LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ___________________________

Learning Objective:

Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system. S7ES-IVa-1

Subtasks:

1. Identify the lines in the coordinate system;

2. Describe the location of places using longitude and latitude; and
3. Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system.

Time Allotment: 4 hours

Key Concepts

 A Coordinate system is a way of locating points by labelling them with a number

called coordinates.
 Latitude is the imaginary lines on a map or globe that measures distance in
degrees of north or south of the equator. Latitude lines extend horizontally, from
east to west on a Globe.
 Longitude is the imaginary lines on a map or globe that measures distance in
degrees from east to west of the prime meridian. Longitude lines extend vertically,
from pole to pole on a Globe.
 The equator is the imaginary line circling the Earth halfway between north and
south poles.
 Prime meridian is the great circle on the Earth’s surface passing through the
north and south poles, which is considered 0-degree longitude. It passes through
Greenwich, England. It is used as a reference point for measuring longitude east
and west.
 Names of the five lines of latitude are:

Latitude Name
00 Equator
23.50 N Tropic of Cancer
23.50 S Tropic of Capricorn
66.50 N Arctic Circle
66.50 S Antarctic Circle

Reflection:

Places on Earth may be located using a coordinate system in terms of its latitude and
longitude. Coordinate system is a way of locating points by labelling them with number called
coordinates.

Directions: Write an essay, telling or describing about how this coordinate system will
help you to locate places on Earth. Use the rubric below as your reference.
