College is a higher education institution that introduces one to a

career that one will be doing for a lifetime. College life changes

many freshmen who enter in a positive and negative way. College

life is tough if an individual does not put in the time and effort to

achieve greatness. Success is a bit of luck and hard work. The

workload is immense and will only accumulate as the years go on in

your college career. viii

different Course from their Strand. Senior high school serves as the

preparatory level for students before stepping into college. It is

consisted of various subjects according to their chosen strand that is

under different tracks. These programs develop students through

the method of using higher level of teaching, broader lessons and

actual application of learning in real life. Some of the subjects were

extracted from college-level courses and this serves as an

introductory phase for them in order to be prepared. Senior high

school is consisted with subjects and programs similar to college in

order to introduce it to students, and be familiar with its contents. In

order to make Senior High School effective, they ensure that the

programs being offered are inclined with the curriculum of the

Commission of Higher Education (CHED) which is the government

sector that manages the system college and university education in

the Philippines. A student, for instance, who finishes the

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) strand in the Senior

High School academic track, is now required to take additional

courses if the student chooses to enroll in a Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) major in college. These

additional courses which are now called "bridging programs" are

either taken during the first year of college or over several weeks in

the summer before college starts. The "bridging program" in the

Philippines is more like a set of remedial courses. In some cases,

these remedial courses are given only over a few weeks.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks

in-depth understanding of social phenomena within their natural

setting (Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage; 2014). Phenomenology is an

approach to qualitative research that focuses on the commonality of

a lived experience within a particular group. The fundamental goal

of the approach is to arrive at a description of the nature of the

particular phenomenon. Typically, interviews are conducted with a

group of individuals who have first-hand knowledge of an event,

situation or experience (Creswell, 2015).

CO-RESEARCHER

In this study, the researchers interviewed five (5) college

students that are from Accountancy, Business and Management

Strand. Five (5) were selected from Quezon City Polytechnic

University. The researchers also assured that the co-researchers are

willing to share their experiences and they agreed to be true on

what they shared.

TREATMENT OF THE DATA

In the qualitative data analysis, the researchers use processes

and procedures to analyze the data and provide explanation,

understanding, or interpretation. Qualitative data analysis typically

occurs simultaneously with the data collection (Coffey, A.,

Holbrook, B., & Atkinson, P., 2014). Also, the researchers

listened to the records several times, transcribed the stories, and

manually assessing the transcripts to attain with the appropriate and

relevant themes.

EIDETIC INSIGHTS

Based on the stories shared by the co-researchers, personal

experiences, and observation of the researchers the following

insights were drawn.

1. In the said interview the co-researchers shared their

different experience they have encountered, one of this is

their adaptability to their course that they are taking now.

These are the statements that express their experiences;

one of the co-researchers said that they can cope to their

course even if it is not related to their strand.

2.   Most co-researchers also Influenced by peers, and some

of them said that they are having a hard time taking their

course because they are not used to the subjects that they

are taking.

3. The co-researchers also became contented to their course

even if they are experiencing many struggles and they learn

how to love their course.

4.  Being an opportunity taker is also evident to the co-

researchers; the statements said that they are willing to

accept the opportunity when there are a chance to get the

course that related to their strand.

5. Most of the co-researchers are motivated not just by

theirselves but also by their family, friends and especially by

God. They believed in theirselves that they can overcome

and continue to stand with their chosen decision as they

continue to doing their plans and achieving their goals.

IMPLICATIONS

Based on the Eidetic Insights, the following implications were

drawn:

1. This research concluded the experiences of College Students

taking different course from Accountancy, Business and

Management Strand managed to decide between two

different choices: their beginning and foreseeing end or

outcome of their decisions that could bring them to their

desired path and journey.

2. Parents, friends and God are part of the motivated change of

the minds of the co-researcher through their encouragement.

These led them to choose and enter the new course that they

are taking.

3. Unavailability of slots for the desired course is also

experienced by the co-researchers that led them to the course

that they are unaware of the things within it, nevertheless, co- xv

researchers happened to take the challenges that their course

are giving.

4. These College Students from the Senior High School program

under Accountancy, Business and Management is indeed

adaptable and has a potential to survive the struggles that can

be faced as one enter the college life, especially when taking

a course.

5. Co-researchers did not limit their skills and knowledge with

what they gained from the previous years, yet, they start to

cope with the things that aren’t aligned to their

specializations.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the eidetic insights and drawn conclusions, the

researchers arrived at the following recommendations:

Senior High School students should have a reserved plan or

second option when considering what course to take. They must

also be willing to learn and come out of their comfort zones and try

to adapt the new environment and extract the affectivity of the

Senior High School program.

Senior High School teachers can help their students to

prepare them on entering the new phase of their lives, the college

life. Teachers can also share formulate modules and methods to

ensure the student’s learning ability and particular intelligence.

School Administrations should have knowledge regarding this

dilemma and come up with a help or guidance to students that are

having a hard time choosing the right course for them. Also, schools

Our Your
Mission
17

METRO MANILA COLLEGE xvii

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
should consider opening more reserved slots for the growing

number of students every year.

Parents, Guardians or relatives must support and guide their

child and give encouragement on choosing the right path that they

will soon start to take and help them be aware t what they will

enter.

Future Researchers must contribute to make this study be a

guide or basis of the study they will be doing soon. They can also

conduct alike study to compare the validity of the present study.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Choosing a course that suits oneself requires major decision-

making skill especially to Senior High School students within the

recent year. Strands are tailored-fit to the interest of students in

specific fields of study or disciplines. Course consists of everything

involving study towards the goal of learning the subject to take a

degree. It has been observed that students from Accountancy,

Business and Management strand are pursuing courses unrelated to

their strand. However, it has been ascertained to be practice of

one’s good decision-making analysis.

One way to attain a right course to take is to know what are the

needs ad wants of the student to further analyze one’s thoughts in

choosing the right course. In fact, Laura Warner, a teacher at

University of East London stated that desired course is one of the

most important parts of the university experience; it should be one

Mission

METRO MANILA COLLEGE 2

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
of main motivations for applying to, and accepting the offer of a

university. It should be interesting to an individual. It should

challenge one’s existing knowledge and advance potential

understanding. That teach new skills and hone those what already

have. It should teach one to think, whether that’s about a practical

skill or a philosophical concept. It should motivate and inspire an

individual – to work and want to work.

The present research presents the Lived Experiences of

Accountancy, Business and Management Senior High School

Graduates taking different course from their strand. Hence, this

research then helps students to prepare and ready their time and

focus to pursue studies that corresponds their capability. This

combination of two is a possible way to achieve success and

additional learning in any form it may be used.

and principles to which the present study is related. These materials

are usually printed and found in books encyclopedias, professional

Local.

According to Santos R. (2015) College admission counselors

need to be sure that the potential student has the ability to

academically successful while at college. The best indicators for

Our Your
Mission
29

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
success are the student's grade point average (GPA) and college

entrance exams. The higher the

grade point average and test score, the likelihood that

student has gained the necessary academic skills to transfer to 9

college level academics. It is true that different colleges require a

certain passing mark to be admitted in the school. Higher marks in

college entrance exams and in their GPAs means that the student is

capable of higher academic achievement. Students who didn’t meet

the passing marks are alluded to other colleges which they are

suited for.

According to Aquino A. (2014) since some colleges offer

courses which are not their top of the line, it is a must for the

students to choose schools that excel with what course they prefer.

It should be carefully examined. Nevertheless, if the student passed

in one of the best schools in the country but didn't qualify in the

course he really wants, second thoughts might arrive. It is up to the

student whether to choose that best school or proceed to the school

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
where he passed and met the qualifications for his real choice. Every

factor must be carefully weighed. It's all about grabbing the

opportunity and taking the risks in finding a place where one

student feels like he belongs.

10

According to Perez P. (2014) Deciding on which college to

attend which is not a gut reaction. It requires mature and serious

discussion and may not, in long run, lead to the initial choice.

Considered the cost facts, all parties involved in the discussion come

away from much fired decision feeling comfortable. If at the end of

the freshmen semester, the decision needs to be revisited,

undergraduates can always consider transferring.

According to Saysay K. (2015) Students need to show their

commitment to the cause on a larger scale. An example could be for

the student to set a money goal for the cause and create a walking

team as well as additional fundraisers to meet the goal. Volunteering

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
that solves a community problem is an attractive attribute in the

eyes of the admission committee. Students who are active in

volunteering in different activities for the development of the society

will gain knowledge in handling small and large-scale commitments

like setting higher goals in life, or goals that aims to help others to 11

progress as well. Colleges also aim to have these kinds of student to

further their knowledge in volunteerism as well as developing their

determination to achieve.

Philippine Basic Education (2018) with the new K to 12

curriculums in the Philippines, various tracks are now offered in the

last two years of basic education. The various options available

obviously make it possible for students to find themselves later

unprepared for the courses they decide to take in college. A student,

for instance, who finishes the accounting business management

(ABM) strand in the senior high school academic track, is now

required to take additional courses if the student chooses to enroll in

a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) major

in college. These additional courses which are now called "bridging

Foreign.

According to Jay Greene (2014) of the Manhattan Institute

defines college readiness as graduating with a regular diploma,

having completed a minimum set of course requirements (four years

of English, three years of math, and two years each of natural

science, social science, and a foreign language), and being able to

read at the basic level or above on the National Assessment of

Education Progress reading assessment. While, federal policy could

play an important role in communicating the need for all students to

prepare for college and providing the public information about what

that means. The federal government should invest in research and

development to support programs that align secondary and

postsecondary education and improve students’ preparation for

college; provide funding to improve academic preparation in

struggling high schools; and improve data collection and analysis

and require public reporting.

According to Splaver (2017) Personality plays an important

role in the choosing of the right course. A student's personality must

be self-motivated type, as to investigate courses possibilities from 13

early on in their lives, and not the procrastinating type that waits till

they are compelled to decide. Students must take seriously the role

grades play in limiting opportunities in the future. Splaver went on

to say "It is important for you to have a good understanding of

yourself, your personality, if you are to make intelligent upcoming

plans".

AHEAD Learning Systems, inc. (2015) the academic track

consists of courses that will make college life easier to adjust to in

terms of subject variety and, to a certain degree, difficulty. This

does not mean, however, that if you take the other tracks, you

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
cannot go to college. If a student chose the arts and design track,

for instance, nothing is stopping him from taking up Fine Arts or

Interior Design in college instead of working right away. It would

still depend on the student. The academic track is simply the track

that prepares students for the most common college courses such

as business management, engineering, and the sciences.

14

Upon choosing the academic track, students can choose from four

different strands: General Academic; Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics; Accountancy, Business, and

Management; and Humanities and Social Sciences. Students may

choose their strand in the same way that they decide a course in

college. Aside from the 15 core subjects, these strands will add 16

subjects composed of different contextualized and specialized

subjects based on the track and strand that will be spread out in

grades 11 and 12.

According to Waugh (2014) cited, high standard of living, is an

important part of culture and values. The education system has a

significant and direct impact on the quality of our workforce our

economic productivity and ultimately, our ability to prosper as

businesses, as people, and as a nation rely on our public schools to

provide highly skilled and educated talent. K to 12 is a solution to

create opportunities that will help all children from the time they

enter the classroom to when they join the workforce. 15

Local.

According to Luistro (2015) During the Aquino administration,

they have planned to require the students to pursue an

undergraduate course aligned with their strand. If students decided

to take up an undergraduate program not aligned with their strand,

they must at least take a bridging program to catch up with the

subjects they have not taken during their Senior High School. 16

A study from Roosevelt College, San Mateo (2016) found

out that the parents’ influence, personal choice, job opportunity and

peer influence can affect the student’s decision on their choice of

college course. The researchers concluded that the students look not

only at their personal choice, but also at the decision of their

parents, peers, and the availability of the job as their guide in

choosing their undergraduate program. Job opportunity is the said

highest weighted mean in the study and the researchers concluded

that this factor greatly affects the students ‘choice in choosing what

college course they will take up. The study has shown that the

Our Your
Mission
37

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
students tend to analyze if the course they will choose can improve

their skills and if it can put them in a highly paid profession.

According to Sarmiento, D. and Orale, R. (2016), The K-12

program is a more potent educational model compared to the old

curriculum of basic education in the Philippines. Students can

prepare themselves for a more rigorous training in the higher

education or go immediately to employment or be an entrepreneur.

Being new in the Philippines, it is marred with issues such as lacking 17

qualified teachers and the much-needed facilities for use in the

highly specialized courses, specifically at the SHS level. There were,

however, interventions made and are expected to be in placed very

soon.

According to Pascual (2014) presented that the availability of

work after finishing college is mainly considered by the high school

students and then followed by choosing the course as a personal

choice. The peer’s preference of course and consideration of family

business was considered the least factor that affects the decision in

choosing college course. Most of the student-respondents preferred

scientific courses which includes engineering and statistics courses.

According to Martin E. (2015) which have the same result as

to Pascual’s study that relies the decision-making of students in

work viability. However, it displays the exclusion of the majority's

personal ability in order to get the "in-demand" job of the

generation. The problem is that if a large number of graduates come 18

only on a few courses that has fulfilled the amount given for job

vacancies, there could be a problem for the remaining number of

unemployed fresh graduates of the same courses.

Foreign.

According to Adelman (2016) of the Institute for Higher

Education Policy analyzed high school students’ transcripts using

longitudinal data collected by the U.S. Department of Education and

documented that the intensity and quality of the high school

curriculum completed is the biggest predictor of postsecondary

success. Adelman found high school grade point average and

achievement test scores were also important. Moreover, the impact

of a high school curriculum of high academic intensity and quality on

degree completion is far more pronounced and positive than any

other pre-college indicator of academic resources. A number of

other studies have investigated the relationship between curriculum

and student outcomes and have found that college preparatory

curriculum is associated with higher achievement and greater equity 19

in course access. Second is the student’s skills, knowledge, and

habits of mind- David Conley, director of the Center for Educational

Policy Research at the University of Oregon College of Education,

has developed a set of standards gauged toward university-level

expectations regarding the knowledge and skills students need to be

successful in first-year coursework.

According to Planas A. (2016) cited that choosing a course in

college is a complex decision for students since it determines the

kind of profession that they intend to pursue in life. Students should

make career choice while in secondary school, so they will be able to

face problem of matching their career choices with their abilities and

school performance.

According to Edwards M. (2014), an executive director of

Opportunity Nation, "We've done a disservice in this country (USA)

by suggesting that there's only one path to success, which is to get

a bachelor's degree." He further adds that "there are many good 20

paying jobs available today that, quite candidly, a four-year Bachelor

of Arts degree does not prepare them for.”

A study by Education Policy Improvement Center (2015)

in the State of Texas, United States of America found out that

existing major standards, performance expectations, and

performance indicators are necessary for college success in subjects’

areas, including languages, mathematics, and social sciences. The

researchers concluded that students taking college courses aligned

to pre-college courses they took develop detailed key cognitive skills

and foundational skills that make them ready for college.

The Holmes Educational Post (2014) Vertical alignment is

best known as one of the successful techniques to use when it

comes to student’s performance, according to Center for

Comprehensive School Reform and Investment. It has its main

advantage to the students since it figures out the uniformed pattern

of the topics to be taught to the students. Thus, it diminishes the

repetition of the topics per course or year level and reduces the 21

reviewing of the subject matters anew. However, it takes a lot of

preparation to perfect this kind of standardized strategy because it

needs a collective effort from the school, the parents, and the

students.

METHODS OF RESEARCH

The purpose of this chapter is to present the methods and

procedures of research applied to gather the needed data. As well

as the research design, selection of co-researchers, instruments

used and the treatment of the data.

SELECTION OF CO-RESEARCHERS

Snowball sampling are used to select co-researchers. Snowball

sampling is a technique where existing study subjects recruit future

subjects from among their acquaintances. By observing the initial

subject, the researcher asks for assistance from the subject to help

identify people with a similar trait of interest. (Blakstad,2018)

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers exploit the following research instruments in

gathering data are:

Interview

The researchers operate an interview and made use of the

interview questions to collect and save information that have meant

in the study. An interview is a purposeful exchange of ideas, the

answering of questions and communication between two or more

persons (Scott, 2010). 24

Interview Protocol

A researcher’s interview protocol is an instrument of inquiry-

asking questions for specific information related to the aims of a

study as well as an instrument for conservation about a particular

topic (Patton, 2015).

Voice Recorder

Our Your
Mission
45

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
It is used to record the voice of the person who are talking or

telling some information. It is needed because it records every detail

that the co-researcher tells about the certain topic and the

advantage of this is because it records the voice of the person who

is speaking, we can go back or replay every word that they tell

during the interview.

25

Treatment of the Data

In the qualitative data analysis, the researchers use processes

and procedures to analyze the data and provide explanation,

understanding, or interpretation. Qualitative data analysis typically

occurs simultaneously with the data collection (Coffey, A.,

Holbrook, B., & Atkinson, P., 2014). Also, the researchers

listened to the records several times, transcribed the stories, and

manually assessing the transcripts to attain with the appropriate and

relevant themes.

CHAPTER 4

Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

This chapter includes the presentation, analysis, and

interpretation of data gathered by the researchers from the

interview conducted.

pagkuha ng kurso na hindi kaugnay sa ABM Strand is that the “life

naman na iyong learning nila dito, unang una diyan is iyong

(I am now taking Bachelor of Science in I. E. Actually, this is not

the course that I wanted, I am just encouraged by my friend. There

are struggles in taking this course that you have if you don't start to

love, it will not be done successfully. Some of my struggles with my

teachers that they are strict unlike in Junior High School and Senior

High School, they have no consideration, they become stricter for

college students. For the subjects, calculus really gave us a hard

time because we don't have any background regarding that,

Calculus is for the STEM Strand, for ABM we only know accounting,

it is far from math and far from calculus. I don't have any problem

to my classmates, as long as you're friendly, you'll get their style.

Those are the struggles and problems that really do not survive. The

only thing to do is face and fight. How? You just do not have a

simple impact because if you do not feel like you're weak. No

problem or struggles with people who have dreams and persist.

Always remember GOD IS BIGGER THAN THIRD CIRCUMSTANCES.

Believe in Him and trust in yourself that you can. Of course my

family is the ones who push me to continue this course. They are

the reason they are constantly fighting and persisting. The support

that comes from them even though they are not aligned with the

course I'm going to become the foundation to continue what

started. I have a hard time practicing Time Management, because

you will have different class schedule, there’s a morning, afternoon

and evening class. There are also good experiences are when you

are motivating yourself you will have a good result for that task and

good experiences are innate, some were from classmates, also from

teachers, in school there are also programs. I did not say that you

should only study, there should be sports also. My friends me

change my decisions because they are the ones who encouraged me

and liked this course. It's just too bad because all my learnings

before will be wasted, but there's a subject that I have taken before

that we are taking now, the Statistics and Probability. If I were

given a chance to take the course that is related to ABM, I will

accept it because I have a background already and we are already

for it. One of the lessons I've learned from taking different course

that is unrelated from ABM is that the life still goes on and that

being a student is much better if it is more challenging. I am

contented to my course now because the learnings are ok and your

knowledge is increasing not just for student life but in real life and in

different aspects of being an engineer because being an engineer

felt so nice even if they say that IE is the least in the Engineering

field but this is the best to study because you will learn many things

here I advise that. Continue to pursue what your heart wants and

what is on your mind and what course you really want because it’s

hard if you regret at the end but as long as you really want what 32

you're doing and the course you are going to take then be it.)

STEM tapos ABM kami kaya talagang malaking adjustment yung

ginagawa namin.

ABM yung subjects, more on journals tayo pero dito more on

adapt itong feld namin.

(Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering is the course that I

the major subject of engineering since it is aligned to the stem

strand but we are ABM that is why we made a big adjustment To

subject in ABM we focus on Fundamental of accountancy business

management of formulas to memorize that why we made a huge

adjustment to adapt in this field and for the teachers they are the

same but much more strict were in Industrial engineering we adjust

before on classes because most of my classmates are from STEM

we do not have any idea on what they are doing. I experienced to

fail in my present course because we do not know anything and

there is a big adjustment that we made because we need to

memorize many formulas. My parents are the first to made me

change my decision because since there’s no acct. have already, I

will find another school but since I am already here, I’ve passed the

test I will just pass my requirements that’s why I grabbed the I.E

course I regret those learnings that I gain from ABM because I’ve

learned many thing I have exerted so much effort from grade 11

and 12 to learn accounting and they will be just put into waste if I

will be given a chance to take the course that is related to ABM I will

accept it because I have knowledge already and with small

adjustment I’ll pass. One of the lessons that I have learned from my

experienced is that after your grade 10 in junior Highschool, you’ve

already decided for what strand that you want in grade 11 because

it should be aligned that is why as you take the college life

everything’s ok. I am contented to the course I have right now

(Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering is my current course.

Industrial Engineering is not my first choice because my first choice

is Civil Engineering and then there is no Civil Engineering here at

QCPU (Quezon City Polytechnic University) and then I just say

whatever Engineering just Engineering is ok because there is higher

demand when you finished Engineering. The struggles, firstly, we

have no background in the calculus because unlike STEM they are

focused on it because STEM is their strand and to ABM you don’t

have Basic Calculus and pre-calculus, that's really the foundation of

Engineering, calculus, because more on infrastructures are doing at

plant. We overcome our struggles in a way oreading about the

subjects example is dif and integral calculus. I do advance reading

then I'm communicating with my professor in calculus in a way of

asking questions on parts that I do not understand. In Teachers,

they're strict when it comes to grades because unlike to Senior High

School spoon-feed now what the lecture is just explaining, you're

Mission

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
going to teach yourself then when there’s a problem you are the one

who approaches your professor not him. Teachers are good at

teaching, so when your course is engineering your professor is

Engineer, so they teach their experience. In Classmate we are tied

to our strand because QCPU (Quezon City Polytechnic University)

has not opened a bridging program for ABM Strand or Techvoc who

have entered the Engineering course. So, we're mixed up and then

when it comes to class unity there's no problem because we're

working together. Previously, the subjects are easy because we are

ABM, we focused on the ABM teaching unlike in Industrial

Engineering, although at first, we don’t know anything in first

semester the first lesson is Deferential Calculus, ABM has no

background in that subject but they teach everything. They start

with basics because we are mixed in class but STEM just stand out

because they have a background there but when it comes to the

second sem, Integral Calculus, everyone seems to be standing out

of ABM because they deepen the subject of Integral Calculus

because it has a background in deferential calculus. Some of my

Our Your
Mission

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
experiences here are just okay because I'm no longer in a hurry

because I have a background in the Engineering course, Integral

Calculus and Deferential Calculus when you've learned that you will

not have to suffer because it’s like you learn in High school that they

will teach you to the start and you'll get it at the end whenever

there are subjects that we've take like Statistics but it’s even more

broad-based now because the previous Statistics is basic just like

over and over again, It teach already in Senior High School and

Junior High School unlike statistics now that you're using the

formula of Integral Calculus and Deferential Calculus. I didn’t change

my decision because my first choice is to became an Industrial

Engineer even though I was from ABM Strand and then second, I

wanted to be Engineer for my fallback, but Civil Engineering here is

unavailable so I take Industrial Engineering. First, I do not regret

because I've checked my core subject of Industrial Engineering and

then I saw there that we had a subject Financial Accounting subject

as Managerial Accounting when it came in the second year and then

I said that's my advantage to me because I did not like STEM that

Mission

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
they did not have Accounting subject so I do not regret to miss one.

If I'm given the chance to get courses related to ABM Strand, 50:50.

First, I will accept that if the Industrial Engineering does not accept

without STEM then another 50%, I will accept him if I do not have

the choice of course then I will be able to handle it sooner then I

will not accept it. If you choose the course you should be practical

as to what your more in demand job you should take, as it is for me

if you take a course that is not in demand as you only being hard to

yourself, please be aware that you will not be able to work in the

course you choose. Some of the lessons I have learned from

choosing a course that is unrelated to ABM is that you must be sure

of the courses you choose, should be from the beginning of Junior

High school you know which track path you will choose for when

you arrive college you will not have to choose the course. I am

satisfied with my course now because I'm no longer in my way, it

seems normal for me to have your subjects, although subject

sometimes have difficulty, just little as a minor can easily subject are

subjects not like today. I can only advise the ABM to choose the

puro nasa Engineering field kaya kapag naguusap-usap sila

kasama sila.

may pattern and nakaorganize na sya.

Dito kasi yung

matataas yung Ego, gusto lahat masusunod kung kayat wala

kayong matatapos at magagawa.Si Lord po then Family ko yung

nagpupush sakin para ituloy itong kurso na’to. Si Lord po kasi hindi

nya po ako hinahayaan bumagsak. Always pong answered prayer

kahit minsan diko pinagdadasal binibigay nya sakin. Parang andun

kita pababayaan. Family kasi naniniwala silang kaya ko and

Our Your
Mission
75

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION

job careers niya kasi is iyong Marketing at Accountancy kaya hindi

I'm going to be an entrepreneur, so I took I.E (Industrial

Engineering). Some of my struggles are at first, it's difficult but

because you enjoy the flow of learning it is not a hassle anymore. At

the moment, I don't feel my course yet but the difficulties are there

because it serves as a struggle which is math. For me, if you only

have the problem solving it because the problem is that you just

read and have the formula. So you will not have to suffer because of

the pattern and organize it. Then what about people? Here's what

you need big adjustment because it's a habit of the people you're

going through so that you can be wise in choosing your friend they

need to understand you. Here's why the Ego is great, everyone

wants to be able to do so so you do not have to end it and do it. At

my Lord then my family will have to continue to pursue this course.

Lord, because I did not let him fall. Always answered prayer

eventhough I’m not praying for this. It seems like this is the point

that I plan to do so you will continue to ignore me. Family because

they believe me and show that they are proud of me. Then my

siblings have dropped me forward. It's also the point of pressured

but because I know there are those who really love and I will not

leave so I fight to fulfill that dream.Teachers are just ok, just like in

my previous school, but in college you will not experience the easy-

easy feeling because the grades that you got it really does not

change anything unlike in high school, they are giving a plus point

Our Your
Mission
78

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
but in college nothing is like that. Subjects are ok because I have

already studied it in elementary as well as in high school, it’s just I'm

just a little bit surprised in Calculus even though I have a little

learning because my friends are in the Engineering field so when

they are talking with each other and I can converse with them. With

my classmates it's ok because I am enjoying with them. My dad and

my aunt are the one who change my decisions because just like

what I said before I should be in ABM I would take it, but when I

told my dad that I'll take engineering instead, he was happy so I

continued taking it. I don't have any regrets for what I have learned

in ABM Strand because it is like STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics) but the difference is accounting is the

major subject but in STEM, Calculus. There are also subjects in

Engineering that was part of ABM like business-matters so that in

that subject I will not have a struggle anymore because I already

have a background. If I was given the chance to get the course

associated with ABM Strand I would not even take it because I am

already here it means that this is the plan of the Lord, and based on

Our Your
Mission
79

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
my research on IE (Industrial Engineering), there is also an

Accountancy subject and its job opportunities or your job careers

are Marketing and Accountancy so you will not even have difficulty

expressing the things you learned in ABM and in Engineering. One of

the lessons that I have learned in my course that did not fit my

strand was that you should have many strategies and how you

should resist the things you did not expect and how you would enjoy

your world where you are not still aware of everything. Right now,

I'm not satisfied I'm not too frustrated with my course right now

because I can cope with my subjects. My only advice to the ones 58

who are choosing their courses, as everyone else said, you should

take what is in your heart but sometimes you need to pray for your

course that you are going to get because it's hard to resist what

Lord wants, so if Lord wants that course, you should continue taking

that because he doesn't give You a plan that does not fit into his.)

RESEARCHER’S REFLECTION

The following themes emerged from the reflections made by the

researchers on the Lived Experiences of College Students Taking

Different Course from Accountancy, Business and Management

Strand.

1. College Students are Adaptable

Our Your
Mission
81

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
According to Cambridge Dictionary, Adaptable is

able or willing to change in order to suit different conditions.

These students are adaptable because they are able to cope with

their course.

Co-researcher B – “Ms. Positive” said that “ Sa mga

subjects, sa ABM kasi Fundamentals of ABM yung subjects, more

on journals tayo pero dito more on computation, ang daming

(To subject in ABM we focus on Fundamental of Accountancy,

Business and Management, more on journals but now they are

more of formulas to memorize that why we made a huge

adjustment to adapt in this field.)

Co-researcher C – “Ms. Passionate” said that “Mahirap ang

(My experience is very difficult in my current course because we

have a failed subject because of the difficulty in calculus because

we did not take it during ABM, but here there are letters in

formulas but we can do it.)

Co-researcher D - “Mr. Persevering” said that “…sa course

(…in my course now because I'm no longer in my way, it seems

normal for me to have your subjects, although subject sometimes

2. College Students are Influenced by Peers

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
Cambridge Dictionary defined the peer influence as strong

influence of a group, on members of that group to behave as

everyone else does.

Co-researcher A – “Mr. Confident” said that “…hindi

(Of course, my family is the reason why am I still fighting and

pursuing, the support that they are giving even if I took a

course that is unaligned to my strand, and that will serve as

the foundation for me to continue what I have started.)

Co-Rresearcher B - "Ms. Postivite" said that

RESEARCHER’S EXPERIENCE

There are exciting memories that the researchers have during

their study. The most challenging part of the research is how to

convince our co-researcher to spare time to us to conduct an

Our Your
Mission
91

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
interview of College students in different Universities and to make

possible endeavor of this research.

Our topic should be related to our strand, there are many college

students that took different course from Accountancy, Business and

Management strand. We brainstorm and think what are the

experiences and struggles of the college students that are taking

different course from their strand in Senior High School. The two

researchers were the ones who interviewed the 5 college students in

different universities and the other researchers transcribed the data

that was gathered and they help each other to have a better data. 70

At first, the researchers decided to conduct an interview. In

February 28, 2019 the researcher contacts their co-reseacher for

them to know if they are available because they have a class.

Second in Quezon City Polytechnic University, (March 9, 2019) Most

of the co-researchers are from Quezon City Polytechnic University

because someone referred to the researchers that his classmates

are from Accountancy, Business and Management strand but taking

different course which is Industrial Engineering. There are many

Our Your
Mission
92

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
problems that happened to them. One of those are when they have

started doing interviews. The three researchers are not available

because of financial problem. So that the 2 researchers decided to

continue their interview even if the three researchers are not

available. They first arrived to the Lyceum of the Philippines

University because one of the researchers has a church mate that

will be a co-researcher on that school. They tried to find a co-

researcher in Metro Manila College but unfortunately, they didn’t get

a co-resarcher even one. They decided to go to Quezon City

Polytechnic University because someone told them that many

students are possible to be their co-researcher, they found 5 co-

reseacher in that University. For those researchers that experiences

different challenges during the interview, don’t mind it, just do what

you need to do and also it strengthens our faith to overcome those 71

challenges in interviewing and help others to conduct information in

our research study and at least we have a little insight of what

happens when you take different course from your strand.

SYMBOLISM

The co-researchers were symbolized by jigsaw puzzle. Just like a

brand new jigsaw puzzle, they are into a good form like how the co-

researchers were first taking their desired strand, and that is

Accountancy, Business and Management. As the new hase of their

lives, they encountered several happenings and eneded up into a

course that is unaligned to their strand just like an unsolved jigsaw

puzzle. The co-researchers are adaptable just like the puzzle pieces

that suit their fit into different parts of the puzzle to make a good

image just like how the researchers try to find them because they

are fitted to the purpose of this study. Just like how the puzzle

continues to be played, those pieces can be handled by their peers

that influenced them to still continue to pursue their course despite

new learnings and environment. The co-researchers are contented

to their chosen course because they are motivated by their friend,

family and also God that help them to have a courage taking

opportunities and that is to have a better image just like how a

jigsaw puzzle when it is done and solve that depicts the good image

of its original picture.

and recommendation offered by the researchers.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to describe and explore the Lived Experiences of

College Students taking different course from Accountancy, Business

and Management strand.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. What are the Lived Experiences of College Students taking

different courses from Accountancy, Business and

Management strand?

2. What insights can be drawn from these lived experiences?

3. What are the implications of these insights?

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION
Based on the stories shared by the co-researchers, personal

experiences, and observation of the researchers the following

insights were drawn.

1. In the said interview the co-researchers shared their different

experience they have encountered, one of this is their

adaptability to their course that they are taking now. These

are the statements that express their experiences; one of the

co-researchers said that they can cope to their course even if

it is not related to their strand.

2. Most co-researchers also Influenced by peers, and some of

them said that they are having a hard time taking their course

because they are not used to the subjects that they are

taking.

75

3. The co-researchers also became contented to their course

even if they are experiencing many struggles and they learn

how to love their course.

4. Being an opportunity taker is also evident to the co-

researchers, the statements said that they are willing to

accept the opportunity when there are a chance to get the

course that related to their strand.

5. Most of the co-researchers are motivated not just by

theirselves but also by their family, friends and especially by

God. They believed in theirselves that they can overcome and

continue to stand with their chosen decision as they continue

to doing their plans and achieving their goals.

INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION

These led them to choose and enter the new course that they

are taking.

3. Unavailability of slots for the desired course is also

experienced by the co-researchers that led them to the course

that they are unaware of the things within it, nevertheless, co- 77

researchers happened to take the challenges that their course

are giving.

Also, schools

should consider opening more reserved slots for the growing

number of students every year.
