Education

Professor - Ms. Jerelyn Orian

Definition of Standard

 In English
- something established by authority, custom, or general
consent as a model or example. (Merriam-Webster)

 In Education
- are the learning goals for what students should know and
be able to do at each grade level.
Importance of Standards
 To provide the basis for more intentional quality
teaching.
 To provide the basis for more relevant teacher
preparation.
 To provide the basis for the development of
more appropriate curricula and learning
materials (whether used in the home center)
 To accommodate children from diverse cultures,
socio-linguistic, and socio-economic
backgrounds, as well as those with special
needs.
Importance of Standards
 To provide meaningful and realistic markers for
what young children can know and do at
different levels of development.
 To provide the basis for developing a national
monitoring system.
 To provide basis for developing program
evaluations to determine effectiveness.
Importance of Standards
In order to ensure that the student is given clear and precise instructions, it
becomes necessary to align instruction with standards.
Standards ensure better accountability – holding teachers and schools responsible
for what goes on in the classrooms. The practice of aligning learning to standards also
helps ensure that a higher level of learning is attained, guides teachers in the process of
assessment and helps keep them on track.
Standards based instruction helps guide the planning, implementation, and
assessment of student learning. The use of standards to streamline instruction ensures that
teaching practices deliberately focus on agreed upon learning targets. Expectations for
student learning are mapped out with each prescribed standard.
Teachers follow standards based instruction to ensure that their students meet
the demands targeted. Following a standards-based model for classroom assessment and
instruction is an approach teachers use to track student performance and plan focused
instruction to meet the specific needs of students.
Different Types of Standards
 Early Learning Standards
 Parenting Standards
 Teacher Standards
 Social Indicators
 Access to Services
 System Effectiveness
Early Learning Standards
- It defines what children should know and be able
to do

Example:
Five-year old children will be able to talk
about their family, where they live, parents’ names
and many things about them.

Note: These are usually manifest in children’s

behavior or discourse.
Parenting Standards
- It defines what parents should know and do to
advance their young children’s health,
development, and education.

Example:
Parents should read or tell stories to their
children at least three times a week.

Note: These are usually manifest in parents’

behaviors or discourse.
Teacher Standards
- This defines what teachers should know and do
to advance their students’ learning.

Example:
All teachers should know how to assess
their students’ competence and report such
findings to parents.

Note: These are usually the basis for teacher

preparation programs.
Social Indicators
- It defines the nature of the social context in which
the child exists (family and community conditions)

Example:
The percentage of children who live in poverty.
The percentage of children who are born
malnourished.

Note: These are usually phrased in terms of risk-factors.

Access to Services
- It defines the nature and amount of children who
have access to diverse services

Example:
The percentage of children who have access to
high quality child development programs.
The percentage of children who have
developmental screenings upon entry to preschool
programs.

Note: These are usually defined for a geographic

catchment, area, city, town or neighborhood.
ADDITIONAL
Health - Children must be healthy and safe in order
to learn and grow. Programs must be healthy and
safe to support children’s healthy development.

Physical Environment - a safe and healthful

environment that provides appropriate and well-
maintained indoor and outdoor physical
environments.
How do Standards Work?
 Create the standards with clear definitions.
 Implement services/curriculum to meet
standards.
 Assess progress toward the standard.
 Revamp:
 The standards
 The curriculum
 And the Assessments
