at. 6. Lasso Tool- The lasso tool can select areas within a layer that cannot be reached with Marquee tool. 7. Marquee Tool- a group of tools that allows you to select rectangles, ellipses, circles, squares. 8. Move Tool- This tool moves around all objects within a layer. To move an entire image, flatten the layers by selecting all layers at the top of the window. 9. Paint Bucket Tool- This tool makes an area one color. To edit, all layers at one time, click all layers at the top of the window. 10. Pen Tool- The pen tool makes lines and can be used with shape tools to create different shapes. To create lines, use the pen tool to create anchors and change the shape of line by moving around the anchors. 11. Pencil Tool and Brush Tool – These tools draw or paint a line. Change the color of the paint brush by clicking on the color picker. 12. Sponge Tool- The sponge tool soaks color of the image. Drag the tool over the section of the image you want to change. 13. Type tool- It puts text in a picture. Click on the picture with the type tool and select a box the size of the area you want to add. 14. Gradient tool- Use this to highlight a color and make it fade from dark to light 15. Airbrush tool- Use this tool to create a soft spray and clouding effect. 16. Blur tool- Use this tool to soften sharp edges 17. Measure tool- Use this tool like a ruler 18. Rubber stamp tool- Use this to replicate the same pattern image.
