LESSON 10: FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AND PERSONAL PLANS
II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
Analyze plays and songs as means of understanding unchanging values in a changing world;
Analyze dialogue as one of the elements in building the theme of a play;
Explain how the elements of a full-length play build its theme;
Express appreciation for sensory images used;
Explain how a full-length play may be influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors.

III. ANTICIPATORY GUIDE


How do drama pieces reflect life and human relationships?

Percival Wilde (1887-1953) was best known as a writer of one-act plays, but he also wrote several
mystery novels and short stories. He was born in New York and graduatedfrom Columbia in 1906. Wilde sold
his first story in 1912. After the success of his first short story in 1912 and the many requests he received for
the dramatic rights, he decided to become a playwright. He wrote numerous short stories and one-act plays
after that. A published report stated that more of his plays were being produced in American “Little Theatres”
than any other author.
Aside from being a writer, ne also served as secretary and director of American Dramatist. He was also a
member of the New York Theater Guild and was on the advisorv board of the Mystery Writers of America He
married Nadie Rogers Marckress and had two children with her. In 1920, he served in the Navy during
WWII.

IV. LESSON CONTENT


Listen to the lyrics of the song, “Home” by Michael Buble’ and answer the following questions:

1. What ideas came to mind as you were listening to the song?


2. What feelings were evoked as you were listening to the song?
3. What message do you think is the song trying to communicate to its listeners?
4. Helen's husband, John, is finally coming home after serving for three years in the war. Upon learning
of her husband's homecoming, Helen becomes rattled. Why is she so worried now that her husband is
back?

Reading Selection: “His Return” by Percival Wilde

Process Questions:
1. How would you describe John's initial reaction upon walking inside his home for the first time in
three years?
2. What clues were given to indicate that John came home from the war
3. Based on the maid's reaction to John's homecoming, how was John revered in his house and in his
community

5. How would you describe the relationship of John and Helen?
6. What are the similarities and differences of John's and Helen's treatment of their maid?
7. What was Helen's main concern upon learning that her husband is finally coming home?
8. Why is Syhvia insisting on meeting John personally?
9. Did John react the way Helen expected him to? Why did he react that way?
10. What is the overall theme of the story?
11. Do you find the title of the play fitting?
12. Does the play show human or family relationships? Why or why not?

V. ASSESMENT/EVALUATION
Compare and Contrast
Recall the song, "Home" by Michael Bublé. Analyze the themes presented in the song as well as in the play
"His Return." How are their themes similar/How are they different? Write your answers on the table that follows.
