Jayzil O. Ehidio ED200 Commentary No. 1

The document discusses three issues with the philosophy of education: 1) It does not adequately cover local education systems and contexts. 2) It is difficult to find new philosophers of education because universities prioritize economic and job-related subjects. 3) The role of philosophy of education is unclear in a modern, skills-focused education system.

Commentary No. 1

One issue is the scope of philosophy of education. Because it only covers the global
perspective of education. It does not cover the local concept of the ideas or
framework of education. And if you apply these global perspectives of the philosophy
of education, for example, in the Philippines, it is not enough to apply these
philosophies of education from the other countries since we have a different setting
of education system here in the Philippines. It is harder to practice the global
perspective of philosophy of education in a local setting of education because it lacks
some angles on the philosophy of education. And that is one of the issues happening
in Australia, as stated in the article. Even if they have their own philosophy of
education, they usually apply the globalized philosophy of education in their country
which is too vague and it does not usually fit to their own educational system.

Second issue stated in the article is difficulty in finding new philosophers of

education because most of the universities, now adays, are economic driven. Most
universities offer courses and subjects that will develop the skills of the students.
That is the reason why the philosophy related subjects which focuses on theories are
being neglected. And so, universities only see the philosophy of education as a
luxury, not a necessity. And right now, many veteran philosophers retire and they are
having a hard time to pass it to the younger generation because mostly of the
students are not interested in philosophy related subjects.

Third issue is the role of philosophy of education in the modern world. Since now
adays, schools focus more on the skills of the students, so the question here is what
is now the purpose of philosophy of education in moving forward? I think one
proposition is to connect it to the future by using these theories of philosophy of
education to prepare the students on what will happen in the future, and to prepare
them to become critical thinkers. And in order for these theories to flourish,
especially in skill-based schools, it should also be integrated in the practical subjects
or topics so that these theories will not only remain as theories but it should be
applied in subjects like research and other practical stuff. As students acquire new
learnings every day, these learnings will shape their minds and will use those
concepts and theories to help them absorb all new learnings they will acquire.
