Variations of Farming:

1. Subsistence Farming – Bulacan, Philippines

The farmers are planting rice crops because it’s the main source of living of the
farmers and their family. Due to the development of urban areas, agricultural growth has
been specified. With the help of Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund, more than
30, 000 farmers in Bulacan are allocated and are assisted with machinery program.
2. Shifting Cultivation – Mindoro, Philippines

The Mangyan tribes are people that temporarily migrate, this means that shifting
cultivation matches their way of living. They use the short span of cultivation for them to
have resources. Also, the Mangyans have helped the forest land to thrive with their
practices in agriculture since they don’t use chemical pesticides in farming.

3. Slash and Burn agriculture – Sierra Madre, Philippines

Sierra Madre is known to be the longest mountain range in the Philippines and the
purpose of farmers for using the Slash and Burn agriculture is for the infrastructure
projects which is detrimental to the forest. According to DENR, that the forest must be
sustained since indigenous people are benefitting from the forestland.
4. Crop Rotation – Baguio, Philippines

The strawberry capital of the Philippines is using the crop rotation agriculture as it
can increase the production of strawberry since it helps the farmers reduce the soil-borne
diseases caused by fungi and bacteria to destroy the strawberry crops. Since strawberries
are highly demanded, the farmers use crop rotation to sustain the plantation of the crops.

5. Pastoral Nomadism – Isabela, Philippines

Farmers in Isabela are advancing since the carabaos are the ones helping them in
their farming activities, especially in harvesting crops. They believe that having carabaos
make their life as farmer whole. Farmers are also taking advantage of dairy farming they
can gain from the carabaos.
