Determining Prior Knowledge

Juan Hurd

National University
It is an assumption that teenagers should have some basic understanding of finances with

regards to everyday life. However, once students reach the twelfth grade and take the Economics

course, the subject matter may exceed their current level of understanding. With that said, as the

educator of this class I must assess every students current understanding of what is economics.

At the beginning of the new semester I will be able to determine their knowledge by

creating a worksheet that has several questions regarding the following, in which the students

must complete in class.

• What is economics

• Scarcity

• Economic Systems

• Money

• Productivity

• Labor

• Cost Benefit Analysis

• Economic Institutions

• Exchange and Trade

After the students have completed the worksheet, we will discuss the questions and their

answers as a group. Students will then be given a reading assignment that will provide basic

factual information and precise vocabulary regarding the topics being discussed. According to

our text, “specific facts are needed for adequate comprehension” (McKenna, M.C. & Robinson,

R.D (2014) Teaching Through Text, Reading and Writing in the Content Areas. Pearson pg 79.

This specific lesson plan will consist of reading, understanding of economic vocabulary,

researching of pertinent information and creation of specific graphs and charts. I will provide
examples of such material so that the students have a clear understanding of the aforementioned

assignments and expectations.

The accommodations that I would utilize to assist English Language Learners and Special

Education students will vary from “modifying lessons based on individual learning ability, group

students together by a shared topic or ability, and to assess those students needs on a daily basis

and to adjust the lesson specifics according to their needs” (20 Differentiated Instruction

Strategies and Examples).

In conclusion, our duty as responsible and ethical educators is to assess our students on a

daily basis. I must prepare myself to adjust any lesson plan to ensure that my students have

obtained the necessary content in order to proceed with the next lesson. Educators must provide

the correct attention in order for our students to succeed academically. Economics is a difficult

subject that the majority of students have never heard or discussed the content matter. My goal is

for the students to have the ability to fully understand and explain in depth what the basic

fundamental economics is really about.
