LESSON 1
Fundamental Movement of Folk Dance

INTRODUCTION
Folkdance is a cultural art form handed down from generation to generations. It
communicates in the customs, belief, rituals and occupations of the people of a region or
country. Folk dancing belongs to the people. It emanates from them. Ethnic tribes have
their specific tribal art forms originated and danced by the people of the tribe.

In the field of dance, especially in folkdance, there are certain fundamental


knowledge and skills considered important proficiency and efficiency in bodily
movements.

There are five fundamentals of basic positions in dance that are commonly
termed as 1st position, second position, 3rd position, 4th position and 5th position of the
feet and arms.

FUNDAMENTAL POSITION OF THE FEET AND ARMS

Play the music (4/4) slowly. Count one, two, three, four to a measure in this particular
exercise.
I. FEET
From first position point R (L) in second position………………………………….ct. 1

(ct.2). From the fist position slowly open the arms to second position on counts

7. Point the R (L) foot in fourth in front (ct. 3). Bring the R (L) foot
in front (ct.4). Raise the L (R) arm high in fifth position (the other remains in second

8. Point the R (L) foot in fourth in front (ct. 5), lower the R (L) heel down (ct.6). Bend
the R (L) arm in front at waist level to be in fourth position on counts………… cts
