GEE 007 – Indigenous Creative Crafts
The Philippines is made up of over 7,640 islands, each of which is
home to more than 500 Indigenous people groups and tribes. GEC 007 -
Indigenous Creative Crafts aims to help us understand the indigenous
culture and traditions of many tribes in our country, so that we may help
dispel misconceptions and myths about Indigenous people that stem from
misunderstandings that perpetuate disadvantage and prejudice. As
TIPians, we can learn a lot from the Indigenous cultures of the tribes that
have been discussed previously. All throughout the 6 weeks of this course,
there are many learnings about the tribe of T’boli, Manobo, Mandaya,
Subanun, Tiruray, Bagobo, Bontok, Kalinga, Ifugao, Isneg, Ibaloi,
Tingguian, Batak, Mangyan, Tagbanua, and Badjao.
For me, these given weeks have given me the opportunity to gain the
knowledge that at first was not that rich, but now that as I took up this
course, I was be able to identify the traditional culture, traditions and history
of different indigenous tribes here in our country, the Philippines. I also
learned about the current situation of these indigenous people. Some of
them have been forced to abandon their homelands due to a variety of
difficulties, forcing them to relocate to other cities, including Manila, where
they must adjust to a new way of life. I was able to know the origins, the
traditional crafts from various communities demonstrating how people
actually live, as well as their history and traditions. Handicraft in all of its
manifestations has long been strong within Philippine history. Various
Philippine tribes have their intrinsic desire to create, illustrating the
condition of being immersed in their creative crafts and taking delight and
confidence in what they do. The artisans, every Philippine tribe, devote
themselves to their trade and to conveying the narrative of the Philippines,
exposing the country's genuine essence—its soul or its meaning—to the
entire world. With these abundant natural resources and materials,
these artisans coming from different tribes, are able to create great
crafts that convey a thousand stories about, not only their life, but also the
culture of their homeland. Since the Philippines is recognized for its
abundant natural resources, Filipinos are noted for their creativity in
handicrafts, which aid in their sustenance. Carved woods, woven cloths,
baskets, mats, and many more products that can be done by weaving, and
ceramics are examples of handicrafts. They make use of several natural
resources accessible in their surroundings, such as abaca, seashells,
rattan, palm, and especially bamboo that is very abundant to every island in
the Philippines, for their living and to create items that would help them
profit. Handicrafts ranging from baskets to huge furnishings are common in
the houses of Filipino tribes. Philippines is not only rich in various
indigenous creative crafts, but also rich in traditional culture and beliefs.
According to past discussion, as I summarized, most of the tribes have
their own beliefs in supernatural things around them, and they have their
own terms for their supreme beings.
As a TIPian, my learnings from this course help to attain two of the
TIP graduate attributes. Wherein I attained the Social and Ethical
Responsibility, in a way that I gained and nourished my beliefs and values
about various tribes, especially knowing and understanding their culture
and traditions. By these learning of mine, I accept that I should be careful in
identifying people without understanding and knowledge about their culture,
since I am responsible for my thoughts and actions that could may affect
people around me if I will not be careful and responsible socially and
ethically. Next is the Lifelong Learnings, The lessons of this course that
taught me, especially I am an architecture student, that in the near future I
will have clients that comes from every part of the world and I should first
know how to interact with every people while understanding how to interact
with them and approach them so that I will avoid some disrespectful acts
that may offend them. This is the reason why knowing first the things that
will respect the people around us, especially their traditions and beliefs, will
further avoid division and imbalance in our society.
