The Importance of The 5-External Environment in The Professional Practice of Architecture.

This document discusses the importance of external environments in the professional practice of architecture. It identifies five key external environments: politico-legal, socio-cultural, economic, technological, and ecological. The politico-legal environment involves complying with laws and regulations when designing buildings. The socio-cultural environment helps architects determine cultural elements to incorporate into designs. The economic environment affects how buildings are designed to be economically efficient. The technological environment allows more efficient design through technologies like CAD and BIM. Finally, the ecological environment requires architects to design buildings with minimal environmental impact. All five external environments are important for sustainable, effective, and efficient architectural design.

“The importance of the 5-external environment in the professional

practice of Architecture.”

In simple definition, Profession is an occupation, work, or job at which someone

have a specialized education training. This someone who works in a profession is called
a “professional”. According to the 2012 Philippine Standard Occupation Classification or
PSOC, Professionals are one of the major group of workers in the country. They are
workers who increase the existing stock of knowledge, apply scientific or artistic
concepts and theories, teach about the foregoing in a systematic manner or engage in
any combination of these activities. There are a lot of profession in the world but in this
essay, I will focus only on the profession of Architecture and the importance of its
external environment which affects the practice of this profession.

One of the external environments that affects the professional practice of

Architecture, specifically here in the Philippines is the Politico Legal environment. In this
external environment, Architects or Designers needs to comply with the laws and
legislations, or rules and regulations when designing a building or structure which is set
by the government. These laws or rules are made to ensure the safety and well-being of
the people. Therefore, if the Architect or Designer complied with all the laws or rules
and regulations, his or her design will be effective.

Socio-cultural environment is another external environment affecting the practice

of Architecture. This environment consists of social system and culture of a certain
place which helps the Architects or designers to determine the intangible element that
may affect behavior, relationship, the perceptions and ways of life and the presence of a
person in the society. These data will be incorporated by the Architect to the design
which will represent the cultural identity of that certain place and also helps to the
formation of architectural spaces.
Economic environment is another external environment that deals with the
management of wealth and natural resources. This environment really affects the
profession of Architecture. If the architect is aware on how the economy works,
specifically in connection with Architecture, he or she can design buildings or structures
which is economically efficient or cost-effective with a high design criterion and a large
habitable value.

Another external environment is the technological environment. This pertains to

the product and utility of a place or a country which is basically from the innovation of
science and technology. One of the importance of this environment is that it helps the
Architects and Designers to manage their time and design efficiently. For example,
advanced technology such as BIM, CAD and 3d printing helps Architects to create their
design in a short period of time compared to manual drafting and designing which really
takes a lot of time to complete. Aside from that, there is a lot of new building
technologies and materials that helps to build more complex, durable, and timely
designs, also lessen the construction time of the building.

The last external environment we have is the Ecological environment. Ecological

environment deals with the relationship of an organism to its existing environment. As
an Architect, you should design a building that will have a less impact on the natural
environment. Considering the natural and existing environment of a site is very
important because this can help the design to be more sustainable.

In conclusion, all of these five external environments are really important in the
professional practice of Architecture because of their contribution in the making of a
sustainable, effective and efficient design.
