Narrative Report
The role of the teacher during a pandemic is extremely important. Like a doctor to his
patient, which he should not neglect. It’s terrifying to fight what we don’t see, but
teachers need to join forces for the sake of so many learners.
It is such an honor to be part of the implementation of what we call as the “new normal”
for this gives an opportunity not only to us volunteer teachers but most importantly to the
young learners. I believe that education plays a vital role to all of us that despite the
hardship we are facing we still choose to continue.
March 2021, Mr. Gian Carlo Cano the EducSupport program field officer of Children
International Bicol, Inc., called us for an orientation about their Educational program.
There I discovered that many young learners are illiterate and their parents don’t know
how to teach their children the modules because they themselves doesn’t know how. On
the same month, we had an orientation at the DepEd Region V discussing the
implementing guidelines on the project community based teaching assistants and
education volunteers, After that I scheduled a short orientation for the parents of
identified learners and informed them about the goal of this program, their part as well as
the venue and of course reminded them the health protocols. On March 26, I started
tutoring, handling grades 2,3, and 4. Upon observing I could see their happiness that after
a long while there is someone who’ll reach out and bring them on track again.
I can say that March is a very good start for me, somehow, I found out of the strength and
weaknesses of my learners and that led me to where will I should focus.
In April 2021, I reinforced reading using marungko approach in English to my two
learners that finds hard reading. And based on their ABC+ assessment one of them is a
full refresher which is currently in grade III and the other one is light refresher on the
same grade level. I always advice my learners to bring only the modules they find hard
answering so that we can minimize our time and they will have better understanding.
In May, I continue doing the same methods where in I conduct intervention reading in
English and Filipino, Then helping learners understand their modules. I also find ways to
make learning fun and interesting so that they will be more motivated. In terms of
attendance, the attendance for this month is inconsistent, to resolve the problem I visited
the house of my learners and talked sincerely to their parents and ask for cooperation, I
also explained to them that this is a great help for their children and they are very lucky
to have this kind of support.
And in June, I am surprised because most of my learners answered some of the module
independently. They are more responsible, more eager to learn despite the current
situation. I can’t deny that they still needs more to learn but I am happy to say that I can
see a little progress, little by little.
