Every day that I observed, there was at least one point during the day that she had to get
the children to calm down and refocus. On some specific days, it would be very difficult for the
students to stay focused and she would have to constantly repeat instructions and such. I could
see that she would get frustrated as she had to tell the students, “We need to move forward, we
During the teacher interview, my cooperating teacher explained to me the many struggles
with the school district that she dealt with while becoming a teacher. She explained how she felt
like she didn’t receive sufficient training on making lesson plans while in school and so when
she became a teacher, she had little to no idea how to properly create a lesson plan. Another
struggle she had was finding a school to stay at when she first became a teacher because of the
strict rules the district had. She had taught in another state for her second year of teaching so
when she came back to Nevada, she had a hard time finding a job again because the district saw
that year in another state as a “gap” in her teaching. Overall, the district does not honor years
taught in other states. She mentioned how another teacher at Hinman went through the same
struggle when she moved here from California. That teacher had 20 year of experience in

California but when she came to Nevada, the district did not honor her previous teaching
experience. So, the district saw her as a first year teacher and treated and paid her as that.
Another struggle of teaching I noticed while observing is keeping up to date materials for
the students. The teacher stated how she has to provide dry erase markers for the students as well
as other things. She also has to create things such as reading worksheets for centers that keep the
As mentioned before, there are many struggles of teaching that I noticed during these 10
hours that I did not fully acknowledge before. But one positive thing I noticed during these 10
hours was how much I love working with children! Although it may be difficult sometimes to
keep everyone focused, it is so enjoyable when I get to see kids learn new things and get excited
when they get a question right or finally understand a concept. It is very fulfilling to know that
you are someone important in these children’s lives and that you are a role model for them. I
believe I would do very well at the kindergarten grade level as well. This is their first official
year in school and so they are very eager to learn and get excited when they learn something
new.
Overall, these 10 hours have taught me that I would probably love being a teacher and
working with kids all day but I would get frustrated as well at the amount of time you have to put
in the profession while not getting a lot of compensation for your hard work. By this I mean a
generally low salary in comparison all the schooling that’s required to become an elementary
school teacher.
