When it comes to
studying, is there any chance that the learner's academic excellence will be affected by their
sleep? Is there really a relationship between sleep deprivation and academic excellence? Those
are just some of the few questions that the researchers seek to determine and understand. With
that, they came up with this study to identify the correlation of sleep deprivation and academic
performance. The researchers are aware that it is not easy to measure one's sleep deprivation
state. However, this study will help the researchers grasp the knowledge that they want to attain
and widen their norms about the said topic. This study will also provide answers to the questions
that the researchers could not answer. Nowadays, the learners are in the midst of online learning
and because of that, their situation is quite more difficult and complex than before, not just the
learners, but also the teachers as well. This research will be a stepping stone for the researchers
and especially to the learners when it comes to their sleep deprivation state and academic
excellence.
Sleep is imperative for the wellbeing of children no matter the age, including adolescents. We
are all aware that sleep is an inseparable part of human life, and that it is essential for learning, as
well as physical and mental health. Teenagers should sleep about nine to 10 hours, however,
modern teenagers are getting less and less sleep despite the proven link between lack of sleep
and poor academic excellence.
According to Philstar (2021), Filipino students that range from 15–18 years old do not have
enough sleep because they only sleep 4-6 hours at night. Since the COVID in March 2020,
34.5% were found to be sleeping at 3 a.m. or later. Additionally, they also found out that 32.7%
of students sleep from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. and others will sleep from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.
According to the Healthy Living Index Survey (2016), Filipinos have one of the highest rates of
sleep deprivation in Asia, with 46 percent not getting enough sleep and 32 percent sleeping for
less than six hours.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (2017), 70% of high school students do
not get enough sleep; teens should sleep 8-10 hours per night.
Sleep deprivation can affect a large number of students. Illnesses like the flu, colds, or tonsillitis,
which cause students to be unable to sleep due to excessive coughing and sneezing, are common
causes. This could be due to poor sleep hygiene. People's habits, such as drinking coffee, can
wake up their nervous systems. Additionally, stress may be a contributing factor in their inability
to sleep early. Because of their problems, they intended to overthink and cry.
Moreover, sleep deprivation could lead to poorer performance of a student. It could lessen the
alertness and reduced concentration in their class. They are not going to be active in their
physical activities because they can’t react fast. They can’t judge quickly and it reduces their
aware in the environment
Past studies have found that most of any campus library during exam season and you’ll most
likely find students prepped to stay up all night glued to their books. At least one library or study
hall stays open on campus 24/7, accommodating scores of students who stay up all night to cram
in revision for upcoming exams. Most students probably know that depriving themselves from
sleep is bad, but nonetheless they’re willing to sacrifice sleep (Segaren, 2018).
That's why in this research, the researchers want to fill this gap on why students prefer to
sacrifice sleep than organizing proper sleep schedule in order to avoid sleep deprivation and its
effects.
Another study showed that 34.5 percent of teenagers sleep at 3 a.m. or later while 32.7% others
sleep between 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sadly, 85.5% of respondents said that their sleeping habits were
not healthy during the pandemic and only 14.5% said they maintain a healthy sleeping pattern
(Cordero, 2020).
It is for this reason that the researchers want to determine which are the reasons why students are
stuck in this loop including the reasons why certain students reach that high level of sleep
deprivation including its effects in their academic performance.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on the academic
performance of grade 11 students of Magalang Christian Ecumenical School Incorporated. The
researchers also want to teach and educate students on how to create a proper sleep schedule to
avoid sleep deprivation and its negative effects on academic performance. With this study, the
researchers can learn how sleep deprivation affects students' ability to focus and learn in class. In
addition, not getting enough sleep can lead to obesity and poor mental health. Sleep deprivation
can cause an inability to concentrate, poor grades, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal
thoughts.
Based on the previous researchers’ findings, they learned that there is a link between sleep
deprivation and health problems. Most of the students having insufficient sleep had experienced
difficulty when it comes in learning or when trying to attain some information which will then
lead to poor academic excellence. Therefore, understanding the underlying factors that causes of
sleep deprivation will provide a solution. Obtaining the knowledge about consequences of sleep
deprivation, will help people, especially the teenagers, to change their daily lifestyle in order to
prioritize having adequate sleep in their daily life.
