My time at the not-for-profit organisation, Big Yellow Umbrella, was spent developing lesson plans
for community service programs surrounding topics such as wellbeing, mindfulness, healthy habits,
respectful relationships, self-care, study skills, etc. What surprised me about this setting was the fact
that these lesson plans had not been developed. The funding for this kind of organisation must be
spent wisely and therefore, the organisation did not have the capacity to use any other lesson plans
other than free resources found online. Now that I have spent my 30 hours developing these plans
for them, they are able to now have a portfolio of plans and resources that are unique and their
own. They do some amazing things in the community and I was honoured to be able to assist in
helping them develop these programs further. Some other assistance for people in need that the
organisation offers includes, food hampers, food vouchers, supported playgroups, holiday craft
activities, transition to parenting support group, Youth and Family Case Management, and many
more. Before I commenced, my research told me about certain demographics that require
assistance from the organisation, but after commencing and after seeing the struggles of the recent
floods in the area, it was all hands on deck and it was people from all walks of life that required
assistance. As well as families and individuals needing assistance if in isolation or if they have lost
their employment due to the pandemic. This made me reflect on my experience in schools, where
students home life or situations are sometimes not as they seem and it is imperative to pay attention
to detail for all students and their differences or needs. My placement here also gave me insight into
programs/organisations in the area that I could refer any students or families to that are in need.

The goals that I set for this placement included further developing my lesson planning skills and
learning the skills to be able to adapt and write lesson plans out of my Key Learning Area; gaining
better insight into community programs that could benefit any of my students that I encounter so I
can refer them to appropriate programs; and I wished for my interpersonal skills to develop further
and for my network to grow. Through this, I believe I have met standard 3.1 Establish challenging
learning goals, and therefore have had the opportunity to explore and develop these skills during my
30 hours at Big Yellow Umbrella. I have been able to meet standard 2.2 Content selection and
organisation, by selecting different topics to prioritise for the lesson plans I created as well as
organising them in a clear, concise manner for the staff to use and understand into the future. It was
important for me to adapt the lesson plans and organise them in a way that non-teaching staff could
understand as well as being able to action the activities in a non-school setting. Differentiating
certain tasks was also imperative, as the children the organisation works with come from diverse
backgrounds and have a wide range of abilities, therefore prioritising standards 1.3 and 1.5.
I was able to bring to the setting my knowledge of my KLA (TAS- Food Tech) to develop a series of
lesson plans and resources surrounding healthy eating habits. My knowledge for the content in this
area assisted me in this, meeting standard 2, Know the content and how to teach it.
Finally, 6.3 Engage with colleagues and improve practice, was simple to do at this organisation
where all staff were able to give great insight into sharing their role and what they wished to see
from me, as well as me giving insights from my teaching experience. Our ability to bounce ideas off
of each other, sharing insights from each others expertise proved successful and from this I was able
to produce effective content while connecting with staff and broadening my network. 7.2
Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening
teachers professional knowledge and practice, was ultimately met at this setting and am therefore
grateful for my positive experience at Big Yellow Umbrella.
