CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
Introduction
The study will examine the effects of academic stress and pressure on Senior High
School students’ academic performance in facing new challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previous studies have demonstrated that parental pressure on students, academic stress, and other
personal problems affects student mental health which result to the learner’s performance
plummeting.
The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of stress and stressors, on
Senior High School students’ academic performance during the pandemic. Stress and pressure
work correlatively as a weighted anchor on students academic performance brought about by
declining mental health . If the student feels all the stress and pressure from their parents, the
weight of responsibility, and others, their mental health may tend to decrease the productivity
and focus in their studies.
Furthermore, this study sought to answer what are the main causes of academic stress and
pressure. And, how each greatly affect a student’s learning capabilities and performances.
This chapter describes the research methodology, which covers research design, data
collection, and analysis. Methods of data collecting, demographic and sample processes, data
analysis, presentation, and interpretation validity, dependability, and ethical considerations of all
factors to consider.
Research Design
Phenomenological design will be used under qualitative approach wherein the researchers
will have 6 respondents through proportional and snowballing sampling and use the experiences
of the respondents in presenting the gathered information.
This study aims to utilize the descriptive design wherein using the descriptive-
correlational method. This method is used in order to determine if there is a significant
relationship between the academic pressure and stress and academic performance of students
in Senior High School. It is both descriptive and correlational for Descriptive research is a kind
of research designed to give information, a textual information about the topic, variables and the
rest. And Correlational in a way for it is used to discover relationships among different variables
and to allow the prediction of future events from present knowledge which is the Perceived
Stress and Academic Performance as the variables and its result will be the prediction of the
aftereffect it gives to the student or respondents that predicts his or her future events.
It is a descriptive correlational study designed to examine the relationship between
perceived stress and academic performance. This study was a retrospective chat review of
students of Moreno Integrated School Senior High School from their First semester
experience of academic stress and its impact to their academic performance in facing
new challenges. The aim of this study was to examine the level of academic stress that the
students are experiencing in terms of: Relationship Aspect; Academic Aspect; Financial
Aspect; Emotional Indicators; and Personal Habits using the questionnaires prepared.
Also to depict the significant relationship between stressors and effects of stress on students.
And to know if there is a significant relationship between the effects of stress on students and
their academic performance. All of it to be examined through prepared questionnaires.
Research Instrument
This refers to the questionnaire or data gathering tool to be constructed, validated
and administered (Creswell, 2012). For efficient and reliable data collection, questionnaires were
used to convene the required data for the study. It aims to draw out the appropriate
answers or responses to the purposes or objectives. A survey questionnaire will be given to the
respondents with questions regarding the chosen topic of the researchers, which is the effects of
academic stress on Senior High School students in facing new challenges. The parts of the
survey questionnaire will be the following:
• Part I: The problems encountered by the students during the new learning system.
• Part II: The major stressors faced by the students in a normal basis.
• Part III: The observable effects of stress and pressure in the respondent’s: academic
performance, mental health, physical health, behavioral and cognitive aspect.
The researchers will make use of the following research tools for gathering data: the
research design questionnaire. This is were the given data is provided to the respondents in a set
of questions.
Locale Of The Study
The respondents of the study are only bonafide Moreno Integrated School Senior High
School Grade 12 Students, in which only 10, Grade 12 senior students will be selected to
participate in the survey for this study. The respondents will come from each Grade 12 strands.
In Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS), two (2) respondents will be selected; from General
Academic Strand (GAS) three (3) respondents will be chosen; (3) three respondents of
Accounting, Business and Management (ABM); and two (2) will be from the Technical
Vocational Livelihood (TVL). The respondents from each academic strand will be selected
randomly.
Interpretation of Data
This section indicates how the data will be analyzed and reported; it should
specify the qualitative and/or quantitative methods that will be used in analyzing the data
gathered for the research. After Data Collection, the researchers will assess the survey questions
on the effect of Academic Pressure on Senior High School students in facing new challenges by
cross tabulating and filtering the results based on the research questions. With the decided
sample of 10, the researchers will be using the statistical tools such as; frequency
distribution, weighted mean, graphs, and tables.
Data Gathering Procedure
The finalized questionnaire will be distributed among the respondents. Prior to the
administration of the survey, the researchers will secure permission fro the school directly to
allow them to conduct survey among Senior High School students. The respective adviser of the
class will also be informed regarding the survey and the retrieval of the questionnaire to and
from the respondents. The researchers will explain the purpose of the survey and will discuss the
content on the instrument After the questionnaires had been complied the researchers
will collect them to ensure one hundred percent retrieval. Each questionnaire will be checked, the
response and rating will be collated and subjected with the appropriate statistical tools to
obtain the result of the study. The results will be tabulated in excel and subjected
for statistical treatment.
