CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Academic writing is a complicated task for the reason that it requires

summarizing, quoting and paraphrasing existing or prior ideas of other authors.

Summarizing entails shortening the length of text and still retaining the main and

important points, quoting involves using a selection of another person’s words

precisely however paraphrasing is using an authors’ own words in order to

introduce the thoughts of other authors' without changing the meaning (Bailey,

2011).

Writing is a difficult skill (Maharani, 2018). Moreover, it is claimed that Thai

University educators are struggling in vocabulary, grammar, discourse

organization, citation, making reference classified as discursive challenges while

in non-discursive challenges are namely plagiarism, motivation, emotional and

psychological factors, and others (Phothongsunan, 2016).

Under the K to 12 Curriculum in Philippines, academic writing is a medium of

assessment mostly within academic courses of Senior High School. In which,

senior high school students are required to give write-ups of scientific inquiry

process, business concepts, draft experiments, marketing ideas, essay, project

plans, critique papers, livelihood projects and other summative assessments

(Paurillo, 2019).
However, academic writing has been a challenge for students. The issue of

plagiarism, spelling mistakes, readability, and grammatical errors is a major

problem not only during the traditional face-to-face setup but also in today’s online

class setting. Students have difficulties in all areas in writing academic essays. The

prevalent difficulty is variety of ideas, connectives, word usage and sentence

structure. On the other hand, evident use of first and second person pronouns is

common mistake of students when it comes to formality and objectivity and for

referencing is the lack of citations (Pablo & Lasaten, 2018).

One of the software tools that students use in assessing and evaluating their

academic writing is Grammarly. Grammarly is an online writing assistant that was

developed by Max Lytvyn, Alex Shevchenko, and Dmytro Lider in 2009 with the

goal of helping people communicate more effectively. It has a plagiarism

percentage or similarity index, and checks spelling mistakes, readability issues,

grammatical errors, and plagiarism problems (Lytvyn, 2021).

The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of using Grammarly

on the improvement of Grade 12 ICT students' academic writing skills in in Arellano

University Juan Sumulong Campus. Moreover, this research aims to provide for a

solution or suggestive measures that will cater the problem of students when it

comes to academic writing.

Since most of students are having difficulties when it comes on writing

essays, research paper, book report, reaction paper or other types of academic

writing, especially it requires sophisticated vocabulary. That is why, the

researchers led on making this very timely topic to assess whether the used of

Grammarly could improve the students' quality of writing.

Background of the Study

Students are required to formally communicate and share their ideas either

orally but more often, in writing as a part of assessment. However, academic

writing is different from other types of writing because it should be structured,

formal, precise, and objective. These includes essays, research paper or thesis,

reports and so on (Smith, 2021).

Emerging technologies are advancing at a rapid pace which also led to the

creation of Artificial Technology (AI). Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines

to imitate human intelligence. In which, computer or computer-controlled robot

have the skill to do tasks like an intelligent being. Specific applications of AI include

expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine

vision (Burns, Laskowski & Tucci 2021).

One of the software tools run by Artificial Intelligence (AI) is Grammarly an

online writing instrument that can detect grammatical, spelling, and punctuation

mistakes also plagiarism issues. It is an online proofreader that students, non-

native speakers and even professionals make use of (Dambrauskaite, 2021).

Grammar Checking is under Artificial Intelligence in the field of Natural

Language Processing in Computing. The first grammar checkers began in the

1970s namely Writer’s Workbench’s grammar modules, it was a set of writing tools

included with Unix systems. The first automated spell checker shipped with an
early version of WordPerfect in 1983, and the first computerized grammar

checkers soon followed in both WordPerfect and Microsoft Word (Roos, 2017).

Grammar checkers were mainly aimed at K-12 and postsecondary education

by the late 1990s along with the products namely ETS’s Criterion, Pearson Writer,

and Measurement Incorporated’s Project Essay Grade (Perelman, 2016).

At present day, there are ten of available for purchase or integrated into the

software as plugins such as grammar checker software such as Reverso, Ginger

Software, WhiteSmoke, and LanguageTool. Grammarly was chosen being

perceived by the institution as the leading grammar checker application under the

list of software. It is a web application that automatically detects issues in text and

suggest possible corrections for errors. It also has a plagiarism checker for

premium accounts. Grammarly was patented last 2015 (Hoover, Lytvyn, &

Shevchenko, 2015).

Theoretical Framework

Andragogy Theory

The Andragogy Theory by American educator Malcolm S. Knowles states

that adults learn differently from kids. It was introduced in the year 1980, when he

was trying to teach young adults in vocational skills and observe that there was a

particular difference in educating between adults and children. Knowles asserts

that the key aspect of learning is self-directed instead of managed by others.

Moreover, the learner come close to increase self-directedness, and the teacher’s
role is to encourage this increasing self-directedness. Increasing source for

learning is due to the learner's experience (What is Adult Learning Theory?, 2021).

According to the theory of Knowles it is where learners are self-directed and

wide experiences of an adult can be a source of knowledge, the learner is at a

certain point in life where he/she is set to learn, adult learning is problem-centered,

also the adult is internally motivated. In addition, Knowles proposed a series of

assumptions about the characteristics of adult learner namely: self-concept, adult

learning experience, readiness to learn, and orientation to learning and motivation

to learn at the same time he suggested 4 principles that are applied to adult

learning. Moreover, he gave an example of applying andragogy principles to the

design of personal computer training which states that things must be explain why

it needs to be taught, instruction should not be memorization but task oriented also

learning materials or activities must permit for different levels of previous

experience with computers. Furthermore, since it is self-directed students should

be allowed to gain knowledge by themselves at the same time guidance and help

from other people must be offered when mistakes are made (Pappas, 2013).

Regarding language instructions, specifically in teaching the second

language where the use of technology have a great influence in education. Due to

the ready availability of Information and Technology (ICT) enabled tools it is

possible for learners to take responsibility for choosing the learning goal,

determining the learning strategies and monitoring the learning progress. This idea

of self-directed learning in the IT learning environment is included with the use of

online writing assistant as well. This environment is where students can learn the
process of writing, but with the presence of writing application and it promotes self-

directed learning where the students will be the independent learners and teachers

will become facilitators. For instance, when the students are using the software

tool, ‘Grammarly,’ their task is to remedy their grammatical, spelling and

punctuations errors as well as plagiarism issues through the guide and feedback

from the Grammarly application to which they have to respond onto their essays

and research papers. Once the errors are underlined and marked in the system,

this is where the learning begins. When students read the explanation presented

in the comments, they learn why such mistakes occurred and other alternatives

could be used to replace the errors. They can do this in own pace and even in

different locations. Since online writing assistant can be accessed anywhere, even

at home, they can revise and read more about aspects of writing. Only when the

explanation is difficult to understand, the learners could then ask teachers who act

as facilitators and guides over their learning of writing.

Digital tools that are powered by technology can support students to be a

self-directed learner. It can enhance the creation of knowledge at the same time

develop new competencies (Scardamalia & Bereiter, 2015). For instance, an

individual who wants to learn how to write a good essay because of being inspired

by other people. The learner starts to seek information on Google to learn how to

compose an essay. Then, use Grammarly in order to help him or her proofread or

check the task. That person consumes a lot of time practicing on writing and

working with the use of Grammarly and download it which may help with the
learning process as well. As an ongoing process, the self-directed learner is

constantly evaluating her own learning.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter thematically illustrates numerous publications and reviews

related to research topic. This also present the synthesis of the art, theoretical and

conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done.

Local Literature

Academic writing is a formal style of writing and usually used as a medium of

assessment in graduate studies. It requires one’s ability to think critically and

convey complex ideas in an organized, logical and concise way. It has four main

types and each of them have specific language features and purposes namely

descriptive, persuasive, analytical and critical (Tumapon, 2019).

Based on results of the British Council’s International English Language

Testing System (IELTS), Filipinos are having difficulties in writing test. Specifically,

in cohesion or the organization of one’s idea and coherence which deals with

consistency of ideas that makes sense as a whole (Juego, 2018).

Local Study

Grammarly helps in enhancing writing skills and respondent's confidence

level in writing. Based on the findings, most of respondents admit that Grammarly

software is usable. However, there are still weaknesses of this software that needs

advancement however the highlight features of Grammarly such as grammar,

spelling, and punctuation checker are highly useful in improving the quality of

written outputs (Ventayen & Orlanda-Ventayen, 2018).

In reducing the occurrence of grammatical errors by 40 percent, it was twice

measured by Grammarly software. The result shows that when it comes in

measuring grammatical errors Grammarly is an effective tool. Also, there is a

significant relationship between the occurrence of grammatical score and

plagiarism. Moreover, the use of plagiarism and grammar software in helping

teachers assist the students in reducing errors and increasing quality of academic

writing (Japos, 2013).

Foreign Literature

Grammarly is an online writing tool that has various features used for

checking spelling and punctuation mistakes, readability issues, grammatical

errors, and plagiarism problems also it enhances vocabulary usage, and suggests

citations (Karishma, 2021).

Lexical difficulties, grammar and punctuation, text structure as well as

plagiarism are some academic writing problems faced by students nowadays.

("Academic Writing Problems Faced by Today's Students", 2016).

Advancement in technology led to the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

which plays a vital role in education nowadays. Grammarly, is one of a software

that is run by AI and performs various tasks such as machine translation, sentiment

analysis, essay scoring, as well as writing enhancement (Grammarly, 2019).

Foreign Study

The work of students that are evaluated using Grammarly have a positive

contribution in reducing errors made by the students in terms of language use,

vocabulary use, and mechanics. Overall, those works of students that were

evaluated by Grammarly have better EFL writing skill since the software can help

them to minimize the mistakes they made. However, it is less effective to improve

the content and organization of students’ EFL writing and some are not skillful

enough in using Grammarly software accurately (Ghufron & Rosyida, 2018).

Students find Grammarly useful as well as easy to use also it improved their

writing and understanding of grammar rules. Findings suggest that students can

benefit from Grammarly's individual instruction and the self-access nature of the

tool (Cavaleri and Dianati, 2016).

Digital tool that are powered by technology can support students to be a self-

directed learner. It can enhance the creation of knowledge at the same time

develop new competencies (Scardamalia & Bereiter, 2015).

This study indicates that 88.6% of respondents are utilizing for writing a

research paper, 53% of respondents are using it for writing reports and 45.5% of

users using Grammarly for mailing purpose. Furthermore, the software is being

used for writing dissertations, theses, books, blog and presentations. Also, it

reveals the advantage of using Grammarly particularly in improving the writing skill,

catch contextual spelling and grammar mistakes, integrate with Microsoft Office.
Most respondents who participated in the study revealed that they would like to

recommend Grammarly for others. (Rao, Gain & Bhat, 2019).

The use of Grammarly as the teaching tool was very helpful. Based on the

result of the study, in 40 students there are 32 or 82% of students this shows that

students passed the passing mark when the software is utilized in teaching

descriptive Moreover, it is an appropriate tool to minimize errors and improve

students’ writing quality (Karyuatry, Rizqan & Darayani, 2018).

Chapter III

METHOD AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the method and procedure used from the research

design, research method, respondents or key informants, sampling technique,

research instrument and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

The correlational research design and descriptive are the design that the

researchers used in this research. Correlational measures relationship between

two or more variables. The purpose of correlational research is to investigate the

existence of a relationship or associations between variables without implying

causation (Bhandari, 2021). Descriptive is a type of research known for describing

the characteristics, correlations, trends, categories and frequencies. The goal of

this is to systematically and accurately describe a situation, phenomenon or

population and answer the focuses on answering the where, when, what, and how

questions (McCombes, 2019).

Since the goal of this research is to know the impact of using Grammarly on

the improvement of academic writing skills of ICT students, this research design is

appropriate because it allows the researchers to study the relationship between

Grammarly and academic writing skills and accurately describes the two. It is to

measure and find out if there is a relationship exists between the Grammarly

application and academic writing skills of ICT students and answer accurately the

questions how and what.

The researchers applied the correlational and descriptive research design

through identifying the two variables which is Grammarly, the dependent while

academic writing skills as an independent variable and describing the existence of

relationship between the two. Moreover, this type of research design is suitable for

the main purpose of this study which is to find out if there is a significant

relationship between the Grammarly and academic writing skills of ICT students

and describing those.

Research Method

Survey method is under the correlational research design define as a method

of collecting information by asking questions. It involves the use of questionnaires

or interviews that measures peoples’ thoughts, behaviors, preferences, or factual

information. The purpose of this is to gather large amount of data without

consuming a long period of time (Ponto, 2015).

The researchers chose survey method in their study because it is convenient

enough for them to use since they need to collect a huge amount of data in a short

period of time. Additionally, it is a flexible method to gather information for the

reason that it can be distributed to various social media platforms easily and fast.

It is also cheap due to the fact that it is given online so using of papers are not

needed that makes it cost-efficient.

Survey method was used in this research by means of utilizing online

questionnaires. Wherein, there are set of statements that the researchers made

about the impact of Grammarly on enhancing the academic writing skills of ICT
students that are needed to be answered. The researchers used a scale

particularly designed for the research and the responses of the respondents that

will be gathered will serve as an overall view of informants.

Respondents

The researchers chose the fifty (50) Grade 12 Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) students from Arellano University Juan

Sumulong Campus to be the respondents or key informants of this research.

They are preferred by the researchers because the researchers are also ICT

majors and it is convenient enough for them to be their subject of investigation.

Since the ICT strand has a core subject that give written tasks and there are

students who are struggling in writing academic papers. This gave an idea to the

researchers to conduct a study regarding the impact of using Grammarly on the

improvement of ICT students’ academic writing skills.

Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling is the type of non-probability sampling also called as

judgmental sampling in which the researcher selects the respondents based on a

particular characteristic that fit the purpose of a study. It is also referred as

selecting of participant to suit a specific intention (Crossman, 2019).

The goal of purposive sampling is to focus on people with a specific quality

who will better be able to assist with the relevant research. It is the deliberate

choice of a subject because the qualities he or she possesses (Etikan, 2016).

The researchers used purposive sampling to get right of entry to a specific

subset of people, as all participants of a survey are picked due to the fact that they

fit in selected profile of the study. Also, this method requires researchers to have

advantages in choosing eligible respondents and it will be easier to generalized

the data due to possible answer from participant will be appropriate in connection

with the study.

The researchers applied purposive sampling technique in a total of 50

respondents from Grade 12 ICT students in Arellano University Juan Sumulong

Campus. The 50 students were intentionally picked as a key informant since they

have prior knowledge regarding the Grammarly application and its uses for writing

scholarly papers.

Research Instrument

The researchers chose online survey as research instrument. It is an

organized questionnaire that the respondents will answer over the internet by filling

out the questions. Likert scale in the online survey form was used by researchers.

It is a rating scale that measures intensity of opinions by different degrees (Bose,

2020). The purpose of online survey is to collect data in actual time and at little to

no cost through a digital platform (Sutherland, 2019).

The researchers first made the survey questionnaires in relation to the

statement of the problem. After that is the checking of survey paper by the research

adviser. Next, the researchers created a validation letter for the checking of

grammar and accuracy of the contents to be checked by subject teacher. Then,

the researchers transferred the survey questionnaires to an online survey software

known as Google Forms.

The researchers selected those Grade 12 ICT students who are using the

Grammarly as respondents. The survey form was distributed through a messaging

application. The researchers equally disseminate the task among themselves and

give the survey form to the respondents. At last, researchers gathered the data

from database of the google forms that they created.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers began collecting data that are necessary for the study. The

information that they need to gather are the following: how often do the Grade 12

ICT students use Grammarly in terms of proofreading and plagiarism checking,

how did the Grade 12 ICT students improve the academic writing skills in terms of

making essay and research paper also what is the impact of Grammarly in the

improvement of academic writing skills of Grade 12 ICT students. The timeframe

of distributing the online survey questionnaires started on November 15, 2021 until

November 20, 2021. The researchers tasked themselves and equally divided to

each of them the number of respondents they need that they need to give the

online survey. Then, researchers waited the respondents up until November 21,

2021 and all responses are recorded via phone and laptop, and their answers will

serve as the foundation of the findings of this study.

Survey method is the research method used in this study. It is conducted

online by means of Google Forms. The researchers used online survey

questionnaire as the research method because it is a flexible way to gather

information for the reason that it can be disseminate to fast and easy by online

platforms. Respondents virtually answered the survey questionnaires given by the

researchers since there are still restrictions due to the pandemic. Therefore, the

most preferable way in conducting the data gathering procedure is through online.

Treatment of Data

Mean is pertained as an average; it is the total of all values in a set of data.

This can be computed through adding all the values and then dividing the number

of data there is. However, it can be easily affected by little or extreme values in

data set (Rumsey, n.d.).

For the analysis of data, the Pearson’s correlational coefficient was used.

This measures the relationship between two continuous variables. It can be

assessed through scatter plot and two variables should have linearity to be

calculated for the coefficient. The bigger its strength of association also the nearer

the resemblance towards the scatter plot’s straight line. Pearson correlation

coefficient is ranging from +1 to -1 wherein +1 represents positive relationship

between the variables, -1 indicates negative relationship while 0 signifies no

relationship. This also gives the direction of the relationship of variables and shows

correlation rather than causation (Kenton, 2021).
