Physical Science

This document contains lessons and activities about physical science topics including collision theory, catalysts, energy sources, and the active and additive ingredients in cleaning product labels. It discusses how catalysts lower activation energy to speed up reactions, and how increasing concentration and temperature increases reaction rate by allowing more frequent and energetic collisions. It also describes renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and the effects of geothermal energy extraction. Finally, it identifies common active ingredients in cleaning products and their functions, and additive ingredients and their purposes.

Week 5-6
Lesson 1: Collision Theory & Catalyst

Activity 1
1. C
2. D
3. E
4. B
5. A

1. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, without being

consumed by the reaction. It increases the reaction rate by lowering the
activation energy for a reaction.
2. If you increase the concentration of a reactant, there will be more of the
chemical present. More reactant particles moving together allow more
collisions to happen and so the reaction rate is increased. The higher the
concentration of reactants, the faster the rate of reaction will be.
3. Increasing the temperature a reaction takes places at increases the rate of
reaction. At higher temperatures, particles can collide more often and with
more energy, which makes the reaction take place more quickly.
Week 7-8

Lesson 1: Energy Sources

Activity 1

Activity 2
Energy Source How energy is harnessed?
1. Fossil fuels Buried organic matter produces coal, oil, and natural
gas
2. Biogas Animal manure produces methane which generates
heat and electricity
3. Geothermal Heat from the earth produces steam and generate
electricity
4. Hydrothermal Heat from seawater evaporates, drives turbines and
generate electricity
5. Solar Elemental silicon converts sunlight into electricity
6. Batteries Device that store and convert chemical energy into
electricity
7. Biomass Organic matter are burnt generate

Activity 3
1. Industries that depends on fossil fuels will be greatly affected. Besides
when energy market fails, an energy shortage develops. Industries will be
forced to stop its operation and this will have a dramatic impact on the
global economy. In order to prevent this crisis, energy transition to
renewable energy sources is one alternative solution like solar energy,
hydropower, wind, geothermal energy and biomass energy. Unlike fossil
fuels, these energy sources are totally renewable and do not emit
greenhouse gases.
2. The effect of geothermal resource in the community includes the changes
in land use associated with exploration and plant construction, noise and
sight pollution, the discharge of water and gases, the production of foul
odors and soil subsidence.
3. Mountainous regions of Benguet and some areas in Mindanao are good
locations for hydroelectric power plants because the place is abundant
with rivers and falls. The best location for a hydroelectric station should be
along the path of a river or near a falls. This enables the collection of the
water become easier. If the hydroelectric station aims to store maximum
water on the dam, the volume of the basin located way above the dam
should be calculated to ensure that the dam does not suffer from the
problems of insufficient water supply.
