Module 1
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions
Discovering & Exploring
The seven major art forms in the Philippines are painting, sculpture, architecture, poetry,
music, literature and dance. Painting is a type of fine art that utilizes pigmented colors by applying them
to canvas, paper, or any other flat surface with or without a paintbrush. Oil, acrylics, watercolors, or
pastels may also be used. Fine artists have been known to employ anything from chapel ceilings, glass
windows, dumpster-dived couches, to old closet doors as painting surfaces. Sculpture is a visual art
defined by the artists shaping, molding, and forming, shapes, and figures. The freedom of sculpture is
the varied materials that can be used to do this such as stone, wire, metal, bronze, ivory, wood, plastic,
clay, and other unique mediums to create structures and forms. Architecture is the study and the
design, planning, and construction of buildings. Poetry is a form of literary writing which utilizes rhythm
or freeform styles in the expression of thoughts and feelings. Poetry can be written about anything from
the social to the political, romantic, and natural. Music the purpose of music is to vocalize or use
instruments to express feelings, thoughts, and harmony. The universal language of music underpins many
world cultures and is a source of historical narrative storytelling. Literature is comprised of the written word
and associated with a collection of written work. It does not denote anything specific in its most barebones
definition, only that the work be a written work respectively. Dance th e performance fine art form of dance
is the use of the body for expression of thought and emotion, with or without music. Dance is often pre-
choreographed, rhythmic, sequential, and cultural.
Gaining Insights
Contemporary art, to be put simply, is art of today. From a painting to a sculpture and
from photography to a performance, it can be anything as long as it is produced in today’s era. With no
specific medium or apparatus, Contemporary Art has been interpreted differently in different times and
different regions. This genre of art is believed to have started in the late 1960s by the end of modernism
art era. Contemporary artists have been the pioneers in introducing new forms of art to the world.
Different art forms have been combined or newer ideas employed to bring out newer types of art.
Another characteristic that was employed to bring about modern art was the employment of different
objects, materials that looked useless to the common man but were brought to great use by modern
artists. For instance, painters used pieces of newspapers as a backdrop to their canvases and created
masterpieces of modern art from it. Traditionally, color was used as means to bring reality to paintings
and art pieces. However, modern artists experimented with colors and used it unconventionally to make
new textures and themes and used them in their pieces of art.Expressionism was mostly based on the
vibrant and expressive use of colors as a tool to innovate their paintings.

Enriching the Mind
Painting emerged in prehistory, when nomadic people made use of paintings on rocky walls. They made
drawings with charcoal leaving marks in the caves where they passed. Recent discovery made in Spain
found that the oldest paintings discovered to date, made by humans, were made more than 42,000 years
ago.painting, the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a
two-dimensional visual language. The elements of this language its shapes, lines, colors, tones, and
textures are used in various ways to produce sensations of volume, space, movement, and light on a flat
surface.
First archeological proof of dance comes from the 9 thousand year old cave paintings in India. One
of the earliest uses of structured dance was introduced in religious ceremonies that told the stories
of ancient myths and gods. Egyptian priests used this kind of visual storytelling in their rituals.
Dancers are not just performing artists; their bodies are also the instruments through which the art
is created. The quality of this art, therefore, necessarily depends on the physical qualities and skills
that dancers possess. The stronger and more flexible a dancer’s body, the more capable it is of a
wide range of movement. Nearly all professional dancers start training at a young age in order to
shape and develop their bodies correctly. Strength is built up in the right muscles, for example, and
the bone-connecting ligaments on which flexibility of the joints is so dependent are lengthened early
before they begin to harden.
The movie industry as we know it today originated in the early 19 th century through a series of
technological developments: the creation of photography, the discovery of the illusion of motion by
combining individual still images, and the study of human and animal locomotion. The qualities of
intensity, intimacy, and ubiquity have been singled out as the salient characteristics of the motion-
picture image. Its intensity derives from its power to hold the complete attention of the spectator
on whatever bit of reality is being shown.
