THE CHALLENGE

The Accounting Challenge is a series of competitive activities designed to challenge


accountancy students’ intellectual abilities and critical thinking skills. It serves true to the
purpose of congregating ideas and methods of different young business leaders all over the
country on the maximization and of the value of the accounting profession and its
convergence to our day-to-day activities

ALL ABOUT
THE CHALLENGE
Composed of three different competitions, namely a business case competition,
quiz bee, and a virtual escape room, this year’s Accounting Challenge goes beyond
assessing the skills and abilities of the future Filipino CPA in accounting. The contests are
designed to ultimately test the different facets of intelligence, which are all required for a
Filipino CPA to be called competent in the fourth industrial revolution.

01 Business Case Competition

The Business Case Competition tests the contestants’ skills and abilities in the
different strategic areas of business by subjecting them to different scenarios
that would require them to apply the concepts they have learned throughout
their undergraduate program.

02 Quiz Bee

The Quiz Bee will allow the contestants to go face-to-face against other CPA
hopefuls in the six different board subjects covered by the Board Licensure
Examination for Certified Public Accountants (BLECPA).

03 Virtual Escape Room

The Virtual Escape Room is the new addition to the Accounting Challenge,
which brings a whole new type of competitive environment. Through this event,
the skills and abilities of the participants in solving problems through clues and
hints, while being time-pressured, would ultimately be tested.

COMPETITION
Through the business case competition, the contestants will be given a first-hand
experience of what it is like in the workplace. This program will expose them to different
business scenarios that will challenge their capabilities of being a future CPA by applying
the multitude of concepts they have learned throughout their undergraduate program.

01 General Qualifications

1. Each team shall be composed of THREE (3) students. The teams are required to include
at least two (2) members that are currently taking Accountancy or any accounting-
related programs (Accounting Technology, Management Accounting, and the like).
2. Each team can be a mix of first to fifth year college students.
3. All contestants shall be enrolled in the same university.
4. Each member is only allowed to participate and be a part of one (1) team.
5. There shall be no limit on the number of teams to be sent by each participating
university.
6. The same team can join the other competitions under the Accounting Challenge.
7. Failure to comply with the aforementioned eligibility rules will result in immediate
disqualification.

The team members’ CGPA is converted to a percentage by using their university’s


transmutation table. The average of the lower and upper limits of the transmutation table will
be the converted percentage value. If the applicant’s CGPA is within the two grade points, the
higher grade point will be considered.

3. Only the TOP 10 teams based on their ratings will be moving forward to the semi-finals
round. The scores given by the board of judges will be considered irrevocable and final.

03 Competition Guidelines: Semi-finals

1. The semi-finals round will consist of the presentation of the insights and evaluation of
the group from the case provided in the application round via Zoom.
2. The teams are expected to prepare a PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, or any other media of
presentation, containing the information they think would be material to their pitch.
3. There is no limit imposed on the number of slides expected from the teams.
4. The way of presenting, alongside with its flow and contents, would solely depend upon
the teams.
5. The order of the presentation will be random and will only be announced on the day of
the event. During the presentation, only the presenting team are allowed in the Main
Zoom, the rest will be in their respective breakout rooms.
6. The teams will be given a total of 30 MINUTES to present the contents of their
presentation, inclusive of a 10 MINUTE question and answer portion.
7. The teams will be assessed using the following criteria:

8. Only the TOP 5 teams will be advancing to the final round. The scores given by the
board of judges will be considered irrevocable and final.

04 Competition Guidelines: Finals

1. Scores earned from the previous round are reverted back to zero.
2. The teams will be provided with a new business case to study and evaluate.
3. The teams are given exactly THREE (3) HOURS to draft their case proposal and prepare
their presentations in their respective breakout rooms.
4. Upon entering the breakout rooms, all members of the team are required to turn on their
cameras and unmute their microphone. The team breakout room shall serve as the
team’s mode of communication and any member of the team may share his/her screen.

5. In writing their case proposal, the following outline should be followed by the teams:

a. Industry Analysis
In this section, the teams will investigate and evaluate the external environment of the
company in focus, taking advantage of tools and frameworks such as, but not limited to
PESTLE and EFE matrix.
b. Company Analysis
In this section, the teams will focus on the internal factors that affect the company’s
business operations, specifically on its strategic business units such as finance, human
resources, and the like, taking advantage of tools and frameworks such as, but not
limited to IFE matrix and VRIO framework.
c. Strategy Analysis
Rooting from the evaluation of both the internal and external environment of the
company in focus, the teams will now dwell on the analysis of the strategies
implemented by the company—specifically highlighting the appropriateness and
effectiveness of the strategy implemented based on the insights derived from part (a)
and (b). The teams can make use of tools and frameworks such as the I/E matrix,
SWOT-TOWS analysis, and the like.
d. Alternative Courses of Action
Knowing fully the situation of the company in focus, the teams are expected to draw up
at least three courses of action on how to mitigate the problems posed by the case, if
applicable. Each course of action should be well-justified and explained, taking into
account its feasibility, effectiveness, and creativity.
e. Implementation Plan
The teams should be able to choose one final course of action for the company in
focus, which would be the strategy/step to be done by the company moving forward.
This shall be accompanied by a detailed implementation plan, which would include
details such as the dates of expected completion, company departments involved,
projection of financial performance, and any other information deemed necessary to
justify the plan’s effectiveness.

6. The teams could add additional parts not mentioned, provided it would supplement the
understandability and overall impact of their proposal.
7. The following are the formatting guidelines for the proposal:
A. Paper Size: 8.5” x 11”
B. Font Face: Arial
C. Font Size: 11
D. Line Spacing: 1.5pt.
E. Paragraph Alignment: Justified
F. Length of Written Report: Maximum of 20 pages, excluding the references, and
appendices (if applicable).
G. Each page shall have the team name in ALL BOLD CAPITAL LETTERS centered
in the header. Each page shall also contain a page number in the lower right of
the page.
H. Citations: APA Format
8. Any team who will not be able to follow the necessary outline and format for the
proposal would receive an automatic five-point demerit to their final score.
9. The names of the team members, along with their university, shall not be seen in any
part of the report. Not following this guideline would subject the team to a five-point
demerit to their final score.
10. After the allotted time of three hours, teams should submit their proposal to the given
submission box link. The link will be given on the day of the contest. Failure to submit on
time will automatically result in elimination.
11. Each team should also prepare a presentation in the form of, but not limited to,
PowerPoint, Keynote, or PDF, containing the pertinent information they have written in
the proposal.
12. The teams will be given a total of 15 MINUTES to present the contents of their
presentation, inclusive of a question and answer portion.
13. There is no limit imposed on the number of slides expected from the teams.
14. The way of presenting, alongside with its flow and contents, would solely depend upon
the teams.
15. The order of the presentation will be random and will only be announced on the day of
the event.

16. The teams will be judged separately for their proposal and presentation, using the

17. The scores for the proposal and the presentation shall be averaged to get the teams’
score for the final rank. This will be the basis for purposes of determining the winners.

The quiz bee is part of the series of competitive activities under the Accounting
Challenge of EXCEED2021, designed to challenge the participants’ skills and abilities in
accounting, covering the six subjects included in the Board Licensure Examinations for
Certified Public Accountants (BLECPA) in the Philippines, namely:

• Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)

01 General Qualifications

1. Each team shall be composed of THREE (3) students currently enrolled and taking BS
Accountancy and other Accounting-related programs (Accounting Technology,
Management Accounting, and the like) during the term or semester they join EXCEED.
2. All contestants should be in their third, senior, or penultimate year.
3. All contestants shall be enrolled in the same university.
4. There shall be no limit on the number of teams to be sent by each participating
university.
5. The same team can join the other competitions under the Accounting Challenge.
6. Failure to comply with the aforementioned eligibility rules will result in immediate
disqualification.

QUIZ BEE
02 General Mechanics

1. Contestants are expected to be present at the Zoom Conference meeting at least 15


minutes prior to the scheduled start. The participants are also expected to have a stable
internet connection. Late comers would still be allowed to participate up until the end of
the Round 1 but no adjustments will be made on their scores.
2. Participants must use the zoom function “hide non-video participants” to prevent any
problem in missing out the main screen.
3. Participants must change their Zoom name to this format: GroupName_Surname (e.g.,
Hello_Dela Cruz).
4. The contestants may only use a basic calculator during the entirety of the quiz bee.
Other devices such as, but not limited to scientific calculators, mobile phones, tablets,
and laptops may not be used for computation purposes.
5. The board of judges shall have the exclusive authority to answer any inquiry the
contestants may have. Any decision made by the board of judges shall be deemed final
and irrevocable.
6. Any protests/disputes about a question must be directed towards the board of judges
after the answer is revealed or before the next question is asked. This can be done
through the use of Zoom’s raise hand function. Any clarification about previous
questions shall not be entertained.
7. Participants should observe proper decorum during the contest proper. Everyone except
the quizmasters’ mic should be on mute.
8. Any group caught cheating through using prohibited devices, accessing search engines,
exchanging answers, or contacting people outside of the group during the competition
will be automatically disqualified.
9. All the materials in the event are deemed confidential and thus, participants are strictly
prohibited to copy, photograph, or screenshot any of the questions or other materials
throughout the quiz bee proper. Participants who are found guilty of violating this
provision will also be disqualified
10. Failure to follow any of the aforementioned and to be discussed rules and regulations
shall merit a warning for the subjected group. Two warnings shall automatically
constitute disqualification.
11. The EXCEED2021 Quiz Bee team leaders and assistant team leaders, along with the
board of judges, are in-charge of implementing these rules and regulations.

03 Contest Mechanics

The quiz bee consists of three rounds in total, which are as follows:
1. Written Online Examination
2. Oral Semi-finals
3. Knockouts

Written Online Examination


1. The first round of the quiz bee, the written online examination, will be done through an
online platform (Canvas) wherein the participants shall take a quiz individually and will
not be allowed to communicate with his/her groupmates.
2. The examination will make use of the following table of specifications and pointing

3. Participants will only be given 30 MINUTES to answer all the questions. All other
instructions specific in answering the questions will be provided in the questionnaire
itself (e.g. decimal places, abbreviations).
4. The scores of the participants will be averaged per team, and the top five (5) teams who
will get the highest average score will receive a power-up of their choice, which is listed
below:
A. TIE-UP - The chooser should pick another team. The latter shall have the same
answer as the former, right or wrong notwithstanding.
B. DOUBLE-WHAMMY - The chooser, if answered correctly, shall be awarded twice
the points.
C. CHEAT - The chooser shall pick another team who they wish to copy an answer
from. The rule for scoring shall be governed.
D. FREEZE - The chooser shall be the only one allowed to answer the question.
E. STUN - The chooser shall choose another team who they wish not to answer for
the question.
F. SLOW-MO - The chooser shall be given an extra 30 seconds to answer the
question in spite of its difficulty.
G. FRENZY - The chooser shall be allowed to give more than one answer to the
question.
5. In the event of a tie, the following rules will apply:
A. The team with the higher top individual score will be receiving the power-up.
B. If the top individual scores are the same, the next top individual score will be
compared. The same rule shall apply.
C. If the aforementioned rules do not break the tie, a tie breaker question shall be
given to the teams, to be answered by group. The first team who would be able
to give the correct answer shall advance.
D. In case of a deadlock, there shall be continuous giving of questions until the tie
is broken.
6. Scores shall be released to the participants, alongside with their ranks for full
transparency.
7. There shall be no teams eliminated from this round.

Oral Semi-finals
1. All scores from the written examination shall be reverted back to zero.
2. The subsequent rounds and the rest of the quiz bee will be done via Zoom.
3. In this stage, the teams will work as a group to answer the question. Each group will
choose one representative who will be responsible for sending the group’s answer to an
assigned officer. The representative shall rename him/herself using the following
convention: GroupName_Rep. Any answer coming from non-representatives will not be
entertained. Groups will also be assigned to a designated receiver to whom they will
send their answers privately. This will be announced during the quiz bee proper.
4. The questions for this round will be seen through the shared screen on Zoom, while
being simultaneously read by the quizmaster.
5. The questions will only be shown once the quizmaster says the word “Flip”. This
consequently shall also mark the start of reading the question.
6. The contestants shall only be allowed to send answers to their assigned officer after the
quizmaster says the word “Go”. Any answer sent before the word “Go” shall be
considered incorrect.
7. Once the time allotted for the question has elapsed, an officer shall send a line (--------) in
the Chat Box, marking the end of the time. Any answer sent after that line shall be
considered incorrect.

9. The following table shall govern the time allotted for each question:

10. For the teams with power-up, they shall expressly say their intention to use the power-up
before the question is read. Once validated by an officer, the power-up shall be
automatically enforced in the next question.
11. In the event that a power-up was left unused, it will not be carried forward to the next
round, if the team qualifies for it.
12. The top three (3) teams with the highest scores shall be awarded a power-up of their
choice to be used in the final round. The following are the power-ups they can choose:
A. Strike - The team will choose a target to receive one Strike. This power-up may
not be used if the targeted team is one strike away from getting eliminated.
B. Immune - The team will be able to block a Strike even if they fail to get the
correct answer. However, the power-up will still be consumed in case they
answer the question correctly.
C. Double Answer - The team will be given a chance to submit two (2) answers for
the specific round.
13. In the event of a tie, the following rules will apply:
A. A tie breaker question shall be given to the teams, to be answered by group. The
first team who would be able to give the correct answer shall advance.
B. In case of a deadlock, there shall be continuous giving of questions until the tie
is broken.
14. Only the top five (5) teams with the highest scores shall proceed to the next round.

Knockouts
1. All scores from the preceding rounds shall be reverted back to zero.
2. The teams will continue working as a group for this round.
3. The questions for this round will be seen through the shared screen on Zoom, while
being simultaneously read by the quizmaster.
4. The questions will only be shown once the quizmaster says the word “Flip”. This
consequently shall also mark the start of reading the question.
5. The contestants shall only be allowed to send answers to their assigned officer after the
quizmaster says the word “Go”. Any answer sent before the word “Go” shall be
considered incorrect.
6. Once the time allotted for the question has elapsed, an officer shall send a line (--------) in
the Chat Box, marking the end of the time. Any answer sent after that line shall be
considered incorrect.

9. In this round, instead of giving points to the teams who will answer the question
correctly, the teams with incorrect answers will receive a “Strike”.
10. Their final ranking in the quiz bee will be determined by the number of “Strikes” the team
receives. The first team who will receive five (5) strikes will automatically be considered
as the 4th runner-up, followed by the second team who will receive five (5) strikes being
the 3rd runner-up, and so on.
11. The round will continue until there is a team hailed as Champions.
12. In the event that:
A. There are teams who will accumulate five (5) strikes simultaneously, with their
current standing being other than the 1st runner-up or the champion, their final
rank from the previous round (Oral Semi-finals) will determine their rank for this
round.
B. All teams accumulated five (5) strikes simultaneously, and there are still
questions left for the round, the round shall continue as is, with the first team
giving the incorrect answer getting the lowest ranking.
C. All teams accumulated five (5) strikes simultaneously, and there are no more
questions left for the round, there shall be a clincher round to determine the final
rankings. The following shall be the rules and regulations of the clincher round:
i. The questions to be asked in this round are randomly-picked; hence, the
difficulty and the board subject that it is under will be unknown.
ii. The teams’ representatives shall send the answer in the public chat.
iii. The first team who will be able to answer the question correctly will gain
the highest rank applicable.
iv. The round shall continue until all relevant ties are broken.
13. For the teams with power-up, they shall expressly say their intention to use the power-up
before the question is read. Once validated by an officer, the power-up shall be
automatically enforced in the next question.

Through this activity, the contestants will be subjected through a fictitious scenario that will
mimic the business environment that they will be encountering in real life. Their problem-
solving skills, along with collaboration and team communication skills, will all be tested
while being subjected to time-pressure.

01 General Qualifications

1. Each team shall be composed of THREE (3) students currently enrolled and taking BS
Accountancy and other Accounting-related programs (Accounting Technology,
Management Accounting, and the like) during the term or semester they join EXCEED.
2. All contestants should be in their third, senior, or penultimate year.
3. Each member of the team shall be enrolled in the same university.
4. There shall be no limit on the number of teams to be sent by each participating
university.
5. The same team can join the other competitions under the Accounting Challenge.
6. Failure to comply with the aforementioned eligibility rules will result in immediate
disqualification.

02 General Mechanics

1. Contestants are expected to be present at the Zoom Conference meeting at least 15


minutes prior to the scheduled start. The participants are also expected to have a stable
internet connection. Late teams shall be allowed to join the competition but no
adjustment to their standing shall be made.
2. Participants must use the zoom function “hide non-video participants” to prevent any
problem in missing out the main screen.

3. Participants must change their Zoom name to this format: GroupName_Surname (e.g.,
Hello_Dela Cruz).
4. Participants should observe proper decorum during the contest proper. Everyone except
the quizmasters’ mic should be on mute.
5. Any group caught cheating through accessing search engines, exchanging answers, or
contacting people outside of the group during the competition will be automatically
disqualified.
6. Each member of the group shall be given a copy of the materials needed for the event
(e.g. the PowerPoint that will contain all the materials, videos, etc). The link for such
shall be given the day before the event and will only be accessible on the event itself.
7. All the materials in the event are deemed confidential and thus, participants are strictly
prohibited to copy, photograph, or screenshot any of the questions or other materials
throughout the quiz bee proper. Participants who are found guilty of violating this
provision will also be disqualified.
8. Each team should strategize on how to disseminate the tasks while answering the
questions and solving the Virtual Breakout Room.
9. The person that will share screen should be the same person that would share screen
throughout the event. Please AVOID closing the PowerPoint presentation as this will
restart the game.
10. Should there be a need to change platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc), other
members are encouraged to perform the task as the member sharing cannot close the
PowerPoint presentation.
11. Should there be any questions or clarifications, participants can address them through
the facilitators per breakout team. This can be done through the use of Zoom’s raise
hand function.
12. All answers to the accounting questions must be messaged via Zoom chat to the
facilitator.
13. Stable internet connection is required for all participants and disconnection issues will
not be taken into consideration as means of adjustment in the time to be considered in
declaring the winners.

14. Failure to follow any of the aforementioned and to be discussed rules and regulations
shall merit a warning for the subject group. Two warnings shall automatically constitute
disqualification.
15. The EXCEED2021 Virtual Escape Room team leaders and assistant team leaders, along
with the board of judges, are in-charge of implementing these rules and regulations.

03 Game Mechanics

1. Each team will be directed into a breakout room for the game proper. A facilitator will
be assigned per breakout room that will be in charge to monitor the team throughout
the game.
2. A ‘go’ signal will be announced by the facilitator to officially start the game by
distributing the password to the PowerPoint presentation.
3. Each team is expected to operate the Powerpoint presentation sent to them prior to the
event day itself through the share screen.
4. Any member of the group may share their screens to ease the communication among
the group.
5. The virtual escape room is divided into three segments of which participants have to
answer both accounting and non-accounting problems to escape the room and win the
game.
6. Each team is expected to be detail-oriented to find clues that would help them proceed
to the next stage. Moreover, they can click images from the Powerpoint that would help
them go further. Videos are also required to be finished to continue the game as it can
also include information that can be useful to answer other puzzles.
7. Please be guided by the accounting topics per segment that can be seen in the
following table.

8. In answering the accounting problems in Segment 1, each team should answer at least
4 correct answers out of 5 questions to proceed to the next stage. For other segments,
all questions should be answered correctly to process to the next stage.
9. Usage of brute force to decode a certain clue is prohibited. The participants must
accurately solve the accounting and non-accounting questions to proceed to the next
step.
10. All answers to the accounting and non-accounting questions must be told or chatted to
the facilitator for checking.
11. Each team will be given an opportunity to ask for help from the facilitators for a
maximum of FIVE (5) times. The teams can avail of such by saying the phrase “We need
help!”. However, an additional time of 30 seconds will be added to their overall time for
each call for help. Questions should only be about the process of answering the
accounting question and clues regarding the puzzles. Questions that are answerable by
exact numbers are not allowed.

12. The time will only be paused if the group asks any arbiters for clarifications regarding
the answer to a specific accounting question.
13. Once a certain slide from the PowerPoint presentation is reached by the group, the
facilitator will immediately stop the timer and will calculate the total time of the team.
14. Each team is given a total of THREE (3) hours to escape from the virtual breakout room.

04 Criteria for Judging

The moderators of the Virtual Escape Room will be in-charge of taking notes of the
time each group enters stages or rooms throughout the game. The winners of the Virtual
Escape Room will be based on the following criteria:

1. The time spent by all participants will be considered and ranked from fastest to slowest.
The group with the fastest time to escape will be declared the winner.
2. In the case that no group was able to escape or that 0-2 groups were able to escape the
Virtual Escape Room, the group in the farthest stage or room will be declared the
winner.
3. If there are more than 1 group vying for a place, the fastest time they enter the stage or
room will be considered.
